A Yamaha MT-09 não precisava de ser reinventada para a próxima época - já estava extremamente bem feita há quase quatro anos. Em vez disso, os japoneses concentram-se na afinação e na adição de truques práticos e contemporâneos, como o controlo de tração e as mudanças automáticas. A curva de binário plana é responsável pela propulsão suave e potente. A partir das 4000 rotações, a Duke empurra com força e atinge as 8500 rotações. Mesmo a baixas rotações, o motor não gagueja nem engole, o que é uma vantagem na cidade. A maior força da Duke, para além da sua capacidade de condução, é a sua manobrabilidade, razão pela qual se pode dizer que é um brinquedo.
