Nestled in the historic surroundings of Modena, not far from Bologna, emerges a product that nearly obliterates the boundaries between racing and the road. Now in its fourth generation, the Superleggera remains true to its promise: it is the brand's uncompromising flagship. Although it visually resembles the well-known Ducati Panigale V4, nearly every detail has been re-engineered or completely reimagined. Particularly striking is the extensive use of carbon fiber, even in areas previously considered almost untouchable in production motorcycle construction.

With a strictly limited run of only 500 units worldwide, the Superleggera remains an exclusive collector's piece. At the same time, it is fully homologated for road use—a fact that makes its technical prowess even more remarkable.

Since the Superleggera 1199, not only have 12 years passed, but the technology has also made great leaps over the course of the two Superleggera generations since then.

Up to 247 HP! - The Engine of the Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario

The heart of the Superleggera draws from the racing DNA of the Panigale V4R, but it has been specifically enhanced to deliver maximum performance both on the road and the track. While the Superbike World Championship imposes a displacement limit of 1,000 cubic centimeters, Ducati leverages the freedom of a motorcycle not bound by regulations, increasing the displacement to 1,103 cubic centimeters.

This expansion is achieved through an increased stroke, which directly results in enhanced torque. Particularly in the lower and mid-range RPMs, the bike benefits from significantly more pulling power. The standard configuration delivers an impressive 228 HP, which can be boosted to a staggering 247 HP in the optional Race configuration with a racing exhaust system. With the increased displacement, not only is there ample peak power available, but also the torque, which is even more crucial for road use. This is not the top priority for the V4R, which is primarily built for the racetrack and from which the base engine is derived.

More power, less weight! Sounds simple, but at the level of a Superleggera, it demands the optimization of every single component, no matter how small.

But the pure power increase is just part of the story. Ducati's focus on weight reduction within the engine is evident. Titanium valves in the intake area, numerous titanium bolts, and a specially optimized crankshaft significantly reduce the overall weight and rotating masses. Not only is the latter lighter, but it is also aerodynamically optimized to minimize drag in the oil bath. This is further complemented by the use of tungsten weights, which create mass centralization.

In total, the engine is lightened by approximately 3.6 kilograms compared to the Panigale, with 1.1 kilograms shed solely from the crankshaft.

In Ducati's racing gearbox, which is also installed in the Superleggera V4 Centenario, the neutral gear is positioned below the first gear.

Naturally, the Superleggera is equipped with the new racing gearbox. Here, the neutral is not positioned as usual between the first and second gear but is instead "hidden" below the first gear. This means you don't have to shift through neutral when going from first to second gear, allowing for a shorter and more precise gear change. To prevent accidentally hitting neutral during quick downshifts in cornering battles, a neutral lock can be activated from the handlebar.

Barely Recognizable as a Frame - Chassis of the Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario

The chassis clearly demonstrates how significantly MotoGP insights have influenced development. While maximum rigidity was once the ultimate goal, Ducati now deliberately focuses on controlled flex behavior to enhance cornering capability.

The frame of the Superleggera hardly resembles a traditional frame. Rather, it is an extremely compact, monocoque-like structure made of carbon that only connects the engine to the steering head. By precisely adjusting the material layers, Ducati achieves precise definition of both torsional and longitudinal stiffness while saving about 20% of the weight.

The elaborate monocoque frame is made of carbon from the steering head to the tail, as are the swingarm, brakes, forks, and rims of the Superleggera.

The swingarm is also entirely made of carbon—a component rarely found in this form in production builds. Its hollow structure requires a highly complex manufacturing process, which involves the use of inflatable bladders. Additionally, Ducati integrates a QR code directly into the structure, allowing for seamless traceability of each individual component.

The rear frame also adheres to the lightweight principle and is designed as a self-supporting carbon element. Overall, the chassis significantly contributes to further reducing the motorcycle's overall weight while simultaneously optimizing ride dynamics.

First Carbon Fork in a Production Motorcycle - Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario

In the area of suspension, Ducati collaborates closely with Öhlins, utilizing components that come directly from racing. The front fork is one of the most significant technical highlights.

For the first time, the NPX25/30 fork features outer tubes made of carbon—an innovation that has not existed in production motorcycle construction until now. Since carbon is sensitive to localized stress, a hybrid solution had to be developed. At particularly stressed points, such as at the clamping areas, aluminum inlays are used to ensure the necessary stability when clamping in the triple clamps.

The Öhlins NPX25/30 fork, with its carbon outer tubes, is a world-first in the realm of production motorcycles.

High-quality racing components are also used inside the fork, including a closed-cartridge system that guarantees maximum performance. The fork's construction alone achieves a weight saving of up to one kilogram.

The rear TTX shock is also based on a specially developed lightweight version, contributing further to the reduction of unsprung mass. Combined with the carbon wheels, this results in a suspension setup that responds extremely agilely and is designed to enable precise steering behavior.

Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario with Carbon Brakes Despite Street-Legal Status

Ducati, together with Brembo, is writing another revolutionary chapter in brake technology. While carbon brake discs have long been established in racing, they were previously considered unsuitable for road use because they only reached their full performance at high temperatures.

The solution lies in a newly developed carbon-ceramic compound that ensures reliable braking performance even at low temperatures. For the first time, this combines the advantages of carbon brakes, such as low weight and high durability, with the demands of road use. The low weight of carbon also allows for an upgrade to delay-friendly large diameters of 340mm and 8mm wall thickness.

Until now, carbon brakes were considered unusable for public road traffic. With the Superleggera V4 Centenario, that changes.

The brake discs not only offer outstanding deceleration performance but also significantly reduce the rotating mass at the front wheel. This directly impacts the bike's agility and handling. What is "state of the art" in racing has now made its debut in road vehicle construction for the first time.

New Superleggera V4 Naturally Comes with Carbon Wheels

What might already be considered "ordinary" is the use of carbon technology in the wheels. These high-end parts have long been available as aftermarket options for some motorcycles, but rarely with homologation or street approval. Carbon is particularly sensitive to shock loads, which can quickly become dangerous in the wheel area during tough road use. Therefore, many rigorous tests and very precise manufacturing specifications had to be met to fulfill these requirements. However, through intensive collaboration with the company BST, this challenge has also been overcome.

Amidst all the high-tech excellence in the Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario, the exquisite carbon wheels from BST almost go unnoticed.

The Superleggera V4 Centenario is a reservoir of technological innovations. Particularly noteworthy is the consistent use of carbon in nearly all areas of the motorcycle—from the frame and swingarm to the forks and wheels.

Equally impressive is the level of detail Ducati applies to weight optimization. Every component is scrutinized, every gram saved, without compromising stability or safety.

That the Ducati Superleggera, with its brute power and racing technology, has achieved street-legal status is a sensation in itself.

Another highlight is the combination of extreme performance and full road legality. Despite its proximity to racing, the Superleggera remains a motorcycle that can be legally ridden on public roads. This is a balancing act that few manufacturers manage in this form.

With a price of around 150,000 euros and a strict limitation to 500 units, this motorcycle targets a very exclusive audience and will likely be out of reach for most of us. Nevertheless, it serves an important role: It demonstrates what is technically possible when economic constraints take a back seat.

The Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario is the most consistent attempt yet to bring MotoGP technology to the street. It combines extreme performance, radical lightweight construction, and innovative materials into a package that is unparalleled.

Of course, it remains a niche product—very exclusive, too expensive, and too uncompromising for the everyday rider. Yet that's precisely where its allure lies. It's not a motorcycle for everyone but a symbol of what is currently technically achievable and a glimpse of what we might find in future production supersport bikes in a toned-down version.
