Anyone travelling by motorcycle can't carry separate tools or technical equipment for every conceivable situation. At the same time, a flat starter battery or a tyre pressure problem in particular can bring a trip to a halt. That's why the BS Power Box AIR PB-02, available from Touratech, bundles four functions into one housing. The device can be used as a jump-starter, compressor, power bank and flashlight. With dimensions of 187 × 118 × 47 millimetres and a weight of 865 grams, the Power Box is designed to be carried in a pannier, bag or backpack.

One of the central functions of the Power Box AIR PB-02 is jump-start assistance for vehicles with a 12-volt lead-acid starter battery. For this, the device provides a starting current of 600 amps. Peak current is 1,200 amps. The Power Box is designed for various types of 12-volt lead-acid batteries. These include SLA, GEL, AGM, MF, dry-cell and Ca/Ca batteries. The Power Box AIR PB-02 is not suitable for lithium starter batteries such as LiFePO4. This point should be particularly noted for motorcycles fitted with a lithium battery, whether factory-installed or retrofitted.

The performance figures of the jump-start function are not exclusively aimed at motorcycles. The Power Box AIR PB-02 is intended for petrol engines up to 7.0 litres of displacement and diesel engines up to 6.0 litres of displacement. How many start attempts are possible on a single charge depends on engine size and outside temperature. Touratech states up to 20 start attempts per charge. This means the device can not only be carried in a motorcycle pannier, but can also generally be used with suitable cars fitted with a 12-volt lead-acid starter battery.

When jump-starting a starter battery, it's not just about the available power. Correct connection of the terminals also plays a role. The scope of delivery of the Power Box AIR PB-02 includes intelligent jump-start cables with spark and reverse-polarity protection. The reverse-polarity protection is designed to provide protection if the clamps are connected incorrectly. The spark protection complements the safety features when connecting to the starter battery.

The second main function of the Power Box comes into play when tyre pressure is too low. Integrated into the compact housing is an air compressor with a maximum pressure of 10.3 bar or 150 PSI. This means no separate electric compressor unit needs to be carried for air supply. Four preset programmes are available for operation. These are designed for motorcycle tyres, car tyres, bicycle tyres and balls.

In addition to the four preset programmes, the desired target pressure can also be set manually. Once the selected pressure is reached, the compressor switches off automatically. This is a particularly practical function when out on the road: the desired value is set, and the Power Box then takes care of the filling process up to the specified target pressure. The combination of preset programmes and manual setting extends the range of use beyond the motorcycle.

A breakdown doesn't necessarily have to involve the motorcycle itself. A dead smartphone battery can also become a problem on the road – especially when the phone is needed for navigation or communication. That's why the Power Box AIR PB-02 has USB ports and can be used as a power bank. Smartphones, tablets and other suitable devices can be supplied with power through it. This means the same energy store intended for jump-starting also takes on the job of powering mobile electronics.

The fourth function of the Power Box is an integrated LED flashlight. In addition to normal continuous light, the light offers a strobe mode as well as an SOS function. The light can be used, for example, when working on the motorcycle or in situations where additional visibility or a light signal is needed.

For operation, the Power Box AIR PB-02 features an LCD display. This shows the current charge status of the device and indicates the active function. Especially with a multi-function device, this display is relevant, since jump-starting, compressor, power bank and lighting all take on different tasks. This lets the user see directly on the device which function is active and how the Power Box's charge status stands.
