If you like a cool scrambler look but need to stay in the A2-compatible range when it comes to the engine, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a really smart choice. The 400cc engine has a nice torque in the mid-range; it doesn't really wind out a gear. The riding position is upright, the suspension is comfortable yet stable. The Scrambler 400 X can therefore also be ridden in a sporty manner, although the front brakes require too much manual force when ridden with vigour. On the other hand, the features are generous with the many off-road orientated attachments and put the higher price into perspective compared to the naked Speed 400 sister.

The eye-catching graphics from Suzuki Austria suit this bike well. For me, however, the joy of life doesn’t come from the graphics, but from the ride itself. The DR-Z4SM succeeds in combining a familiar, solid feel with genuine playfulness. On the one hand, it offers a predictable riding experience; on the other, it has enough supermoto character to ensure the fun doesn’t stop straight away, even as your experience grows. Those looking primarily for maximum power will continue to look towards more powerful machines. I’d take this Suzuki for a test ride because of its seamless interplay of features: precise handling, smooth gear changes and an engine that remains easy to read whether you’re opening or closing the throttle. My brief test doesn’t provide a long-term assessment, but it does offer a clear personal verdict. I felt comfortable in the saddle and would have liked to have carried on riding.
