Honda X-ADV 2021 vs. Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023

In terms of engine and drive train, the Honda X-ADV 2021 is equipped with an in-line, 2-cylinder engine with a displacement of 745ccm. It has a power output of 59 HP and a torque of 69 Nm. The fuel system is injection-based and it has an electric starter. The transmission is a dual-clutch system with a chain drive. On the other hand, the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023 also has an in-line, 2-cylinder engine but with a larger displacement of 1084ccm. It has a higher power output of 102 HP and a torque of 105 Nm. The fuel system and starter are the same as the X-ADV. However, the transmission is a gearshift system with a chain drive.

In terms of suspension, both models have upside-down telescopic forks at the front and a swing arm suspension at the rear. However, there are differences in the specifications. The X-ADV has a front fork diameter of 41mm and a travel of 154mm, while the Africa Twin has a front fork diameter of 45mm and a travel of 230mm. The rear suspension travel is also higher in the Africa Twin with 220mm compared to 150mm in the X-ADV.

In terms of chassis, both models have a steel frame. However, the X-ADV has a twin tube, tubular frame type, while the Africa Twin has a double cradle frame type. The rake and trail measurements are also different, with the X-ADV having a rake of 63 degrees and a trail of 104mm, and the Africa Twin having a rake of 62.5 degrees and a trail of 113mm.

In terms of brakes, both models have double disc brakes at the front and a disc brake at the rear. The X-ADV has a front disc diameter of 296mm, while the Africa Twin has a front disc diameter of 310mm.

In terms of advanced rider assistance systems, both models are equipped with ABS, riding modes, and traction control. However, the Africa Twin has additional features such as cornering ABS, ride by wire, cruise control, and anti-wheelie.

In terms of dimensions and weights, the X-ADV has a front tire width of 120mm and a diameter of 17 inches, while the Africa Twin has a front tire width of 90mm and a diameter of 21 inches. The rear tire width is 160mm for the X-ADV and 150mm for the Africa Twin, both with a diameter of 15 inches and 18 inches respectively. The wheelbase is slightly longer in the X-ADV with 1590mm compared to 1574mm in the Africa Twin. The seat height is also higher in the Africa Twin with 850mm compared to 820mm in the X-ADV. The kerb weight is slightly lower in the Africa Twin with 226kg compared to 236kg in the X-ADV. The fuel tank capacity is higher in the Africa Twin with 18.8 liters compared to 13.2 liters in the X-ADV. The range and combined fuel consumption are also higher in the Africa Twin with 383km and 4.9l/100km respectively, compared to 366km and 3.6l/100km in the X-ADV.

In terms of equipment, both models are equipped with LED headlights and a TFT display. However, the Africa Twin has additional features such as Bluetooth connectivity and a touch-screen color display.

In terms of strengths, the X-ADV has a sufficient engine power, good brakes, a comfortable seating position, a DCT dual clutch with G-mode, traction control, an adjustable windshield, LED lights, a cool appearance, a smart key, and a 12V power socket. On the other hand, the Africa Twin has a powerful engine, sophisticated electronic driving aids, a wonderfully functioning DCT (optional), a touch-screen color display, good ergonomics, and long-distance capability. The windshield of the Africa Twin is also considered good for off-road use.

In terms of weaknesses, the X-ADV has a high price, a storage compartment that is only sufficient for a full-face helmet, somewhat narrow running boards, a chain drive that requires high maintenance for a scooter/adventure operation, and an extroverted appearance that may not appeal to everyone. The Africa Twin has weaknesses such as an operating concept of the electronics that is not very clear and intuitive, handguards that are not very robust for off-road use, a windshield that offers manageable protection, and ergonomics that are not ideal for standing riding.
