A antecessora já era capaz de ser conduzida de forma desportiva, bem como convincente em passeios, a nova R 1200 R pode fazer ainda mais - graças ao sistema de pannier (claro que a um custo extra), viajar ainda não é problema, mas domina o desporto ainda melhor. Graças ao motor boxer de dois cilindros, agora parcialmente arrefecido a água, é maravilhosamente ágil - 125 cv podem não parecer muito no papel, mas o motor empurra incrivelmente e comporta-se de uma forma cultivada. O chassis e os travões também têm uma pontuação elevada e a posição de assento é desportiva e direita, cobrindo um amplo espetro desde a diversão maravilhosa até às viagens de longa distância. Infelizmente, a BMW também entende perfeitamente o truque com a lista de sobretaxas. O modelo básico está bem equipado com ABS que pode ser desativado, controlo de tração que também pode ser desativado e dois modos de condução, mas muitos truques interessantes são quase obrigatórios - e, claro, fazem subir muito o preço.
