Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid 2026 Tough Test

1,000 Balkan Kilometres Between Touring and Off-Road

More electronics, more comfort and still genuine Ténéré DNA? Over around 1,000 kilometres through Slovenia, Bosnia and Montenegro, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid 2026 shows how well it really combines long distance and off-road.

From Short Test to the Big Balkan Trial

At the first presentation of the new Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid, there was only time for brief impressions. On the Ténéré Spirit Travel Trophy 2026, that turns into an intensive test: five riding days and more than 1,500 kilometres in total from Slovenia through Croatia and Bosnia to Montenegro, roughly half of it off the tarmac. The journey through wild southeastern Europe raises one question: is the heavily modernised Tenere World Raid now a long-distance tourer, a capable off-road machine or something in between? For a direct comparison, my own, still completely analogue Ténéré 700 from 2020 comes along. For colleague Schaaf, who not only handles the camera but also takes turns with me at the handlebars, we organised the new World Raid. Let the adventure begin!

Ténéré Travel Trophy with Luggage Service and Gravel

The Ténéré Spirit Travel Trophy is not a press event but an adventure tour for all Tenere riders. Owners of all sorts of Ténéré model years ride together through the Balkans and choose each day between pure road, easier off-road and more demanding off-road sections. A warm-up day with optional rider training, live music, accommodation, prepared tracks and luggage transport are all part of the package. That means small Westwind Moto Ranger Wild side bags with tools, snacks and day luggage are enough for us. The test bike itself isn't entirely stock either. A bash plate, massive crash bars, handguards and Michelin Anakee Wild 50/50 tyres prepare it for the rubble fields of the Balkans. This kit doesn't turn the tour into a lab test, but it matches pretty much exactly what many owners would fit before a serious trip.

The CP2 Engine of the Tenere 700 World Raid Pulls You Out of the Rubble!

The familiar CP2 remains the heart of the World Raid. The liquid-cooled twin still delivers 73.4 hp at 9,000 rpm and 68 Nm at 6,500 rpm from 689 cc. Off-road, what matters isn't the peak figure but torque and controllability. When the bike gets knocked off line, speed drops more than planned and the speedo reads just 15 km/h in third gear, all you have to do is stay on the throttle. The engine doesn't protest; it pulls you out of the rubble field with plenty of grunt, like a tractor. From around 4,500 rpm the engine noticeably picks up and puts enough life into the rear wheel to play with traction in the gravel twisties. Add to that a pleasant, not too loud, yet gruffly booming sound that pops from the stock silencer. Exactly this mix of low-rev lifeline and revvy fun explains why so many Ténérés show up on the TET, ACT and similar adventure events.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid - Suspension and Chassis Ready for Rough Terrain!

Yamaha hits the nail on the head with the suspension. Up front is a fully adjustable 46 mm KYB fork with 230 mm of travel, at the rear a likewise fully adjustable KYB shock with 220 mm of travel and a convenient handwheel for preload. Add 240 mm of ground clearance, a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel. According to the manufacturer, the World Raid weighs 220 kg wet and carries 23 litres of fuel in two aluminium tanks. That's a hefty chunk when you're hustling it over rough terrain. Nevertheless, the suspension works at a high, plush level, soaks up bumps and stays predictable. Even at speed through deep gravel, across loose rubble fields and over sharp-edged rocks, the Yamaha never feels overwhelmed. The scales only tell part of the story when chassis and damping do their job this cleanly.

The World Raid's 21-inch front wheel, KYB fork and finely modulated brake work in harmony.

Ergonomics Between a Wide Tank and Freedom of Movement

The wide twin tank shapes the ergonomics more than on the standard Ténéré. The new one-piece seat extends far forward and creates a comfortable pocket when seated. At 1.85 metres, though, my knees gradually start touching the tank where it widens significantly. Even taller riders will have to slide back a bit. Interestingly, this small drawback disappears completely when standing. The knee area stays narrow enough to push the outside knee forward, rotate hips and upper body into the corner and actively steer the Yamaha via the footpegs. The wide stock pegs help here. Its 890 mm seat height demands respect from short legs, and a certain Ténéré front-heaviness remains noticeable despite the lighter aluminium tanks that reach far down. Still, off-road I never seriously wish I had my slimmer standard Ténéré back.

Standing up, the World Raid offers enough freedom of movement to actively steer it with knees, hips and footpegs.

Ride-by-Wire Brings Safety and the Old Throttle Snatch

Ride-by-wire arrived in the Tenere with Euro 5+, and with the World Raid come riding modes and lean-sensitive assistance systems. The traction control is welcome on slippery ground when your head needs a break. The Explore riding mode, however, is far too tame for me. Even in Sport mode, power delivery is far from aggressive and can be finely metered at the apex. At the same time, the electronic throttle feels slightly less direct than the cable throttle on my old Ténéré. Even more annoying is that the familiar throttle snatch at low speed hasn't gone away. In first or second gear, even the most modern version of the Tenere still jerks when the load comes on. It's no drama, but it can get irritating in a tight hairpin. The optional quickshifter works decently but shows slight roughness between second and third gear. It's good, but not the best I've ever ridden.

On tarmac, the World Raid's power delivery can be finely metered even in Sport mode, yet stays deliberately docile.

Bosnian Rubble as a Durability Test for the Ténéré

Of course we stay on tracks, but some of them are used by locals in a Golf 2 as their everyday connection. With enough momentum we blast through deep gravel while firmly embedded, partly sharp-edged rocks hammer the wheels and bash plate. It feels like murdering the hardware. The World Raid shrugs it off and confirms the Ténéré's reputation as a bulletproof adventure bike. In loose off-road terrain it still demands some commitment. If you get timid and instinctively shift your weight too far back, you'll feel the front wheel push. Stand decisively over the front, and the heavy Yamaha can be steered with surprising agility via the pegs. The brakes fit the picture too. On the road the lever needs more force, but off-road the front and rear brakes are beautifully easy to modulate. Only the small pad of the rear brake pedal is something I don't always hit cleanly in the heat of battle.

Deep gravel sections and sharp-edged rubble put the hardware and suspension to the test and demand a decisive stance over the front.

Modern Electronics, but Not Bold Enough

My biggest criticism is not that Yamaha has modernised the World Raid, but that the change of direction is too timid for my taste. Purists still have the slimmer standard Ténéré. The World Raid could therefore commit more fully to its step towards touring and technology. Its assistance systems are lean-sensitive, but the rider's choices for traction control remain limited. Some cheaper adventure bikes offer more levels. In Austria the Yamaha costs 14,499 euros, in Germany 13,699 euros. In this price bracket, more configurability and small comfort details wouldn't be an outrageous wish. The electronics work, don't intrude and don't dilute the character. That's exactly why the feeling remains that Yamaha could have added another shovelful without turning the Ténéré into a computer on wheels.

The TFT bundles riding modes and off-road settings, but Yamaha remains reserved when it comes to assistance system levels.

Big Range, Only Mediocre Wind Protection

The twin tank is the World Raid's great strength. On our tour, the on-board computer shows around 4.7 to 4.8 l/100 km depending on the stage. Even at 5 l/100 km, the 23-litre tank capacity makes enormous distances possible. The manufacturer's figure is 4.3 l/100 km. Anyone who can ride that far, however, expects decent wind protection. This is exactly where the Yamaha drops points. At my height, the airflow hits the helmet awkwardly and creates loud turbulence from around 70 to 80 km/h. We're riding with Cardo Venture off-road helmets, developed together with Leatt with the communication system already integrated. Their strong ventilation makes them rather loud by nature, but the turbulent airflow makes the problem considerably worse. A small adjustable windscreen would hardly have hurt the rally look and would better suit the long-distance ambitions.

The two aluminium tanks, which reach far down, hold 23 litres combined and enable enormous touring distances.

Cruise Control, Seat and Tarmac Comfort on the Road

The standard cruise control works well and takes the strain off on the link stages. Why the World Raid is the only member of the Ténéré family to get it is less clear to me. The new switchgear is already on the standard Ténéré; it simply lacks the corresponding button. On long days, the World Raid cuts a good figure. We sometimes sit and stand on the bike for around ten hours without major pain or complaints. The stock seat has a pleasant density and doesn't bottom out. Sliding back, the knee angle is even more relaxed than on my old standard bike with the tall rally seat. On tarmac the Yamaha turns in harmoniously. With its 21-inch front wheel it's no nervous corner-carver, but with the 50/50 tyres it clearly communicates how much grip is available. So it remains a real joy on twisty to relaxed stages, even if adventure bikes with a stronger tarmac focus offer more wind protection and luxury.

The standard cruise control eases long link stages and is operated via the left switchgear.

World Raid Verdict After Five Days in the Balkans

So is the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid 2026 a tourer or an off-road machine? It strikes the balance surprisingly well. The bigger tank and extra weight bother you far less off-road than the spec sheet suggests. Unless you're attacking the toughest terrain like Pol Tarrés or Kevin Gallas, you get a confident, robust adventure bike with strong suspension, huge range, cruise control, steering damper and centre stand. In return you accept the high seating position, slight front-heaviness, mediocre wind protection and a bit of the old CP2 throttle snatch. After five hard days, our World Raid shows no defects. It could have been bolder on electronics and long-distance comfort, but at its core it remains exactly what it should be: a Ténéré that can travel very far and doesn't have to turn around at the end of the road.

Yamaha Tenere 700 World Raid 2026 - Experiences and Expert Review

Gregor

If you want, you can tackle demanding off-road terrain with it too. However, if you don't need to cover long distances, you'll still prefer the lightness of the standard T7, because the World Raid's wide tank makes itself felt in ergonomics and handling. The high-quality suspension, on the other hand, copes well even with hard off-road sections, and thanks to the steering damper the bike stays very stable even on dirt tracks taken at speed. A 6-axis IMU and ride-by-wire also allow the Ténéré long-distance flagship to integrate cornering ABS, drift control and lean-sensitive traction control. The quickshifter costs extra, though. All in all, true to its name, the World Raid appeals especially to globetrotters and in this respect is very well thought out with its long range and plenty of off-road comfort, but still not quite as comfortable as other adventure bikes with a stronger tarmac focus.
