The BMW C 400 scooters have been on the market for nearly a decade now. During this time, they haven't been reinvented but have seen consistent refinements. No revolutions, no major overhauls, just a series of small, impactful improvements. And yet—or perhaps because of this—they remain among the best-selling scooters on the market. In 2025, the BMW C 400 GT ranked 10th among the top-selling scooters over 125cc in Germany, while the C 400 X came in at 16th. So, why do these combustion-engine scooters continue to perform so well even in an era of increasing electrification?

Two Characters, One Technical Foundation

BMW offers two distinct interpretations of the same concept with the C 400 X and C 400 GT. Technically, both are closely related: a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with 350cc, delivering 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm at 5,750 rpm powers both models. They feature a classic CVT transmission with belt drive. The scooters are also on par when it comes to rider aids, boasting cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, and ride-by-wire technology.

The difference lies less in the bare technology and more in the character. The C 400 GT is the luxury, comfort-oriented maxi-scooter of the lineup, while the C 400 X presents itself as more compact, cheeky, and urban. BMW has sensibly priced the two models: the BMW C 400 X starts at around 7,000 Euros in Germany, and the BMW C 400 GT at around 8,000 Euros. As is often the case with BMW, adding options can quickly increase the price, but in return, you get a very cohesive and high-quality package.

BMW C 400 GT: More Comfort, More Storage, More Scooter for Every Day

For the latest 2025 model update, BMW has made thoughtful enhancements to the GT. The most significant update focuses on a crucial area for any scooter: storage. There's now an additional 12 liters available. The under-seat compartment has been modified, and the well-known BMW Flexcase remains. This feature allows the helmet compartment to be expanded while stationary to accommodate a full-face helmet. However, the Flexcase must be folded back in during riding.

BMW has also made improvements at the front. The two glove compartments are lockable and automatically secure themselves electrically when the key is out of range. The right compartment holds 4.5 liters, enough for a 0.5-liter bottle, while the left provides 2.7 liters. Additionally, an optional 43.5-liter top case is available, turning the GT into a true everyday expert. A particularly nice touch: the top case is equipped with lighting and a USB-C socket—an actual plus for daily use or longer trips.

The GT also showcases its strengths in terms of ergonomics. The footboards are generously sized, allowing you to comfortably stretch your legs forward—a feature not every maxi-scooter in this class handles as well. With a seat height of 765 mm, the GT remains accessible. BMW has adjusted the seat for 2025 to make ground contact easier. Additionally, there's a new adjustable windshield that can be conveniently adjusted via a lever. The difference in wind protection is noticeably significant. While it doesn't completely eliminate turbulence at the helmet, the increase in comfort is evident and highly relevant for everyday riding.

The BMW C 400 GT is not only a commuter vehicle but also a scooter designed for longer journeys and rides with a passenger. This is evident from its more generous passenger footrests and its overall larger build. Especially with the addition of a top case, it provides enhanced rear security and comfort. So, for those who frequently travel two-up, the GT clearly offers the more suitable package.

Riding Impression BMW C 400 GT: Confident Over Spectacular

On the road, the GT confirms what is already apparent when stationary. It's not a jittery city flea but a calm, confident, and mature maxi-scooter. Weighing in at 219 kilograms ready to ride, it does carry a certain heft, noticeable when maneuvering or filtering through tight traffic. However, this size disadvantage becomes an advantage on country roads and highways.

With its 34 hp and a top speed of 129 km/h, the C 400 GT is well-equipped to cruise comfortably on expressways and highways. Particularly noteworthy is the low level of vibrations and noise. Even at higher speeds, the BMW never feels strained. You can sense that there's a limit to its thrust, but you don't hear or feel the scooter struggling. This refined demeanor perfectly aligns with the GT's character.

BMW C 400 X: The More Compact, Edgier BMW Scooter

The C 400 X takes a different approach. It can be described as the bolder, more rugged variant. Visually, it appears more compact, angular, and urban. The front fairing is less expansive, giving it an overall lighter and more agile presence. For 2025, the front of the X has been revamped without losing the distinctive C 400 X character.

There has also been a storage update, albeit on a smaller scale. There are now 3 more liters available under the seat. The Flexcase is also present here, allowing for increased storage when stationary. However, in direct comparison with the GT, it's quickly noticeable that the X is simply more compact and therefore offers less storage space. The front glove compartments also remain smaller. While they're sufficient for a smartphone and small items, larger everyday objects are less comfortably accommodated.

The ergonomics follow a similar trend. The footboard space is sufficient for average-sized feet, but you can't stretch out as comfortably as you can on the GT. The passenger foot pegs are also more compact. Consequently, the X is less of a touring scooter and more optimized for urban commuting.

This is where the X really plays its cards. With its more compact dimensions and a lighter weight of 208 kilograms ready to ride, it feels lighter, more maneuverable, and accessible in city traffic. It instills greater confidence when weaving through traffic, maneuvering, and navigating congested areas. This is precisely where the X is in its element.

However, once you hit the open road or highway, the downside becomes apparent. The wind protection is noticeably less. The windshield is small and non-adjustable, and the fairing offers less protection from wind and weather. While the engine is just as refined as in the GT, the overall setup is clearly more geared towards urban use.

The answer is quite simple: BMW understands what its customers expect from a scooter. The C 400 X and C 400 GT feel premium, well-thought-out, and mature. They don't come across as cheap, arbitrary, or purely utilitarian. Instead, they deliver the exact premium feel that many buyers seek from BMW.

Additionally, BMW offers genuine variety within the C 400 family.
