Anyone who wants to use navigation, music or group conversations on tour typically bolts a communication device to the outside of their helmet, threads cables under the liner and shuffles the speakers along the EPS inner shell until the sound is right and nothing is pressing. Sena flips this concept on its head with their Phantom ANC. The ECE 22.06-homologated full-face helmet was engineered around the electronics, microphones and acoustic chambers; nothing hangs off the side like a little sail in the wind, the weight distribution stays symmetrical and the system is essentially plug & play once paired. Add to that Mesh Intercom 3.0, Bluetooth 5.3, a front light, automatically activated rear lights, a sun visor, Ambient Mode and, of course, ANC. Lots of helmet, lots of tech, lots of promise.

Why do you need Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)?
Wind noise isn't just annoying – it makes long stages gruelling, forces music and intercom to ever-higher volume levels and can permanently damage your hearing. The occupational health reference value is 85 dB(A), based on an eight-hour working day. This figure cannot be directly applied to a motorcycle ride, but it does illustrate that sustained wind noise can seriously strain your hearing. ANC is not meant to silence the bike completely, but primarily to take the edge off the low, monotonous components of wind and drone noise. Sena claims up to 20 dB(A) of reduction. That is a peak figure and not a guaranteed attenuation across the entire frequency spectrum, because behind a tall screen, in turbulent airflow or with a poor neck seal, the sound waves are constantly changing. Additional hearing protection therefore remains a sensible supplement on fast and long stages.

First Impression – Sena Phantom ANC
In Glossy White, the Sena Phantom ANC is reminiscent of a Star Wars Stormtrooper – just without the questionable hit rate – while Matte Black and Glossy Black make a considerably more understated impression. The fibreglass composite shell, the soft inner liner, the cleanly clicking visor mechanism and the double-D ring closure generally convey the quality you'd expect at this price point; a small paint defect on the front of our test unit was, however, the proverbial scratch in the high-gloss picture.
Without an intercom unit flanged to the side, the helmet sits pleasantly and evenly on the head, even though Sena quotes 1,650 ± 50 grams for size M (ECE R22.06). Our control measurement of 1,716 grams including the Pinlock visor shows that reality is well within the stated figure. The fully equipped touring helmet is no featherweight, but what matters more than the raw mass is its balanced distribution.

Sena Phantom ANC Fit
On the European product page, Sena describes the internal shape as intermediate oval. With our three test riders, there was also a slight tendency towards round, and the helmet generally runs on the generous side. It sat firmly and securely on all three heads, and the mild forehead pressure remained unproblematic even over longer periods. At the sides, however, the differences became clear: the more snugly the padding, ear cups and neck roll sat against the head, the cleaner the speakers sounded and the more effectively the ANC worked. On the long-oval head, size M was comfortable, but the ear cups sat a little too far from the ears. On a rounder head shape, there was more lateral contact and therefore a better acoustic seal. This is why knowing your head circumference alone isn't enough with the Phantom ANC: the helmet needs to work not just during the fitting, but ideally in the wind as well.

The graphic is deliberately schematic, because two heads with identical circumferences can be built completely differently in terms of the ratio of forehead to back of head.
With the Phantom ANC, there's a second fitting check: the removable ear cups must fully enclose each ear without folding it over, while the speakers should sit as close as possible without applying pressure. One colleague had to reposition his ears in the cups every single time he put the helmet on – about as elegant as changing gloves in the rain, but critical for sound quality and ANC performance. Glasses wearers should bring both sunglasses and prescription glasses to the fitting. On one test rider, no glasses at all would fit under the padding; on another, the arms pressed in and additionally compromised the acoustic seal.

Field of View, Ventilation and Acoustics of the Sena Phantom ANC
The clear visor offers a wide, distortion-free field of view, clicks in cleanly and can be removed in seconds for cleaning or swapping. Our test helmets came with a high-quality Pinlock insert – though the scope of delivery may vary depending on market and retailer. A mirrored visor is not available.
The internal sun visor operates smoothly, but sits very close to the face due to the compact shell and is comparatively short. Depending on helmet size, nose shape and riding position, its lower edge can intrude into the field of view. Two test riders found the ventilation decent but by no means brisk: the openings at the chin, forehead and crown deliver noticeable fresh air. The third rider, however, reported little effect in an upright touring position. Here too, the direction of airflow plays a decisive role.
Even passively, the Phantom ANC offers pleasant attenuation and remains free of the annoying whistling noises that externally mounted intercoms can cause. With ANC activated, hiss and drone were at least slightly reduced at moderate speeds for all three test riders, though wind noise never disappeared entirely.

Control via App, Voice Recognition or Buttons
Pairing, OTA updates and configuration via the Sena Motorcycles App were self-explanatory, the multilingual manual is available online, and the last selected ANC setting is retained after a restart.
The buttons follow a logical layout and can be found by feel with gloves on; the ANC button, of all things, sits on the right at the throttle hand and demands more attention while riding than we'd like. "Hey Sena" controls, according to the official list, volume, music, phone and Mesh among other things – but not ANC or lights. In testing, the voice recognition swallowed roughly every third attempt. The front and rear lights are operated by the rider via button or app; the front work light switches off automatically after around five minutes, while the rear light responds to detected deceleration but is not coupled to the motorcycle's brake.

Integrated Open Mesh Communication System
The true strength of the Phantom ANC lies not in the ANC but in the integrated communication system. Open Mesh offers six channels for any number of participants, while Group Mesh keeps a private group of up to 24 riders connected – Sena quotes a range of up to two kilometres in open terrain.
In the editorial test, there was nothing to fault in terms of operation or voice clarity: anyone already riding with Sena Mesh gets a perfectly integrated, clean solution. The catch shows up in mixed groups: Bluetooth 5.3 connects a phone, a second phone, GPS or a compatible action cam, but it does not replace a universal direct Bluetooth intercom.

How Sena's ANC Works
Dedicated microphones capture sound directly at the ear chamber. The electronics analyse the signal in real time and generate an anti-phase sound wave through the speakers. Where crest and trough align as closely as possible, the sound pressure in certain frequency ranges is genuinely reduced. The system doesn't mask the noise with even more noise – it attenuates it before it reaches the eardrum.
With a steady drone, such as on an aeroplane, ANC can work relatively easily. Inside a motorcycle helmet, conditions change constantly: head movements, screen edges, crosswinds, jacket collars, and the aerodynamics and engine character of the particular bike all permanently influence frequencies and volume. The up to 20 dB(A) Sena quotes can therefore be achieved under favourable conditions, but are no guarantee for every head, every bike and every speed.
The decisive lever remains refreshingly analogue: the closer the microphones and speakers sit to the ear and the more tightly the ear cups seal, the less the algorithm has to work its magic.
The key finding of our test

Sena Ambient Mode in Everyday Use
The Ambient Mode was the more clear-cut effect across all heads. A long press on the ANC button feeds outside sounds through the microphones and speakers to the inside, making conversations at the petrol station, a quick question at a traffic light or a roadside chat with the police possible without removing the helmet – and without sounding like you're talking through a closed garage door.
ANC and Ambient Mode do not work simultaneously: when noise cancellation is activated, the helmet automatically switches off Ambient Mode. The latter is primarily intended for brief conversations while stationary, not as a permanent hearing aid while riding. At the petrol station or during a short chat, however, it proves to be an unassuming everyday helper that you quickly come to appreciate.

The Sena Phantom ANC in the 1000PS Real-World Test
A single head on a single bike would have quickly led to a misleading verdict here. Over the course of the test, two identical units of the Sena Phantom ANC running the latest software were ridden by three test riders on a total of six bikes – from a largely unprotected scooter through naked bikes and cruisers to a touring bike with a proper screen. Tested were rides with and without ANC, different head positions, A-road and motorway speeds, music, Mesh, Ambient Mode and the influence of varying degrees of wind protection.
The impressions varied remarkably widely: they ranged from "for a 100-euro premium it actually works pretty well" to "homeopathic improvement with a faint rustle". It was precisely this striking discrepancy that prompted us to request a second test helmet.

With the first unit, the ANC effect for one rider at 100 km/h was so minimal that we initially suspected a defect. On top of that, at lower speeds a faint rustling appeared, reminiscent of a headphone with a loose connection or a dusty stylus. Since this behaviour also occurred with the second helmet on three different bikes, we were largely able to rule out a defect in the first unit.
In the end, the direct comparison of the three test riders provided a plausible explanation. On the long-oval head of rider number one, the helmet sat more generously at the sides. As a result, the ear cups sealed less tightly, while the speakers and ANC microphones remained comparatively far from the ears. This allowed more varying wind noise to penetrate the ear chambers, to which the ANC partially responded with the rustling described. On the colleagues whose heads the helmet enclosed more firmly at the sides, the problem only occurred in exceptional cases and the noise cancellation worked noticeably better.

Test Rider #1: NoPain (long-oval head, size M)
On the predominantly long-oval head, size M sat comfortably and made firm contact at the forehead and back of the head, but did not seal tightly enough around the ears. The soft ear cups enclosed the ears fully, yet the speakers and ANC microphones remained too far away. Above 80 km/h, the music increasingly faded into the background; at 120 km/h it was only usable at high volume. When ANC was activated at a steady 100 km/h, only the tonal character of the wind noise shifted towards a duller sound, while engine noise and overall volume remained almost equally present. Rolling through town, a faint rustling also appeared, particularly when glancing sideways into the mirror. When the helmet shell was pressed laterally against the ears, the ANC effect suddenly kicked in noticeably. For this rider the helmet itself worked well, but the ANC premium delivered little added value.

Test Rider #2: Howie (intermediate-oval head, size M)
The second rider found the helmet a better fit, causing no bothersome pressure at the temples or ears. Under the padding, however, so little space remained that no glasses would fit comfortably. On the adventure bike, the ANC transformed a loud thudding into a noticeably quieter murmur at 70 km/h. At 100 km/h the advantage shrank again, and the helmet never became truly quiet.
The speakers sat closer to the ears than on rider one, which benefited both sound quality and ANC performance, though it couldn't compensate for every turbulence. Howie's verdict: ANC is a useful comfort extra whose benefit is more pronounced on A-roads than at sustained high speeds. Whether it makes the decisive difference on tour probably depends on the individual combination of head shape, glasses, windshield and cruising speed.

Test Rider #3: Patrick Schneuwly from AcidMoto.ch (intermediate-oval head, size M)
On the third test rider, the side padding sat snugly without clamping the temples – which allowed the ANC to demonstrate its potential far more effectively. On a bike with a windshield, the effect remained perceptible even at higher speeds: with an upright head and ANC off it was loud, behind the screen the noise level dropped, and with ANC switched on it became quieter still. Even in an upright position it was easy to identify which frequencies the system was filtering out. On the scooter without a screen, the difference was noticeably smaller. Depending on the bike, parts of the engine noise were also attenuated. The faint rustling only appeared occasionally, at certain speeds and with the head turned to the right.
Putting the helmet on remained a chore: the ears had to be repositioned in the cups every time, otherwise pressure points developed. As an everyday helmet, the Phantom ANC nonetheless impressed with high comfort, fully integrated communication and potentially better visibility thanks to the additional lights in urban traffic. The noise cancellation was clearly perceptible for this rider, but not a must-have. Because he is particularly sensitive to noise, he continues to ride with earplugs even in the Phantom ANC. The internal sun visor also falls short for him.

Who the Sena Phantom ANC is For
The Sena Phantom ANC suits touring riders, commuters and riding groups who already use Sena Mesh, don't want an external device on their helmet and are willing to seriously check fit and ear position. It is particularly convincing on intermediate-oval to slightly rounder heads where the padding seals tightly at the sides and the bike delivers a clean or well-protected airflow. It is less suited to very long-oval heads with lateral play, glasses wearers with sensitive ears, sport riders watching their weight and mixed intercom groups.
Anyone expecting living-room silence at 130 km/h, or who wants to ditch earplugs entirely because of ANC, is buying against the laws of physics. Anyone looking for a cleanly integrated touring package with perceptible but not complete noise reduction, however, could be onto a winner.
