Kawasaki KLE 650 2027: Rally looks with cruise control

21 inches up front, long-distance comfort in focus

Big front wheel, long suspension travel and yet the next holiday stage firmly in sight: Kawasaki's new adventure range gets reinforcements with 70 hp. Even the base model comes with cruise control. The SE steps things up with its shifting, wheels and features.

With the KLE 500, Kawasaki expanded its adventure range with a rally-inspired model. For 2027, the KLE 650 joins it as a bigger sister. The direction is clear: Kawasaki wants to combine the 21-inch front wheel and long suspension travel with a particular focus on long-distance comfort. The commute, a twisty road and an unpaved turn-off are all part of the intended use. The basis is a further developed 649 cc twin and a chassis derived from the KLE 500.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Familiar twin, new throttle control

At the heart of it is the liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin with eight valves and 649 cc. For the European version, Kawasaki quotes 51.6 kW or 70 hp. New to this evolution are electronic throttle valves. Together with revised intake and exhaust systems, they are designed to deliver smooth throttle response and strong pull in the low and mid rev range. The setup particularly targets the range below 4,000 rpm, while above roughly 6,000 rpm the engine is still expected to be revvy. A torque figure has not yet been given in the documentation.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – Engine

The further developed 649 cc twin uses electronic throttle valves.

The technical changes go into detail: a slim airbox with two intake ducts is also meant to reduce intake noise when touring. The throttle bodies measure 38 mm, and according to Kawasaki, fine-atomising injectors deliver droplets of 75 microns. Revised intake ports, valve timing and valve overlap are intended to support the desired balance between pull and power. The compression ratio is 10.6:1 compared with 10.8:1 on the 2026 model-year Z650 S cited in the source. 630 mm long exhaust headers and the tuned overall length of the system round off the package. The upswept silencer leaves room for side cases mounted symmetrically and close to the bike.

The compact design comes partly from a triangular arrangement of the crankshaft and gearbox shafts, a cassette-style gearbox and coated aluminium cylinders without separate liners. A balancer shaft takes care of the vibrations of the 180-degree crankshaft. Wet-sump lubrication, an automatic fast idle on cold starts and coolant routing through the engine cases complete the design. A cover behind the radiator is meant to direct warm air sideways away from the rider. The assist and slipper clutch is designed to reduce lever effort and help prevent the rear wheel from hopping or sliding during rapid downshifts.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Long suspension travel, focus on tarmac

According to Kawasaki, the high-tensile steel trellis frame weighs 16.9 kg and uses the engine as a stressed member. A mount bolted to the engine carries the swingarm pivot. The new steel box-section swingarm is said to save 500 grams compared with the KLE 500's, while offering greater vertical rigidity. The wheelbase remains 1,555 mm and the rake 28 degrees. Trail is 106 mm instead of 104 mm on the smaller sister. Together with the suspension setup, this is primarily meant to bring stability and comfort on paved roads. The handlebar mounts are rubber-mounted to damp vibration, and the lower aluminium triple clamp features weight-saving machined recesses.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – Chassis without fairing

The trellis frame uses the engine as a stressed member.

Up front there is a 43 mm KYB cartridge-type upside-down fork with 210 mm of travel, at the rear a Uni-Trak system with 196 mm of travel and steplessly adjustable spring preload. Compared with the KLE 500, the fork spring rate rises from 9 to 10 N/mm, while at the rear it drops from 90 to 75 N/mm. Kawasaki justifies this combination with better ground contact and greater comfort on tarmac. Guards integrated into the front mudguard protect the fork tubes from stone chips. These are the design prerequisites; a verdict on responsiveness and reserves will have to wait for a ride.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Spoked wheels and switchable ABS

According to Kawasaki, the wheel combination of 21 inches front and 17 inches rear continues the line of the original 1991 KLE 500. Aluminium rims and steel spokes are fitted to the standard version, which runs tubed tyres. The SE also gets spoked wheels, but for tubeless tyres. Both versions roll on Trailmax Mixtour tyres developed together with Dunlop. Low tread blocks and large contact patches underline the road-oriented setup. The SE's advantage on tour: a puncture of this kind can be fixed without removing and replacing an inner tube.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – Front wheel and brake

Up front, two discs each measuring 300 mm in diameter do the stopping.

Up front, Kawasaki fits two 300 mm discs with two-piston calipers, at the rear a 230 mm disc, also with two pistons. The piston diameters are 27 mm each, the effective disc diameters 272 and 203 mm respectively. A stiff front master cylinder is designed to reduce unnecessary free play. The ABS can be deactivated via a switch on the right handlebar. After switching the bike off and on again, it is active front and rear once more. Kawasaki points out that local regulations may require ABS to be switched on when riding on public roads.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Seat and wind protection to suit

The 16-litre tank suits the touring focus, and its slim shape is also meant to provide freedom of movement off-road. The wide, forward-set handlebar and slightly more forward footpegs create an upright riding position. Smooth side panels and flat engine, clutch and sprocket covers are designed to stay out of the way when shifting body weight. The pegs have rubber inserts that can be removed without tools, revealing serrated surfaces underneath. On the base model the handlebar is steel, on the SE it is aluminium from D.I.D.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – Standard seat

As standard, rider and pillion seats sit at different heights.

The standard seat height is 870 mm. An optional rider seat lowers it by 30 mm. Rider and pillion seats are stepped as standard, with a higher pillion position and hollow-structure padding designed for long-distance comfort. Combine the standard rider seat with the optional low ERGO-FIT pillion seat and you get a continuous, flat surface for more freedom of movement or luggage. In total, the two accessory seats allow four combinations. The screen can be set in three positions: base height, 27 mm higher or 55 mm higher. Transparent side fairing elements are designed to provide additional wind protection without significantly restricting the view of the terrain.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Cruise control even on the base model

On the electronics side, even the standard model comes with KTRC traction control and cruise control. KTRC has two modes: the first intervenes less and is intended for sportier riding, while the second is designed to step in earlier on slippery surfaces. You operate the cruise control on the left handlebar and adjust speed using plus and minus buttons. Braking, pulling the clutch, shifting or closing the throttle past the zero position deactivates it, as does a major traction control intervention. This control is made possible by the electronic throttle system.

Kawasaki KLE 650 2027 – LCD cockpit

The standard model has a new 5-inch LCD.

The base model gets a new 5-inch LCD with a bright display. It shows, among other things, speed, revs, gear, fuel level, range, current and average fuel consumption, coolant temperature and maintenance. Two trip meters, a clock, an economical riding indicator as well as notifications and connectivity information round off the package. Via RIDEOLOGY THE APP MOTORCYCLE, vehicle data, maintenance information and ride logs with GPS route are accessible on your smartphone. Call and message alerts are also among the functions.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE: More than just a different display

The SE steps up the cockpit with a 5-inch colour TFT display. Two layouts are available, one of them with larger rally-style navigation prompts. Brightness and a light or dark background can be adjusted automatically or manually. Additional readouts include battery voltage, average speed, riding time, shift indicator and status information for the assistance systems. On the SE, general display settings can also be changed via the app. Turn-by-turn navigation on the display and voice control require a corresponding licence, and availability varies by country or market.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – TFT cockpit

The 5-inch colour TFT display is reserved for the SE.

Also standard on the SE is the Kawasaki Quick Shifter for clutchless up- and downshifts, from 2,000 rpm according to the manufacturer. On the base model it is available as an accessory. Then there are the tubeless spoked wheels, a windscreen that is 106 mm taller, the D.I.D aluminium handlebar, a USB-C port integrated into the cockpit, metal-reinforced handguards and a larger aluminium bash plate. The standard version instead has a plastic guard with a raised front section to protect the oil filter. The SE therefore differs from the base model in several areas relevant to touring.

Kawasaki KLE 650: Rally looks and touring luggage

Visually, Kawasaki combines a tall, compact front end with larger painted fairing surfaces than on the KLE 500. The three-part LED headlight has two upper units for low beam and a lower one for high beam. LED indicators, a slim LED tail light, the low-slung front mudguard and the KX-inspired tail complete the look. The high-mounted, angled cockpit is designed to be readable when standing too. Above it sits a multi-purpose bar. Broad side panels and the angle-cut silencer end cap also pick up the rally theme.

Kawasaki KLE 650 SE 2027 – Accessory side cases

The subframe allows two side cases and a top case at the same time.

The subframe is designed for mounting two side cases and a top case at the same time. Genuine accessories include matching cases with mounts, a top case carrier with pillion grab handles, a luggage rack, tall screen, handguards, heated grips, USB-C, LED fog lights, large bash plate, engine crash bars, seat options, centre stand, radiator guard, GPS mount and accessory relay. Kawasaki has also announced a Rally Edition and an Adventure Tourer Edition based on genuine accessories. The documentation provided does not break down which individual parts these packages include.
