Overview - Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE 2023 vs Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023

The Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE 2023 and the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023 are both powerful and capable enduro motorcycles. They have similar engine types, with the V-Strom having a V engine and the Africa Twin having an in-line engine. The V-Strom has a larger bore and stroke, resulting in higher engine power and torque compared to the Africa Twin. With 107 HP and 100 Nm of torque, the V-Strom offers impressive performance on and off the road. The Africa Twin, on the other hand, has 102 HP and 105 Nm of torque, making it slightly less powerful but still capable.

In terms of suspension, both motorcycles feature upside-down telescopic forks at the front and swing arm suspension at the rear. The V-Strom uses Kayaba suspension components, while the Africa Twin uses Showa components. The Africa Twin has a greater suspension travel, with 230 mm at the front and 220 mm at the rear, compared to the V-Strom's 170 mm and 169 mm respectively. This gives the Africa Twin an advantage in off-road situations, allowing it to handle rough terrain with ease.

Both motorcycles have advanced rider assistance systems, including ABS, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride by wire, cruise control, and traction control. The V-Strom also offers hill start assist and a shift assistant with blipper, which enhances the riding experience. The Africa Twin, on the other hand, has additional features such as anti-wheelie control and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to connect their devices and access various functions.

In terms of dimensions and weights, the V-Strom has a slightly longer wheelbase and higher seat height compared to the Africa Twin. It also has a larger fuel tank capacity, offering a longer range. However, the V-Strom is heavier, weighing 252 kg compared to the Africa Twin's 226 kg. This could affect maneuverability and handling, especially in off-road situations.

Both motorcycles come equipped with LED headlights and TFT displays, providing clear visibility and easy access to information. The V-Strom also offers a retro look, which adds to its appeal. The Africa Twin has the option of a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), which provides seamless gear shifting and enhances the riding experience.

In terms of weaknesses, the V-Strom's high weight could be a disadvantage, especially in off-road situations where maneuverability is crucial. The suspension travel on the V-Strom could also be greater to improve its off-road capabilities. The Africa Twin's operating concept of the electronics may not be as clear and intuitive as the V-Strom, and its handguards may not be as robust for off-road use. The windshield on the Africa Twin offers manageable protection, and the ergonomics may not be ideal for standing riding.

Overall, both the Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE 2023 and the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023 are powerful and capable enduro motorcycles. The V-Strom excels in terms of its powerful engine, high-quality electronics package, and long-distance comfort. The Africa Twin stands out with its sophisticated electronic driving aids, DCT option, and good ergonomics. Ultimately, the choice between the two will depend on the rider's preferences and intended use.

Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE 2023

Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE 2023

With the revision and expansion of the 1050 models, Suzuki now has the right big V-Strom for everyone. Those who know from the outset that they will stay almost exclusively on the road will find the standard model a reliable travel companion or even a buddy for all days; those who want to limit themselves less in their choice of routes and also want to ride regularly on unpaved terrain will now find the DE a good choice. The main argument, however, remains this engine, which with its 107 hp and above all its rich torque leaves hardly anything to be desired.

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023

Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin 2023

For me, the Africa Twin is a touring enduro as a touring enduro should be. This was already true of the predecessor model and did not change with the increase in displacement and power. Because the latter remained manageable at 102 hp, and Honda even managed to shed a few kilos compared to the CRF1000L. So it remained versatile, functioning just as well on the motorway as off-road. The chassis absorbs almost all bumps, the engine remains sovereign in every situation, ergonomics and seating comfort are exemplary. A motorbike for all days as well as for the big trip - wherever that may be.
