Harley-Davidson Street Glide and Road Glide Limited with VVT

Two Baggers, One Mission: Conquer the Road – No Matter What.

Both models are part of the Grand American Touring family, specifically targeting riders who value comfort, smoothness, and commanding power delivery on long journeys. While luxury plays a role, it's not prioritized over functionality. It's all about how relaxed you can continue riding after hours in the saddle.

Early in the year, when many bikes are still awaiting the start of the season, Harley-Davidson invited us to Málaga. Sun, cool mornings, wet asphalt, wind – precisely the conditions where a true touring bike has to prove itself. No fair-weather run, but a real-world test.

Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117 Engine

Variable Valve Timing Now Available in Limited Models

At the heart of both Grand American Touring Limited models is the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117. With 1,923 cc, 109 hp, and 175 Nm, Harley-Davidson remains deliberately conservative with the raw numbers. The key difference isn't in peak performance but in the variable valve timing, making its debut in the Limited Touring models.

The result is a smoother, more balanced power delivery across the entire rev range—particularly noticeable when cruising lazily, overtaking with a full load, or gliding effortlessly down the highway.

Additionally, the revamped cylinder head cooling system ensures better thermal stability, especially at low speeds and high temperatures. Despite the top case, full touring gear, and hefty weight, the standard fuel consumption remains at 5.9 liters/100 kilometers, consistent with previous models without VVT.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited

Road Glide Limited 2026: Pure Long-Distance Touring

The Road Glide Limited is distinctly positioned as a classic long-distance tourer. It prioritizes maximum stability, tranquility, and efficiency over sportiness—especially catering to riders who spend a lot of time on the road and often ride two-up.

Both visually and technically, the frame-mounted Sharknose fairing is a defining feature. It decouples the fairing's weight from the steering, providing noticeably greater stability at higher speeds. On highway stretches or in sweeping curves, the Road Glide remains extremely composed, almost stoic. Its aerodynamics have been further optimized in the wind tunnel, enhancing both wind protection and fuel efficiency.

A standout feature is the new Grand Tour Pack. The top case offers 68 liters of capacity, integrated speakers, a passenger backrest, luggage rack, 12-volt power supply, and a seamlessly integrated LED light. Together with the saddlebags, there's a total of 144 liters of storage, without the bike feeling sluggish in its handling dynamics.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited

With a seat height of 740 mm, a wheelbase of 1,625 mm, and a 22.7-liter fuel tank, the Road Glide is clearly designed for range and comfort. The ready-to-ride weight of 417 kg demands attention and some muscle when maneuvering—there's no reverse gear. However, once in motion, the weight quickly becomes less of an issue.

The Showa suspension is firmly tuned for comfort and stability. It handles bumps with ease, particularly excelling on rough roads or long stretches. At the rear, Showa emulsion shocks are used, with preload adjustments that can be made hydraulically and without tools. While the fork isn't adjustable, it's well-matched to the rear, delivering a cohesive, balanced overall feel without nervousness or bottoming out. With a maximum lean angle of about 31 degrees, the Road Glide Limited corners better than its appearance and weight might suggest—while not sporty, it's predictable and stable.

The ergonomics are clearly geared for touring: a wide, tall handlebar, relaxed knee angle, and generous floorboards. Heated grips, heated rider and passenger seats, and standard highway pegs emphasize its long-distance credentials. The large TFT touchscreen display with Skyline OS is easy to read and feels very spacious due to its forward positioning. The controls are logical, though extensive—there simply wasn't enough time for a brief test to explore every submenu in detail.

Acoustically, the Road Glide Limited is understated. It remains unobtrusive at a standstill, delivering a deep, pleasant V-twin sound while riding. Present, yet never intrusive, perfectly matching the bike's character.

Overall, the Road Glide Limited rides smoothly, stably, and with confidence. The brakes are strong and well-modulated, and the saddlebags and top case have little negative impact on handling. It impresses less with emotion and more with its authority.

The Road Glide Limited is available in seven different colors and with either silver or black engine finishes. The MSRP starts at €35,600 in Germany, €42,900 in Austria, and CHF 33,900 in Switzerland.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Limited

Street Glide Limited 2026: The More Agile Sibling

The Street Glide Limited remains true to the classic touring spirit but offers a slightly different riding experience. The main difference from the Road Glide is the fork-mounted Batwing fairing and the lower, sportier handlebar.

Technically, the Street Glide Limited is nearly identical: same engine, same performance figures, same suspension, same electronics, same fuel consumption. The new Grand Tour Pack with a total of 144 liters of storage is also featured here.

With a seat height of 740 mm and identical geometry, it also offers a relaxed seating position and secure footing. The ready-to-ride weight is 405 kg—about 12 kilograms less than the Road Glide Limited. This difference may seem small on paper, but it is quite noticeable in real-world riding.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Limited

The Batwing fairing makes the Street Glide's handling feel more direct, especially at low speeds and through alternating curves. The cockpit is positioned closer to the rider, the handlebars provide more feedback, and the whole motorcycle feels slightly more compact.

The engine behaves identically: strong pull from low revs, smooth throttle response, with no aggressive edge. The Showa suspension also offers plenty of comfort here. Thanks to the hydraulic preload adjustment, up to 45 kg more luggage or a passenger can be accommodated without needing tools for adjustment or removing the saddlebags.

Available in seven colors and two engine finishes, the Street Glide Limited is priced similarly to the Road Glide Limited, starting at €35,600 in Germany, €42,900 in Austria, and CHF 33,900 in Switzerland.

Conclusion from Málaga – With Light and Shadow

The test day in Málaga was overall fantastic, although the weather wasn't perfect—which is exactly what a genuine touring test requires. Both the Road Glide Limited and the Street Glide Limited impressed with their high level of authority, stability, and an impressively relaxed ride on long stretches and dry roads. Engine, suspension, ergonomics, and assistive systems work together harmoniously as a comprehensive package, exactly as expected from Grand American Touring.

The Road Glide Limited is clearly aimed at riders seeking maximum tranquility, stability, and long-distance comfort. For those who clock many highway miles, often ride two-up, and value a supremely confident and calm riding experience, this is the most consistent tourer in comparison. It especially shines at higher speeds, on long straightaways, and in wide curves. Yet, even when maneuvering at a standstill, making turns, or in very slow and tight corners, the Road Glide feels very manageable and light on the handlebars, as only the fork and front wheel need to be turned.

Harley-Davidson Road and Street Glide Limited

The Street Glide Limited, on the other hand, appeals to riders who appreciate comfort along with a more direct, subjectively agile riding experience. With its fork-mounted Batwing fairing, lower handlebars, and lighter weight, it feels more compact and playful—especially on winding country roads and at moderate speeds. It's the better compromise for those who want to cover long distances without sacrificing a more classic motorcycle feel.

However, a critical point is the heat buildup of both models when stationary. A noticeable amount of heat accumulates around the lower legs—enough that you need to be mindful not to get burned. This is particularly uncomfortable in city traffic or when maneuvering, and it could be an issue for more sensitive riders.

Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series Bias Tires

Tires as a Weakness in the Touring Concept

The biggest genuine criticism of both Limited models is the stock tires. The Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series bias tires displayed two very different characteristics during testing.

In dry conditions in the afternoon, the bias tires performed significantly better than expected. Even on the rather poor, storm-debris-covered roads around Málaga, they offered decent grip, plenty of stability, and allowed for surprisingly sporty riding.

However, in rain and cooler temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, the picture changed drastically. Traction, feedback, and a sense of safety dropped sharply—confidence was hard to come by. For touring riders who travel in all weather conditions or regions with such climates, this is a clear weakness.

Whether this is an inherent wet-weather weakness of the Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series or an unfavorable combination with the rain-soaked, bitumen-rich roads around Málaga is unclear. The fact remains: the stock tires are a point of criticism that should be acknowledged—and possibly optimized before embarking on a major journey.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited FLTRXL 2026 - Experiences and Expert Review

nopain

The Road Glide Limited 2026 epitomizes a confident long-distance tourer. Its character is not geared towards dynamics but focuses on calmness, stability, and efficiency over many miles. The frame-mounted Sharknose fairing ensures very neutral handling, especially at higher speeds. On highway stretches, it remains stoic, and in sweeping curves, it feels planted and predictable. Furthermore, it is exceptionally manageable and light on the handlebars when maneuvering at a standstill, making turns, or in very slow and tight corners, as only the fork and front wheel need to be turned. The new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117 impresses more with its even power delivery than with peak performance. The variable valve timing system particularly excels during lazy cruising or when fully loaded. The Showa suspension is clearly tuned for comfort. It absorbs bumps smoothly, and even rough asphalt sections lose their intimidation. Despite its 417 kg ready-to-ride weight, it feels surprisingly light once in motion—though it demands respect when maneuvering. With 144 liters of storage, heated components, and well-thought-out ergonomics, the Road Glide Limited is a motorcycle for riders who take long-distance seriously. Emotionally reserved, functionally strong—sovereignty over show.

With its fork-mounted Batwing fairing and lower handlebars, it feels more direct, compact, and agile at moderate speeds. With about 12 kilograms less weight than the Road Glide Limited, it only has a slight advantage on paper—but this difference is noticeable in real-world riding. It offers more feedback and a more active riding experience, especially in twisties and during quick transitions. Engine, suspension, electronics, and storage are identical to its sibling model. Here too, the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117 delivers strong, consistent pull without aggressive peaks.
