Anyone who wants to use navigation, music or group conversations on tour usually mounts a communication device onto the outside of their helmet, threads cables under the liner and shifts the speakers along the EPS inner shell until the sound is right and nothing presses uncomfortably. Sena flips this principle on its head with the Phantom ANC. The ECE 22.06-homologated full-face helmet was built around electronics, microphones and acoustic chambers; nothing hangs off the side like a little sail in the wind, weight distribution stays symmetrical, and the system is practically plug & play once paired. On top of that come Mesh Intercom 3.0, Bluetooth 5.3, a front light, automatically reacting rear lights, a sun visor, an ambient mode, and, of course, ANC. Lots of helmet, lots of tech, lots of promise.

After two helmets, three testers and six bikes, we know: with the Sena Phantom ANC, it's not just the spec sheet that decides, but the optimal contact between padding and head.

Why do you need Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)?
Wind noise isn't just annoying — it makes long stretches exhausting, forces music and intercom volumes ever higher, and can permanently damage hearing. The occupational health reference value is 85 dB(A), based on an eight-hour working day. This figure can't be directly applied to a motorcycle ride, but it does illustrate that continuous wind noise can seriously strain your hearing. However, ANC isn't meant to mute the bike completely, but rather to defuse the low, constant components of wind and drone noise in particular. Sena claims up to 20 dB(A) of reduction. That's a maximum figure, not a level of sound insulation guaranteed across the entire frequency spectrum, since sound waves are constantly changing behind a tall windscreen, in turbulent airflow, or with a leaky neck seal. That's why additional hearing protection remains a sensible addition on fast, long stretches.

First impression – Sena Phantom ANC
In Glossy White, the Sena Phantom ANC brings to mind a Star Wars stormtrooper — minus the questionable hit rate — while Matte Black and Glossy Black are considerably more understated. The fiberglass composite shell, the soft interior lining, the cleanly clicking visor mechanism and the double-D closure fundamentally convey the quality one expects in this price bracket; a small paint flaw on the front of our test unit was, however, the proverbial scratch in the glossy picture.
Without an intercom flanged to the side, the helmet sits comfortably and evenly on the head, even though Sena states 1,650 ± 50 grams for size M (ECE R22.06). Our control measurement of 1,716 grams including the Pinlock visor shows that reality is well within the stated range. The fully equipped touring helmet isn't a featherweight, but more important than sheer mass is its balanced distribution.

Sena Phantom ANC fit
On the European product page, Sena describes the interior shape as intermediate-oval, i.e. medium-oval. With our three testers there was also a slight tendency toward round, with the helmet overall running rather generous. It sat firmly and securely on all three heads, and the slight forehead pressure remained unproblematic even over longer periods. However, the wheat separated from the chaff at the sides: The more snugly the padding, ear cups and neck roll sat against the head, the clearer the speakers sounded and the more effectively the ANC worked. On the long-oval head, size M was comfortable, but the ear cups sat a bit too far from the ears. With a more rounded head shape, there was more side contact and thus better acoustic sealing. That's why, with the Phantom ANC, it's not enough to just know your head circumference: the helmet has to work not only at try-on but ideally also in the wind while riding.

The graphic is deliberately schematic, since two heads with identical circumference can be built completely differently in terms of the ratio of forehead to back of the head.
With the Phantom ANC there's a second fit test: the removable ear cups need to fully enclose each ear without folding it over, while the speakers should sit as close as possible without pressing. One colleague had to reposition his ears in the cups every time he put the helmet on — about as elegant as changing gloves in the rain, but crucial for sound and ANC. Glasses wearers should bring both sunglasses and prescription glasses to the fitting. For one test subject, no glasses at all fit under the padding; for another, the arms pressed and additionally worsened the acoustic seal.

Field of view, ventilation and acoustics of the Sena Phantom ANC
The clear visor offers a wide, distortion-free field of view, clicks in cleanly, and can be removed in a flash for cleaning or replacement. Our test helmets were supplied with a high-quality Pinlock insert — though the scope of delivery may vary by market and retailer. A mirrored visor is not offered.
The internal sun visor operates smoothly but, due to the compact front, sits very close to the face and is comparatively short. Depending on helmet size, nose shape and seating position, its lower edge can intrude into the field of view. Two testers found the ventilation decent but by no means stormy: the vents at the chin, forehead and top of the head deliver noticeable fresh air. The third tester, however, reported little effect in an upright touring position. Here too, the airflow angle plays a decisive role.
Even passively, the Phantom ANC offers pleasant damping and stays free of the annoying whistling that externally mounted intercoms can cause. With ANC activated, rustling and droning at medium speed were at least slightly reduced for all three testers, though wind noise never disappeared entirely.

Operation via app, voice recognition or buttons
Pairing, OTA updates and configuration via the Sena Motorcycles app worked intuitively, the multilingual manual is available online, and the last selected ANC setting is retained after restart.
The buttons follow a logical layout and can be felt with gloves; of all places, the ANC button sits on the right by the throttle hand and demands more attention while riding than we'd like. According to the official list, "Hey Sena" controls things like volume, music, phone and Mesh, but not ANC or the lights. In testing, voice recognition swallowed roughly every third attempt. Riders operate the front and rear lights via button or app; the front work light switches off automatically after about five minutes, and the rear light reacts to detected deceleration but isn't coupled to the bike's brake.

Integrated Open Mesh communication system
The true strength of the Phantom ANC lies not in the ANC, but in the integrated communication system. Open Mesh offers six channels for any number of participants, while Group Mesh holds together a private group of up to 24 riders — Sena states a range of up to two kilometers in open terrain.
In our editorial test there was nothing to criticize about operation and voice clarity: anyone already riding with Sena Mesh gets a perfectly integrated, tidy solution. The catch shows up in mixed groups: Bluetooth 5.3 connects a phone, a second phone, GPS, or a compatible action cam, but it doesn't replace a direct universal Bluetooth intercom.

How Sena's ANC works
Dedicated microphones pick up sound directly at the ear chamber. The electronics analyze the signal in real time and generate an anti-phase sound wave via the speakers. When wave crest and trough overlap as precisely as possible, sound pressure in certain frequency ranges is actually reduced. So the system doesn't mask the noise with more noise, but weakens it before it reaches the eardrum.
With a uniform drone, such as on an airplane, ANC can work comparatively easily. Inside a motorcycle helmet, however, conditions are constantly changing: head movements, windscreen edges, crosswinds, jacket collars, as well as the aerodynamics and engine character of the respective bike constantly influence frequencies and volume. The up to 20 dB(A) that Sena states can therefore be achieved under favorable conditions, but is no guarantee for every head, every bike and every speed.
The decisive lever, however, remains pleasantly analog: the closer the microphones and speakers sit to the ear and the tighter the ear chambers seal, the less the algorithm has to work magic.
Only when the helmet fits optimally around the ears and neck can the electronics do their job.
The main takeaway from our test

Sena Ambient Mode in everyday use
Ambient mode was the clearer effect across all heads. A long press on the ANC button lets outside noises through via the microphones and speakers, so conversations at the gas station, a quick question at a traffic light, or a police cross-examination are possible without taking the helmet off and without sounding like you're talking through a closed garage door.
ANC and Ambient Mode don't work simultaneously: when noise cancellation is activated, the helmet automatically switches off ambient mode. This is mainly intended for short conversations while stationary and not as a permanent hearing aid while riding. At the gas station or during a brief chat, though, it proves to be an unfussy everyday helper that you quickly learn to appreciate.

The Sena Phantom ANC in the 1000PS practical test
A single head on a single bike would quickly have led to a misleading judgment here. During the course of the test, two identical units of the Sena Phantom ANC with current software were therefore ridden by three testers on a total of six bikes — from a largely unprotected scooter, through naked bikes and cruisers, to a touring bike with a decent windscreen. Rides were tested with and without ANC, at different head positions, at country road and highway speeds, with music, mesh, ambient mode, and the influence of varying degrees of wind protection.
The impressions varied remarkably widely: they ranged from "for a 100-euro surcharge that actually works pretty well" to "a homeopathic improvement with a faint rustle." This striking discrepancy was exactly the reason for requesting a second test helmet.

With the first unit, the ANC effect remained so minimal for one tester at 100 km/h that we initially suspected a defect. On top of that, a faint rustling appeared at lower speeds, reminiscent of headphones with a loose connection or a dusty record needle. Since this behavior also occurred with the second helmet on three different bikes, we could largely rule out a defect in the first unit.
In the end, direct comparison of the three testers provided a plausible explanation. With tester number one's long-oval head, the helmet sat more generously at the sides. As a result, the ear cups sealed less tightly, while the speakers and ANC microphones stayed comparatively far from the ears. This let more changing wind noise into the ear chambers, which the ANC partly responded to with the rustling described. For the colleagues whose heads the helmet enclosed more firmly at the sides, the problem only occurred in exceptional cases, and the noise cancellation worked noticeably better.

Tester #1: NoPain (long-oval head, size M)
With the tendentially long-oval head, the helmet in size M sat comfortably and fit firmly against the forehead and back of the head, but didn't seal tightly enough around the ears. The soft ear cups fully enclosed the ears, but the speakers and ANC microphones remained too far away. From 80 km/h, the music increasingly faded into the background; at 120 km/h it was only usable at high volume. Activating ANC at a constant 100 km/h merely changed the tonal color of the wind noise toward dull, while engine noise and overall volume stayed almost equally present. When rolling through town, a faint rustling was also added, especially when glancing sideways into the mirror. When the shell was pressed sideways against the ears, the ANC effect suddenly kicked in noticeably. For this rider, the helmet itself worked well, but the ANC surcharge brought hardly any added value.

Tester #2: Howie (medium-oval head, size M)
The helmet fit the second tester better and caused no annoying pressure at either the temples or the ears. However, there was so little space under the padding that no glasses fit comfortably. On the adventure touring bike, ANC turned a loud drumming at 70 km/h into a noticeably quieter murmur. At 100 km/h the advantage shrank again; it never truly became quiet inside the helmet.
The speakers sat closer to the ears than with tester one, which benefited both the sound and the ANC effect, though it couldn't compensate for every bit of turbulence. Howie's conclusion: ANC is a useful comfort extra, whose benefit is more pronounced on country roads than at sustained high speeds. Whether it makes the decisive difference on tour probably depends on the personal combination of head shape, glasses, windscreen and travel speed.

Tester #3: Patrick Schneuwly from AcidMoto.ch (medium-oval head, size M)
For the third tester, the side padding sat snugly without pinching the temples — allowing the ANC to show its potential much better. On a bike with a windscreen, the effect remained noticeable even at higher speeds: with an upright head position and ANC off, it was loud; behind the screen, the noise level dropped; with ANC switched on, it got quieter still. Even in an upright position, it was easy to tell which frequencies the system was filtering out. On the scooter without a screen, the difference was noticeably smaller. Depending on the bike, parts of the engine noise were also dampened. The faint rustling only occurred occasionally, at certain speeds and with the head turned to the right.
Putting the helmet on remained annoying: the ears had to be repositioned in the cups every time, otherwise pressure points developed. As a daily helmet, the Phantom ANC nonetheless convinced with high comfort, fully integrated communication, and possibly better visibility thanks to the additional lights in city traffic. The noise cancellation was clearly noticeable for this tester, but not a must-have. Because he's particularly noise-sensitive, he still rides with earplugs even in the Phantom ANC. He also finds the internal sun visor too short.

The target audience for the Sena Phantom ANC
The Sena Phantom ANC suits touring riders, commuters and travel groups who already use Sena Mesh, don't want an external device on the helmet, and are willing to seriously check fit and ear position. It's especially convincing on medium-oval to slightly rounder heads, when the padding seals tightly at the sides and the bike delivers a clean or well-protected airflow. It's less suitable for very long-oval heads with side play, sensitive glasses wearers, sport riders chasing weight savings, and mixed intercom groups.
Anyone expecting living-room silence at 130 km/h, or who wants to do without earplugs on principle because of ANC, is buying against the laws of physics. But anyone looking for a cleanly integrated touring package with noticeable, if not complete, noise reduction could be making the right choice.

Conclusion: Sena Phantom ANC full-face helmet
The Sena Phantom ANC is, first and foremost, a very well-made, comfortable touring helmet with a cleanly integrated mesh system, uncomplicated operation, a decent visor, lighting, sun visor, ECE 22.06 approval, a genuinely useful ambient mode and a five-year warranty. Only after that comes the active noise cancellation — and its effectiveness in our test ranged from "almost homeopathic" to "clearly noticeable." Head shape, ear distance, wind protection and speed were decisive for actual ANC performance. If the helmet sits tightly at the sides and the ears sit cleanly in the cups, the price of 619 euros — and thus a 100-euro surcharge over the standard Phantom — can be justified. If too much air remains around the ears, it's precisely the ANC feature that can't deliver its performance. Alternatively, within the Phantom family, the standard Phantom, the more powerful-sounding XB, or the CAM variant with an integrated camera could be the more sensible choice — depending on availability and personal priorities. Before buying, an extensive fitting, ideally supplemented by a test ride in the city, on country roads and at higher speeds, should be decisive. In the end, fit remains more important than the algorithm.
