Auxiliary headlights are available cheap, compact and often directly from the motorcycle manufacturer. The Lone Rider MTL9, however, want to be far more than just two powerful lights. On the BMW R 1300 GSA we find out whether 180-watt LEDs, MotoCAN integration and a particularly intelligent control system justify the steep price.

Modern motorcycle headlights are already astonishingly capable today, yet even the standard-fit LED lighting of a BMW R 1300 GS Adventure eventually reaches its physical limits. Namely exactly where the rider needs to make out more than just asphalt at night: far beyond the next reflector post, deep into the radius of a corner, and above all to the left and right of the road, where a deer, a hare or an unlit tractor rarely stand politely in the beam. But even during the day, in dense city traffic, in hazy weather or with a low sun, extra presence can be decisive. Whoever is spotted earlier simply has more reserves.

Auxiliary headlights close exactly this gap. Accordingly, there are numerous model-specific solutions both from BMW itself and from well-known accessory manufacturers. The central question is therefore not whether the Lone Rider MTL9 Motorcycle Lights shine brighter than classic auxiliary headlights. They do. What's more interesting is to what extent their added value goes beyond the usual principle of "two lamps, one relay, one switch" through a clever combination of light output, light distribution, robustness and integration, and whether the steep price is justified in real-world use.

Because the MTL9 bundles position light, wide near-field light, high beam and an extremely focused spot in two massive housings, communicates with the BMW via MotoCAN, and can be controlled via the standard controls.

This makes them appeal to connoisseurs, high-mileage riders, commuters, adventure tourers and night owls who regularly encounter wildlife crossings, bad weather or poorly lit roads.

What sets the Lone Rider MTL9 apart from the competition

Lone Rider confidently calls the MTL9 "the smartest auxiliary lighting system for motorcycles worldwide." Such superlatives usually smell of voodoo and smoke machines the moment you open the manufacturer's website, but here there's genuinely more to it than an app and a colourfully lit ring. Each light works with separate light zones for near field, distance and position light. Via MotoCAN the system accesses signals such as high beam, indicators, hazard lights, horn, speed, and the detected day or night operation. The lights therefore don't hang off the bike as an electrical foreign body, but become part of the existing control logic.

The practical benefit is considerable: in city traffic the MTL9 stay restrained, on dark country roads they light up widely, and at higher speeds they automatically unlock additional range. There's no need for a separate controller or hunting through nested menus. Still, there remains a residual risk of human euphoria, because anyone who sets everything to 100 percent produces impressive light cones but won't make friends with oncoming traffic. The system can do a lot, but it also needs to be configured sensibly.

The two round MTL9 headlights look massive, cleanly manufactured, and with their deep cooling fins resemble industrial lighting technology. Each lamp measures 114 millimetres in diameter, is 75 millimetres deep, reaches 125 millimetres in height with the mount, and weighs 840 grams. The pair therefore tips the scales at 1,680 grams before mounts, cables and MotoCAN are added. That's a different kind of unsprung weight, but a BMW R 1300 GSA won't develop a list from that yet.

The black aluminium housing, the polycarbonate lens and the stainless steel mount convey exactly the kind of solidity you'd want on an adventure tourer. The technical documentation lists a clear Lexan lens with UV coating, a black aluminium housing and insulated copper wiring. Connectors, blanking plugs and mounts also feel high quality, the cables are properly sized, and protective strips as well as rubber inserts prevent vibrations from quickly polishing the crash bar to a shine.

Scope of delivery: MTL9 complete package for the BMW R 1300 GSA (Art. No. 55800842649974)

The motorcycle-specific package includes two MTL9 pods with three-pin MT connectors, two black covers, two one-metre extension cables, a Y-splitter, the so-called under-nose mount for the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure, universal tube clamps and further mounting hardware. Added to this are the vehicle-specific MotoCAN module, blanking plugs, three connector fittings, rubber seals, a spare cover for the USB port, twenty cable ties, and the connection cable for configuration on a computer.

The black covers aren't merely garage decoration. They protect the lenses during transport or longer periods of standing still and allow the auxiliary lights to be fully covered if needed. Lone Rider offers a transparent stone-chip protector separately for currently 20 euros. Especially on an adventure tourer that regularly gets pelted with gravel behind other bikes, that's a genuinely sensible addition. It remains annoying, though, that this protection isn't included as standard given a complete package price close to four figures.

The term "Combo 6 in 1" sounds at first like the description of a Chinese pocket knife, but it becomes comprehensible once you look at the optics. At the centre of each light sits a strongly focused spot LED, whose light is projected into the distance through a 2-degree optic. The lower four LEDs handle the wide illumination of the near and mid range, while the upper four LEDs reinforce the actual high beam. Around the outside sits the position light ring, which lights up either white or amber. Lone Rider states ten power levels for the ring as well as the option to switch it off completely.

The homologation documents provide additional details that easily get lost on the product page. For the white front position light, 28 permanently installed LEDs at 12 volts and 6 watts are documented per housing. The high beam uses nine permanently installed LEDs at 12 volts and 71 watts and is approved as a class B headlight. The LEDs cannot be replaced individually, which is common with modern, sealed LED systems, but in the event of a defect after the warranty period means the entire module has to be replaced or repaired.

MTL9 MotoCAN integration

The lights, however, are just the muscle; the actual nervous system is the MotoCAN module. This is connected to the battery and the BMW's XDWA or alarm system connector and then reads the bike's CAN bus signals. This way the system recognises high beam, indicators, hazard lights, horn, speed and operating state without cutting into wiring or requiring additional switches. Both MTL9 units share one configured output, while further MotoCAN channels remain free for accessories such as a horn, auxiliary brake light or heated equipment. The declaration of conformity also cites ECE R10 tests for emissions and electromagnetic interference immunity.

The benefit becomes apparent while riding, when the lights automatically adjust their output to ambient light, high beam and speed. According to external analysis, each light even runs two circuit boards: one controls the LEDs, the second translates the communication data. This explains why there's considerably more technology built in here than in a classic auxiliary headlight with plus, minus and a relay.

Fitting the MTL9 to the BMW R 1300 GSA

Installation basically follows the same scheme on all motorcycles, though the actual complexity depends heavily on the specific model. On the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure, fitting is pleasantly quick and clean, and can be managed by any competent wrencher with a bit of patience and reasonably usable tools. Lone Rider intends to publish an accordingly updated installation video on its own channels shortly.

The MotoCAN module is mounted under the cover the rider's seat rests on. Next you route the Y-splitter down the right side of the bike, undo the two tank mounting screws, and remove the plastic side covers below the tank. The fuel tank can optionally be lifted slightly to route the cables underneath, though this isn't strictly necessary: the Y-splitter's leads can just as cleanly be routed behind the removed covers and connected there to the lights' cables. An elaborate removal of the tank or larger side fairing panels is therefore not required. In total, only around ten largely identical screws need to be undone, so the risk of a later screw-losing lottery remains manageable.

Mounting and alignment on the GSA

In the tested package, the lights are mounted below the vehicle's nose, which integrates them visually well into the GSA's massive front and simultaneously creates a striking light triangle with the main headlight. Alternatively, Lone Rider offers tube clamps for diameters of roughly 22 to 25 millimetres. The manufacturer rates the standard plastic mounts of some BMW auxiliary headlights as not sturdy enough for the heavy MTL9 pods. Likewise, when using under-nose solutions, the combination with existing upper crash bars must be carefully checked.

During installation, protective film, rubber inserts and dampening washers are used so the coating and mount don't suffer. Initially the pods remain slightly movable, then the bike is positioned on level ground and the light cone is adjusted. This last step is not cosmetic fine-tuning. Just a few degrees too high turns the wide light carpet into a mobile interrogation lamp for oncoming traffic. With a fully loaded GSA carrying a pillion and touring luggage, the bike's stance changes further, which is why alignment should be checked again after the first night ride and under realistic load conditions.

Initial configuration is not done via smartphone but via desktop software and a USB connection. After registration and a firmware check, the program scans the connected devices and displays the MTL9's functions. The white MotoCAN channel is used for the lights and, according to the installation instructions, is fused/configured at 15 amps.

Technically clean, yet somewhat old-fashioned in 2026: pull out the laptop, plug in the cable, switch on the ignition, wait for the update. An app would be more convenient, though honestly you don't fiddle with the basic light parameters every week.

Among the adjustable settings are the intensity of the position light ring for day and night, its colour, the power of the wide and long-range light zones, and several responses to vehicle signals. The software shown allows a minimum ring brightness of 10 percent, full power, or complete deactivation. Additionally, the rings can work together with the indicators, react alternately during hazard flashing, or be dimmed during certain lighting functions. Strobe functions triggered by the horn or multiple high-beam flashes are also provided for. Technically exciting, but depending on the country and configuration, legally tricky on public roads. Not everything the computer lets you click belongs on the highway.

One of the most interesting functions is called Speed Blending. Here the strongly focused central spot isn't simply switched on abruptly with every high-beam activation, but is blended in depending on speed. In the software version shown, the default value is 100 km/h; the adjustable range is stated as roughly 80 to 140 km/h. Below the defined threshold, the system works with wider light; above it, the additional range is added in stages. The rider therefore gets more visibility exactly where the distance covered per second increases.

In practice this makes more sense than a permanently active 700-metre beam. On a tight, wet mountain pass, a bright point on the horizon doesn't help much when the relevant information lies thirty metres ahead of the front wheel. On a fast, straight highway, on the other hand, its benefit grows massively. Still, the threshold shouldn't simply be adopted blindly from the default. Anyone who mostly rides twisty roads can choose a lower value; anyone who spends a lot of time in densely populated areas sets it higher or operates the spot deliberately by hand.

The biggest gain in comfort on the BMW showed up not in the configuration program but directly at the handlebar. If the multi-function ring is pressed outward for about four seconds, the system confirms the switch to setting mode. The brightness can then be adjusted via the standard BMW controls. This lets the rider adapt the light output to traffic, weather and surroundings while riding, without an additional app and without a proprietary dial on the handlebar.

It's precisely this function that sets the MTL9 apart from many cheaper solutions in daily use. Classic auxiliary headlights are either on or off, at best supplemented with a separate dimmer whose control logic you also have to remember alongside cruise control, riding mode, grip heating and navigation. The Lone Rider units, by contrast, integrate cleanly into the GSA's existing ergonomics. After a short familiarisation period, adjustment succeeds almost blind and allows output to be dialled back in a flash when facing oncoming traffic.

With auxiliary headlights, the small E approval mark matters more than the big lumen figure. The MTL9 is approved under UN R148 as a front position lamp of category A, under UN R149 as a class B high-beam headlight, and additionally under ECE R10 for electromagnetic compatibility. The corresponding markings are located directly on the lens.

A component approval, however, doesn't mean that every installation and software function is automatically permitted everywhere. What matters is correct positioning, symmetrical mounting, appropriate switching, clean alignment and, above all: no one may be dazzled. An approved light and a code-compliant installation are legally two different pairs of shoes.

Blink and strobe functions are especially critical. The fact that they're technically available by no means means they're cleared for public road use. When in doubt, an inspection authority, workshop or official body should clarify which settings are permitted in the respective country.

During the day, the greatest benefit lies not in illuminating the road surface but in the enlarged visual silhouette. The main headlight and two lower-mounted MTL9 units form a striking triangle that makes an oncoming motorcycle stand out more easily from the visual clutter of car headlights, reflections and road signs. The amber ring appears distinctive without necessarily seeming aggressive, while white sits visually closer to BMW's standard light signature. How strongly the system stands out can be configured separately for day and night.

The art lies in finding the right measure. High daytime output can be pleasantly visible on wide, bright roads, but already unpleasant in rear-view mirrors on shaded avenues or with a low sun. The quick adjustment on the bike is therefore a genuine safety feature. Visibility is good. Consideration is better.

Although the BMW R 1300 GSA already comes with a usable main headlight as standard, the light pattern changes fundamentally with the Lone Rider MTL9. The wide light carpet fills the dark zones right next to the road, makes corner entries readable earlier, and brings forest edges, junctions and possible wildlife-crossing zones much more strongly into view. Instead of a single bright patch, a larger information area is created, which also lets the seat-of-the-pants sense work more relaxed automatically. Then comes the full-on punch from the high beam: the upper LED segments push the existing BMW light cone considerably further, while the central spot creates an additional, compact ball of light at the end of the visible stretch. The manufacturer's credible figure is 1 lux at 700 metres. Our test rider Frankee, after two night rides, even spoke subjectively of a visibility range of about a kilometre. That's not a measured lab range, but it credibly describes how far away contours and reflections could still be perceived.

The brute power does, however, have a downside: the brighter the high beam, the harder the switch back to low beam hits, because the eye and perception have adapted to the significantly brighter surroundings. The MTL9 should therefore not be operated on maximum power as a rule, but as strong as necessary and as restrained as possible. This is exactly where the separate settings and Speed Blending pay off. The rider can keep the wide illumination high but only let the extreme spot switch in when speed and road actually justify it.

Off-road, it's not the theoretical maximum range that's the star, but the wide near field. Ruts, loose stones, branches and terrain falling away to the side must be recognised early, while the central far point on a twisting forest track often just lights up the bushes or shines straight into the next hillside. The lower four LEDs per pod produce the more valuable light carpet here, because it makes the area in front of the front wheel and the escape routes to the sides visible. The rider can decide more quickly whether the dark spot is a shadow, a hole, or just a wet stone.

The massive amount of light tempts you to ride at night almost as if it were day. This works surprisingly well, but doesn't change the fact that contrasts, depth perception and unexpected obstacles look different under artificial light. On dusty tracks the spot should be dialled back, because self-glare increases significantly. Here the system's advantage shows again: it's not one lamp that has to do everything somehow, but several light zones that can be combined to suit the situation.

During our rides on the road and off-road, the MTL9 worked unobtrusively and reliably. There were no dropouts, no annoying flickering, and no noticeable change in alignment. The high inherent weight and the massive mounts do, however, demand clean installation with correctly torqued screws, protective layers and neatly routed cables.

Thermally, too, the lights remained stable. Of the 145 watts of power draw, naturally not all of it becomes light; part of it ends up as heat in the housing. Even during extended use with little cooling airflow off-road, no overheating could be detected. Large cooling fins and the massive aluminium body dissipate the heat to the ambient air; according to the manufacturer, the system is rated for -20 to +50 degrees Celsius. We did not, however, carry out an instrumented temperature test, so concrete margins cannot be seriously quantified.

With IP68 and IP69K, the MTL9 is also protected against dust, water and intensive cleaning. Rain, mud, river crossings and subsequent washing therefore clearly fit within the intended usage profile. Nevertheless, a pressure washer from ten centimetres away remains a rather bad idea.

Disclaimer: Our test spanned two weeks and included two intensive night rides as well as various operating conditions, but no multi-year long-term use. Statements about corrosion after five winters or the lifespan of the permanently installed LEDs would therefore be reading tea leaves. Reassuring is the five-year manufacturer warranty, which counts for a lot more with such an expensive, non-modularly repairable product than any "adventure tested" sticker.

After installation and configuration, the technical complexity fortunately recedes far into the background. High beam and brightness can be controlled via the familiar BMW controls, which is why the Lone Rider MTL9 lighting system feels more like an elaborate factory option than aftermarket-fitted accessories. For deeper settings such as light colour, day and night profiles, or Speed Blending, a computer and cable are still required, though. A smartphone app would be the obvious finishing touch here, especially since spontaneous changes on the road would be handled much more elegantly with one.

After two intensive night rides, Frankee called the MTL9 the most innovative auxiliary headlights he has tested so far. He was particularly impressed by the brutal light output, the enormous range, and the noticeable gain in safety on dark country roads with heavy wildlife crossing. His favourite detail, however, wasn't the maximum spot, but the direct adjustment via the BMW multi-function ring. It lets you adapt output on the fly to traffic and surroundings in a flash, before oncoming traffic has to involuntarily undergo a retina exam. On full high beam, his verdict was correspondingly brief: massive.

Conclusion: Lone Rider MTL9 for the BMW R 1300 GSA

The Lone Rider MTL9 doesn't win over solely with brutal light output, but above all with its intelligent control and the unusually tight integration with the bike. The wide light carpet makes corners, road edges and terrain considerably easier to read, the high beam delivers massive punch, and the focused spot reaches, according to the manufacturer, one lux even at 700 metres. Decisive, however, is the MotoCAN integration: Speed Blending, separate day and night profiles, position light rings and control via the standard BMW instruments ensure that the brute power isn't just present but also remains controllable in daily use. At 999 euros, the complete package clearly plays in the premium segment. Add to that considerable weight, an elaborate installation, and an initial configuration that still requires a computer and cable. However, you're not just paying for 23,200 lumens, but for robust housings, certifications, intelligent control and an integration that feels like a professional factory solution. Anyone just looking for a bit more light in front of the front wheel will find cheaper alternatives. High-mileage riders, adventure tourers and night owls, on the other hand, get one of the most convincing auxiliary lighting systems we've experienced so far.
