Kdor je mislil, da bo novi model 8980 SMT igral nepotrebno podporno vlogo med modeloma 890 Adventure in 890 Duke, se je verjetno zmotil. Redko kdaj je motornemu kolesu s svojim videzom uspelo narediti toliko, kolikor nakazuje na zunaj. Zato 890 SMT želi, da ga premikamo na športen način - in to zna storiti še posebej dobro. Vendar je z oklepom, dobro oblazinjenim sedlom in pokončnim položajem sedenja enostavno obvladati tudi daljše razdalje. Zavore imajo čvrst oprijem, upravljanje pa je izjemno agilno, tudi v tesnih ovinkih. Moto modela 890 SMT je očitno potovanje IN dirkanje!
