With the C5 ANC, Schuberth, together with Cardo, brings active noise cancellation to the premium flip-up helmet. The technology is meant to reduce wind noise, relieve strain on hearing, and make long stretches more pleasant. But how big is the difference compared to the normal C5 – and does ANC justify the surcharge?

Schuberth C5 and C5 ANC: Brothers, but Not Twins

Anyone familiar with the Schuberth C5 will immediately feel at home in the new C5 ANC. That's no coincidence, because structurally the ANC version is very closely based on the well-known premium flip-up helmet. The basic concept, operation, and touring-oriented focus remain largely unchanged.

Both helmets meet the current ECE-R 22.06 standard and feature P/J dual homologation. This means they can be legally ridden both closed as a full-face helmet and with the chin bar flipped up. Add to that the integrated sun visor, the ventilation designed for long distances, the aerodynamically optimized helmet shell, and the Schuberth Individual Program, which allows the interior lining to be adapted to different head shapes in multiple sizes.

The standard C5 is already prepared for integrated communication systems. Antennas, mounting points, and wiring are laid out so that systems like the SC Edge can be installed without external cable clutter. The communication module sits on the side, while the battery disappears into the rear area of the helmet. The key difference in the C5 ANC lies deeper inside the helmet. The ANC version features specially placed microphones, an adapted interior construction, and pre-installed 53-millimeter speakers developed together with Cardo. They are not only responsible for music, navigation, and speech, but also generate the counter-sound for active noise cancellation. Without the additional SC Edge ANC, however, the C5 ANC is initially just a correspondingly prepared helmet – the system only becomes active with the matching communication module.

This is exactly where an important distinction lies: the C5 ANC is not simply an ordinary C5 with stronger speakers. Helmet, microphones, speakers, signal processing, and communication system were developed as a complete acoustic system. The underlying research also cites more than 200 hours of tuning work in the Schuberth wind tunnel.

What Does Active Noise Cancelling Do in a Motorcycle Helmet?

ANC stands for Active Noise Cancellation, i.e., active noise suppression. Microphones capture the sounds inside and outside the helmet. The electronics analyze these sound waves and generate a phase-shifted signal through the speakers. When the disruptive noise and the counter-sound meet, they weaken each other.

The technology is known from high-quality headphones. In a motorcycle helmet, however, the task is considerably more difficult. Wind noise is constantly changing, turbulence hits the helmet from different directions, the rider moves their head, and windshield, riding position, and clothing also influence the noise environment.

Schuberth and Cardo therefore do not attempt to make all sounds disappear. The goal is not sterile silence, but a targeted reduction of certain, particularly stressful frequencies. Above all, the low-frequency droning and rushing of wind and turbulence should be reduced. Traffic noise, the rider's own bike, and high-frequency warning signals should remain perceptible.

This is crucial, because a motorcycle helmet must not completely shut the rider off from their surroundings. A horn, a siren, or an approaching vehicle must remain audible. ANC in the C5 is therefore less comparable to an acoustic light switch than to an intelligent filter: the disruptive constant droning is reduced, while relevant information is preserved.

Schuberth and Cardo: Cooperation Becomes Integration

The C5 ANC demonstrates how close the collaboration between Schuberth and Cardo has become. Schuberth contributes decades of experience in helmet shells, aerodynamics, wind tunnel development, and aeroacoustics. Cardo supplies communication, mesh, microphone, and audio technology, as well as the know-how for active noise cancellation.

The SC Edge ANC is based on the technology of the Cardo Packtalk Edge, or the regular Schuberth SC Edge, respectively. It offers second-generation Dynamic Mesh Communication, Bluetooth 5.2, voice control, over-the-air updates, and, according to the manufacturer, a range of up to 1.6 kilometers under ideal conditions. The system is exclusively designed for the C5 ANC.

This cooperation goes considerably further than the usual principle of "helmet manufacturer creates mounting space for a third-party communication system." In the C5 ANC, the components involved were jointly tuned to one another. Speaker position, microphones, insulation, interior padding, software, and aerodynamics must all work together for the noise cancellation to function.

This starts right with the fit. If a helmet sits too loosely or air gets in uncontrolled through the neck area, turbulence arises that can push even a good ANC system to its limits. A clean, passive seal therefore remains the foundation. Only on top of that does the electronics come into play.

A Visit to the Cardo Sound Labs Explains a Lot

I was able to experience firsthand how seriously Cardo takes the topic of acoustics during my visit to the Cardo Sound Labs in Straubing, Bavaria. There, they don't just stick any old speaker into a helmet shell and then twist the bass dial on an equalizer until it sounds halfway impressive.

The developers work with custom-made measuring heads, specially positioned microphones, individual test setups, and simulated wind. In some cases, tools and test arrangements are only created during the development process, because existing measurement technology doesn't adequately capture the specific conditions inside a motorcycle helmet.

What stood out in particular there was the hands-on mentality. The team consists of genuine sound tinkerers who examine even the smallest details. The position, distance, and angle of a speaker inside the helmet can cause a significantly bigger difference than you might initially assume. After all, every head is different, every ear canal sits slightly differently, and just a few millimeters change the perceived sound.

The 53-millimeter speakers in the C5 ANC are the most visible result of this work. They are noticeably larger than many classic helmet speakers and must generate sufficient sound pressure to reproduce music and speech cleanly, as well as to produce the counter-sound required for ANC.

This creates a pleasant side effect: the C5 ANC doesn't just reduce disruptive wind noise, but simultaneously creates better conditions for good sound. Music no longer has to fight against the low-frequency droning at maximum volume. Navigation and intercom conversations remain more intelligible without having to permanently crank the speakers up to full volume.

Less Noise Means More Than Just More Comfort

When it comes to helmet noise, people like to talk about comfort. However, that falls short. Lower noise exposure is also a matter of health.

The University of Southampton has been studying the acoustics of motorcycle helmets and the effects of wind noise on hearing, perception, and cognitive performance for years. Studies show that motorcycle helmets partially attenuate high frequencies, but can actually amplify certain frequencies below 500 hertz. It's precisely in this low range that the droning many riders find particularly fatiguing after long highway stretches occurs.

One published study found that even a 30-minute motorcycle ride can cause a temporary shift in hearing threshold of more than 15 decibels. Put simply, this means that hearing temporarily becomes less sensitive after the ride – a warning sign of relevant acoustic stress.

International health and occupational safety organizations also set the threshold for potentially harmful continuous exposure low. The American National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health already recommends limiting exposure to eight hours at an average level of 85 dB. With every increase of 3 dB, the recommended exposure duration is halved. At 88 dB, that would be four hours; at 91 dB, only two hours; and at 100 dB, less than 15 minutes.

The World Health Organization also emphasizes that it's not just volume that matters, but the combination of level, duration, and frequency. Repeated or prolonged exposure can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once damaged, structures of the inner ear cannot simply regenerate.

Less Acoustic Stress, More Concentration

The health benefit isn't limited to hearing. Permanent, broadband noise places a strain on the brain. Even if we seemingly no longer consciously perceive the noise after a while, our nervous system still has to process it.

This explains why riders are often more exhausted after long, fast stretches than the physical exertion alone would suggest. The constant droning increases stress, makes communication and navigation more difficult, and can lead to turning music or announcements up even louder. This creates an unfavorable spiral: more outside noise leads to higher playback volume, and thus to even more strain.

This is probably where the C5 ANC's greatest practical advantage lies. It's not about opening a library inside the helmet. It's about reducing the particularly fatiguing noise components. The rider has to "work against" the noise acoustically less, can understand cues more easily, and may get off the bike feeling more relaxed after several hours.

Less fatigue can also indirectly improve riding safety. Anyone who is more physically and mentally rested can concentrate for longer and tends to react more attentively. However, this connection shouldn't be confused with a guaranteed safety gain. ANC replaces neither breaks nor hearing protection, a properly fitting helmet size, or sensible trip planning.

How Strong Is the ANC Effect Really?

Anyone expecting the wind noise to be virtually eliminated, as with modern in-ear headphones on an airplane, is likely to be disappointed. The conditions inside a helmet are considerably more difficult. The system is meant to control the noise, not eliminate it.

Schuberth speaks of a reduction in disruptive noise of up to roughly 10 to 12 dB, with the effect depending on speed, bike, windshield, riding position, fit, and frequency. The system is said to be particularly effective in the low and mid frequency range.

That said, decibel figures need to be handled with care. The scale is logarithmic. A 10 dB reduction is often subjectively perceived as roughly halving the loudness, but this isn't a universally identical experience. Furthermore, the manufacturer's figure represents a maximum value under certain conditions, not a guaranteed reduction in every riding situation.

The bigger difference may therefore show up less as a spectacular before-and-after moment than after three or four hours of riding. Precisely at the point when you notice that your head is buzzing less, the music could run quieter, and you don't feel like you've just come out of a machine hall when you stop for fuel.

53-Millimeter Sound: The Secret Star of the System?

Active Noise Cancelling naturally draws the most attention. But the 53-millimeter speakers could be almost equally relevant in everyday use.

Large drivers don't automatically guarantee good sound. However, they can move more air and, with appropriate tuning, enable a stronger bass range as well as better dynamics. This brings advantages particularly in a motorcycle helmet, where the available space is limited and outside noise overlays large parts of the frequency spectrum.

Then there's the combination with ANC. When the low-frequency wind droning is reduced, the speaker no longer needs to mask this frequency range with excessive volume. Speech can sound clearer, music gains structure, and even the bass gets a chance to be perceived as bass – not merely as additional buzzing between engine, tires, and wind noise.

This point matches exactly with my impressions from the Cardo Sound Labs. It became very clear there that good helmet sound doesn't come from a well-known logo on the speaker. What's decisive is tuning the entire system to the actual position inside the helmet and to the acoustic conditions of motorcycle riding.

Operation and Everyday Use: High-Tech with Small Stumbling Blocks

As impressive as the technology is, the system isn't entirely free of criticism. According to the user reports evaluated, the SC Edge ANC doesn't reliably remember the activated ANC mode after switching off, or rather, it starts up with noise cancellation deactivated every time it's switched on. The rider therefore has to reactivate ANC again via button, app, or voice command.

For a product in this price range, that seems unnecessarily cumbersome. Especially on a trip with several fuel, photo, and coffee stops, you don't want to have to remember to switch a central function back on every time. A saveable default setting or a corresponding software update would be desirable.

Installing the battery module also requires attention. While the system is fundamentally integrated cleanly into the helmet, housing the components and cables is more complex than with a simple, externally mounted universal intercom. Anyone who doesn't enjoy handling interior padding, connectors, and small cables should have the initial installation done by a dealer.

Another point is the possible feeling of pressure immediately after activation. Some users of ANC headphones are familiar with this phenomenon: although air pressure doesn't physically change, the reduction of low frequencies can initially feel like slight pressure on the ears. At high speeds, the brain expects a certain acoustic feedback and first has to get used to the quieter soundscape. For many people, this feeling disappears after a short adjustment period.

The Price: 1,328 Euros Sounds More Brutal Than the ANC Surcharge Actually Is

Let's get to the elephant in the garage. According to the manufacturer's shop, the Schuberth C5 ANC costs 799 euros. The mandatory SC Edge ANC adds another 529 euros. The complete package thus comes to 1,328 euros.

That is, without question, a lot of money for a helmet plus communication system. However, the fair basis for comparison isn't a bare-bones mid-range helmet, but a normal Schuberth C5 with a technically comparable communication system.

The regular C5 is offered from around 699 euros, depending on color and version. The normal SC Edge costs 369 euros. That means a comparable C5-SC-Edge combination comes to at least 1,068 euros. The effective surcharge for the ANC solution is thus around 260 euros:

  • C5 from 699 euros plus SC Edge for 369 euros: from 1,068 euros
  • C5 ANC for 799 euros plus SC Edge ANC for 529 euros: 1,328 euros
  • effective ANC surcharge: around 260 euros

If you compare specific C5 finishes at the same price point, or calculate based on the 799-euro version of the normal C5 currently shown in the Schuberth shop, the gap can even turn out smaller. That's why one shouldn't broadly claim that ANC costs more than a 1,300-euro surcharge. The complete premium system costs more than 1,300 euros. The actual surcharge compared to a normal, fully equipped C5 is more in the range of a few hundred euros.

This makes the discussion more interesting. 260 euros is still no small change. For high-mileage riders, touring riders, and commuters who would already buy a C5 with a high-quality mesh system, the ANC surcharge, however, seems considerably more reasonable than the intimidating total sum might initially suggest. Anyone who only occasionally rides to the ice cream parlor on Sundays and doesn't need a communication system will find it hard to justify the benefit. Anyone who rides several tens of thousands of kilometers per year, covers long highway stretches, and places great value on communication and music, on the other hand, is investing the surcharge in a feature that pays off on every longer ride.

Does the C5 ANC Replace Earplugs?

This question can't be answered with a simple yes across the board. ANC and hearing protection work according to different principles.

Earplugs passively reduce sound levels across a broad frequency range and function independently of battery, software, or electronics. High-quality, individually fitted custom earpieces therefore remain an excellent solution for high-mileage riders.

ANC, on the other hand, targets specific frequencies and can reduce the subjectively particularly stressful bass component. At the same time, it offers advantages for music, communication, and navigation. In return, it depends on a power supply, correct fit, and functioning electronics.

In theory, ANC and earplugs can also be combined. However, it's important that music and intercom are then not set unnecessarily loud again. The greatest benefit doesn't come from immediately filling the newfound quiet with more volume.

Conclusion: The C5 ANC Is No Bargain – But Technically Consistent

The Schuberth C5 ANC is not a helmet for bargain hunters, nor is it a revolution after which absolute silence suddenly reigns under the helmet at 160 km/h. Rather, it is a technically consistent further development of an established premium flip-up helmet.

The base remains the C5 with its touring orientation, P/J homologation, integrated sun visor, and adjustable interior. The decisive difference is made by the microphones developed together with Cardo, the 53-millimeter speakers, and the SC Edge ANC.

Particularly convincing is the approach of not indiscriminately blocking out all sounds, but primarily reducing the low, fatiguing wind droning. This preserves the perception of relevant traffic signals while simultaneously improving the conditions for music, navigation, and communication.

The health aspect shouldn't be viewed as a mere marketing add-on. High sound levels can permanently damage hearing, and even short motorcycle rides can cause measurable temporary changes in the hearing threshold. Any effective reduction in exposure is therefore fundamentally welcome.

The total price of 1,328 euros remains high at first glance. Compared to a normal C5 with SC Edge, however, things become more relative: the actual surcharge for the ANC technology is around 260 euros, depending on color, finish, and the current C5 price.

For the classic Sunday rider, this remains a luxury – one that can certainly still be indulged in, though. For those who rack up serious mileage, tourers, commuters, and all those who already want to invest in a premium flip-up helmet with mesh communication, however, this luxury could offer real added value – not just for comfort, but possibly also for long-term health.

Who is the Schuberth C5 ANC worth it for? For touring riders, commuters, and high-mileage riders who regularly cover long stretches, already use a high-quality communication system, and perceive wind noise as a significant burden.

Who is it less worth it for? For occasional riders, short-distance pilots, and motorcyclists who need neither music nor intercom and are satisfied with a well-fitting helmet plus earplugs.
