Overview - Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020 vs KTM 890 Adventure R 2022

The Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020 and the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 are both excellent enduro motorcycles with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

Starting with the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020, it boasts a high-torque engine that delivers 102 HP and 105 Nm of torque. This provides ample power for off-road adventures. The bike also comes equipped with sophisticated electronic driving aids, including ABS, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride by wire, traction control, and anti-wheelie. These advanced rider assistance systems enhance safety and control while riding. Another standout feature of the Africa Twin is its optional DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), which functions wonderfully and provides smooth gear shifts. The bike also features a touch-screen color display, offering easy access to various settings and information. The ergonomics of the Africa Twin are well-designed, making it comfortable for long-distance rides. Additionally, the bike's windshield is perfect for off-roading, offering protection from debris and wind.

On the other hand, the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 excels in off-road capabilities. It features an off-road capable chassis and harmonious ergonomics, especially for tall riders. The bike's agile handling allows for easy maneuverability in various terrains. The engine of the 890 Adventure R is powerful, delivering 105 HP and 100 Nm of torque. The bike also comes with a comprehensive electronics package, including ABS, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride by wire, and traction control. The cornering ABS, in particular, includes an off-road mode, which enhances safety during off-road riding. The brakes of the 890 Adventure R are finely controllable, providing precise stopping power. Another notable feature is the traction control, which adjusts depending on the lean angle, further improving stability and control.

However, both motorcycles have their weaknesses. The Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020 has a flood of buttons on the left handlebar, which can be confusing and not very user-friendly. The handguards of the Africa Twin are also not very robust for off-road use, potentially compromising protection. Additionally, the windshield of the Africa Twin offers only manageable protection from wind and debris.

The wind and weather protection provided by the bike's design is also moderate, which may affect comfort during adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, useful features such as Quickshifter+ come at an extra cost, which may be a drawback for some riders.

In summary, both the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020 and the KTM 890 Adventure R 2022 offer impressive features and performance for enduro riding. The Africa Twin excels in its high-torque engine, sophisticated electronic driving aids, and comfortable ergonomics, while the 890 Adventure R stands out with its off-road capabilities, powerful engine, and comprehensive electronics package. However, the Africa Twin has weaknesses in terms of handlebar controls and handguard durability, while the 890 Adventure R has drawbacks in seat comfort, seat height, wind protection, and additional costs for certain features. Pros and Cons in comparison

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2020

For me, the Africa Twin is a touring enduro as a touring enduro should be. This was already true of the predecessor model and did not change with the increase in displacement and power. Because the latter remained manageable at 102 hp, and Honda even managed to shed a few kilos compared to the CRF1000L. So it remained versatile, functioning just as well on the motorway as off-road. The chassis absorbs almost all bumps, the engine remains sovereign in every situation, ergonomics and seating comfort are exemplary. A motorbike for all days as well as for the big trip - wherever that may be.

KTM 890 Adventure R 2022

If you can't get to a place on the 890 Adventure R, you probably can't get there at all on a touring enduro. It is the right choice when things get really rough. Long suspension travel and a high seat underline the serious visual appearance, the 890 Adventure R is no dazzler off-road. All the more surprising, then, that it also cuts a very good figure on the road.
