In the big 2024 adventure bike road comparison, a total of ten new adventure bikes competed against each other, including the BMW R 1300 GS and the F 900 GS. In the Lower Austrian foothills around the Pfaffensattel, the route offered ideal conditions to push the potential of the bikes on road tours to the limit. Everything was represented, from undulating road sections to grippy tarmac for sporty riders. Seven testers had the opportunity over three days to thoroughly put the bikes through their paces under realistic conditions. In this report, the testers describe their impressions of the BMW R 1300 GS and Moto Guzzi Stelvio.

Technical Comparison of the BMW R 1300 GS & Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024

But first, a quick overview of the key data of the two bikes compared. The R 1300 GS features a twin-cylinder boxer engine with 145 hp at 7750 rpm. It weighs 258 kg and has a seat height of 850 mm. Its chassis is fully electronically adjustable. It also has an electrically adjustable windshield. It is equipped with lean-angle-dependent traction control, cornering ABS, the semi-active DSA chassis, radar cruise control and an optional quickshifter.

The Stelvio is equipped with a V2 engine producing 115 hp at 8700 rpm. It weighs 255 kg and has a seat height of 830 mm. Both the USD fork and the monoshock are adjustable in preload and rebound. The Stelvio also features lean-angle-dependent traction control, cornering ABS and radar-based rider assistance systems. In addition there is an electrically adjustable windshield and a quickshifter with blipper.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio - Engine & Performance Compared

The engines of the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio embody two different approaches to character and power delivery. The boxer engine of the BMW R 1300 GS proves to be a logical evolution of its predecessor, with impressive pulling power across the entire rev range. Testers praise the linear power delivery, the fine throttle response, and the reduction of disruptive effects such as the previous side-to-side rocking. Despite its enormous power, the engine doesn't feel aggressive, staying controllable at all times and giving riders of different experience levels a sense of confidence and safety. It is perceived as nearly flawless, with a broad torque band and impressive punch in every riding situation. However, the refinement of the running culture is not seen as an improvement by everyone. Fans of the classic boxer miss the typical character of the engine.

Moto Guzzi Stelvio

The longitudinally mounted V2 of the Moto Guzzi Stelvio, even in this most modern form, is a genuine character engine and thus stands in contrast to the smoothest boxer of all time in the R 1300 GS. Depending on taste, the decision between the two bikes can sometimes already be made upon first starting the mighty twins. The BMW, however, offers significantly more performance.

In comparison, the V2 engine of the Moto Guzzi Stelvio presents itself as a modern unit with clear roots in traditional Guzzi DNA. The water-cooled design marks a technical advance, yet the engine retains typical traits such as pronounced vibrations and the characteristic sound. Testers describe it as flexible and versatile, even though it requires higher revs for maximum output. Its strengths lie less in relentless pulling power than in the blend of tradition and modernity, which gives it a unique character. Despite a less dominant presence in the lower rev range, it delights with its charm and the authentic riding experience that Guzzi enthusiasts appreciate.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Gearbox Compared

The gearboxes of the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio show clear differences in operation and performance, each appealing to different target groups. The gearbox of the R 1300 GS is described by testers as solid, but not flawless. While it shifts silky smooth overall and reflects BMW's usual high quality, there are criticisms such as the difficulty of finding neutral precisely, and occasional inconsistencies when using the quickshifter. Especially in situations where the throttle isn't fully open or fully closed, slight jerks occur that somewhat tarnish the otherwise high-quality overall impression. Nevertheless, shifting performance overall remains at a high level and largely meets expectations in this vehicle class.

In contrast, the gearbox of the Moto Guzzi Stelvio leaves a rather mixed impression. It lacks the smoothness and precision that modern riders often prefer. Test reports highlight that gears often have to be engaged with force, and shifting up from first to second gear in particular is problematic. The lack of a quickshifter is seen as a drawback by some riders, as it makes operation more difficult especially at higher speeds. While some testers view this as part of the Guzzi character, others find it outdated and not befitting the machine's premium claim. In summary, the Stelvio's gearbox proves less refined, but only marginally tarnishes the overall impression given its qualities.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Chassis Compared

The chassis of the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio each set different accents, reflecting the philosophy of their manufacturers. The R 1300 GS impresses with its semi-active Dynamic ESA chassis, which automatically adapts to load conditions thanks to auto-leveling. This function ensures balanced riding performance and increases comfort. While the chassis never becomes completely stiff even in the sportiest settings, it still enables impressive agility and stability, even when ridden sportily on twisty roads. The Telelever, which offers less direct feedback than a classic fork, takes some getting used to for some riders, but provides excellent stability under braking. Overall, the GS's chassis is one of the bike's strengths and offers an outstanding interplay of comfort and dynamics.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio, on the other hand, relies on a more traditional chassis concept that is sportily firm and proves particularly effective on the road. Testers praise the stability in long sweeping corners and the comfort on longer rides, which positions it well as a touring companion. On uneven roads, however, a weak point shows up: the chassis doesn't always work finely enough, especially over small bumps. Compared to other adventure bikes in the same price bracket, the Stelvio can't quite keep up here. Overall, the Stelvio's chassis offers a balanced foundation, but doesn't reach the technical level of the BMW R 1300 GS.

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024

The Stelvio's chassis and riding performance are at a good level, but can't match the technical sophistication and agility of the GS.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Riding Performance Compared

The riding performance of the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio shows just how differently two adventure bikes can be conceived, with both models playing to their strengths. The BMW R 1300 GS surprises with impressive agility despite its mass. Thanks to its low center of gravity and sophisticated geometry, the big bike can be tipped into lean playfully and guided precisely through corners. Even less experienced riders or physically smaller people quickly feel at ease, since the handling is intuitive and light. The overall package of balanced riding performance and the ability to make optimal use of the engine's power makes the riding experience unique and underlines why the GS is one of the most popular machines in its class.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio, on the other hand, impresses with sporty, precise riding performance that makes it feel more like a sporty tourer than a classic adventure bike. The Stelvio tips easily into corners and pulls harmoniously through the radius, making it a pleasure especially in long-radius bends. In fast direction changes, however, it requires a bit more effort at the wide handlebar, due to its higher center of gravity. Nevertheless, it remains agile in handling and gives pleasure to riders who value a dynamic riding experience. Both bikes score well on handling, though the BMW R 1300 GS shows somewhat greater ease and nimbleness.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Touring Suitability Compared

The BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio are both predestined for extended tours. The BMW R 1300 GS is considered the benchmark in its class and impresses with a pleasantly upright seating position and an electrically adjustable windshield that offers optimal protection from weather and wind. Comfort features like the distance-regulating cruise control make long-distance rides a pleasure. Testers praise the excellent ergonomics, which prevent any fatigue even on long rides, as well as the versatility: the GS is not only comfortable, but despite its size and comfort-oriented design can also be ridden sportily at any time. Whether on the highway or on twisty back roads - the R 1300 GS offers the perfect package for touring riders who don't want to make compromises.

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024

An electronically adjustable windshield offers the advantage that wind protection can be adjusted very quickly and easily. Especially on tours with constantly alternating built-up areas and fast stretches, this is a big plus.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio is also aimed at touring riders and scores with a pleasant, upright seating position and a comfortable seat that provides comfort even after hours of riding. The electrically adjustable windshield offers effective wind protection and can be individually adjusted on the move, significantly increasing comfort on long stretches, though it doesn't quite reach the GS's level. While the ergonomics suit most riders well, there were minor criticisms, such as the suboptimal positioning of the knees against the tank for taller riders. Overall, the Stelvio offers a solid foundation for touring, but remains slightly overshadowed by the BMW in terms of long-distance comfort and versatility.

BMW R 1300 GS versus Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Brakes Compared

The braking systems of the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio show different concepts, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The BMW R 1300 GS uses a Combined Braking System, where applying the rear brake automatically also activates the front brake and vice versa. Some testers find this system takes getting used to, especially when switching over from other bikes. It can lead to surprises in tight corners when the additional front brake force affects riding behavior. The radar-based emergency braking assistant is also viewed critically, as it occasionally detects obstacles that don't exist, such as rock walls in corners. Despite these criticisms, the fundamental braking performance is praised: the brakes are powerful and keep the bike safely in check even when ridden sportily. Features like hill start assist, on the other hand, don't win everyone over, as they can unnecessarily complicate pulling away.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio impresses with classic Brembo brakes that offer precise modulation and ample braking power. Combined with cornering ABS, the system provides a high degree of safety and control, without any unwanted interventions being criticized. Testers praise the confidence the brakes give, especially in demanding situations, and see this as a strength of the Stelvio. Overall, the Guzzi brakes offer more intuitive and direct feedback than the BMW's electronically assisted system, but remain less complex in terms of technological innovation. While the BMW scores with a broad range of assistance systems, the Stelvio impresses with simple but reliable braking performance.

Testers' Verdict on the BMW R 1300 GS vs. Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 Comparison

In conclusion, the BMW R 1300 GS and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio reflect two different philosophies in the adventure bike segment, each appealing to specific target groups. The BMW R 1300 GS remains true to its tradition as a versatile jack-of-all-trades, but thanks to the latest updates offers a more active and sportier riding experience. Testers praise the combination of comfort, sophisticated electronics, a strong engine and playful handling that impresses even on a bike of this size. At the same time, with its latest generation the GS moved closer to the competition and lost some of its unique character in the process. It appeals to riders looking for a bike that convinces uncompromisingly in every discipline - from sporty riding to touring capability to state-of-the-art electronics.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio stands out through its distinctive V2 engine and its unmistakable character. It is aimed primarily at touring riders who appreciate the typical Guzzi style and are willing to accept smaller weaknesses, such as the less intuitive gearbox or the chassis that isn't quite as fine-tuned over fast bumps. With modern electronic features and stable riding performance on the road, however, it offers a solid foundation for long journeys. Guzzi fans in particular will appreciate the Stelvio for its brand-typical looks and its incomparable riding experience. It scores as a charming alternative in the adventure bike segment, going its own way and appealing to riders who value character and individuality.

Both bikes stand for touring fun at a high level, with the BMW shining through its versatility and technical perfection, while the Moto Guzzi Stelvio captivates through authenticity and independence.

One-Size Flip-Up Helmet HJC RPHA 91 Carbon Tested

For this test, the whole crew relied on the new HJC RPHA 91 Carbon. This proves to be a high-quality flip-up helmet that scores especially with its low weight compared to the regular RPHA 91. Particularly noteworthy is the large field of view, which provides excellent all-around vision - a real advantage both in city traffic and on longer tours. The ventilation systems work flawlessly, and the washable, antibacterial inner lining noticeably contributes to wearing comfort, especially in warmer temperatures. The helmet naturally meets the ECE 22.06 standard and thus offers a current safety standard, while homologation as both a jet and full-face helmet promises flexibility and versatility.

Hepco & Becker EPIC 6 Tank Bag Tested

On the BMW R 1300 GS, alongside the Xceed case system, we also used the Hepco & Becker EPIC 6 tank bag. It securely and accessibly held our most essential small items (water bottle, wallet, documents, GoPro, etc.). The Hepco & Becker EPIC 6 tank bag impresses with its shape stability, ensured by high-density EVA foams. The tank bag not only offers lockable zippers and a sturdy carrying handle, but also water-repellent outer material that protects it in bad weather. For riding in heavy rain, a rain cover is also included that can be pulled over the tank bag. Inside, a mesh pocket in the lid provides additional storage space, while reflective details on the outside increase visibility in traffic. The waterproof inner lining and the practical loops for attaching optional accessories like map or smartphone pouches round off the well-thought-out design. The pre-mounted threaded plate allows for easy installation without drilling and fits on basic tank rings as well as Sport and Mini racks.

BMW R 1300 GS 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

1000PS.at

BMW developed the new R 1300 GS with a great deal of experience and know-how, which shows in its advanced technology and versatility. The model appeals to both experienced and new riders and offers an impressive combination of performance, comfort and state-of-the-art equipment. It is a successful blend of compactness, power and luxury that performs both off-road and on the road. Unfortunately, the first production run of the new 1300 GS is not yet 100% mature in some respects, as several recall campaigns and susceptible components show.

Powerful engine with very sporty responsiveness

Very good traction

Very stable riding performance - yet the bike still comes across as agile and eager for corners

Hand guards offer good wind protection

In minimal trim, the bike looks more compact and sporty than before

well-integrated radar cruise control

understandable operating concept

clearly legible display

diverse options for ergonomic adjustment

Great-working, unobtrusively integrated emergency call system

Very good balance under different load conditions

Not every desired configuration is possible - unnecessary extras sometimes have to be selected along with it

Chassis works at a good level - but a truly flawless responsiveness is not offered, nor is a really wide adjustment range

Front Collision Warning (FCW) triggers annoying false alarms in rough everyday use

For tall riders, the bike looks a bit too compact for an adventure bike, especially from behind

ABS system gives too much feedback into the brake lever during sporty riding

Side fairings are prone to scratches in rough terrain and when using coarse boots

Handguards with integrated turn signals not suitable for off-road use

Mirrors with integrated blind spot warning and exposed wiring unsuitable for off-road use

Seat comfort for rider and pillion only mediocre on long stretches - seat is too soft!

On long two-up rides, the direct responsiveness of the powerful engine is somewhat tiring

Despite the GS's elevated price level, the quality of some components, such as the plastic gear lever, leaves something to be desired

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

1000PS.at

With the new Stelvio, Moto Guzzi now also has a (shaft-driven) adventure bike or adventure tourer in its portfolio that - packed with state-of-the-art electronics - feels at home on the road, but is also ready for unpaved tracks. It's noticeably not made for rougher off-road terrain, as neither its ergonomics nor its chassis and other components are designed for that. In return, with its characterful V2 engine, which not only immediately catches the eye visually but also convinces with its performance, it offers a unique charm and a unique selling point in the broadly positioned adventure bike segment.

characterful, present engine

extensive electronics

Good ergonomics for tarmac

Wind protection

radar-controlled safety features (PFF model)

high weight

Heated grips not standard

quickshifter also costs extra

Chassis and ground clearance not suited for medium to challenging off-road terrain
