Four Boxers, Four Personalities – GS Comparison

Four BMW GS Models Head-to-Head – NastyNils takes on twisty mountain roads, gravel, and highways to analyze just how different the R 12 G/S, R 1250 GS, R 1300 GS, and Adventure truly are.

Four boxers, four stories – and a surprising conclusion. In the first three weeks of January, I had the rare opportunity to thoroughly ride all the current BMW boxer-enduros. From the stripped-down scrambler-retro charm of the R 12 G/S to the proven prowess of the R 1250 GS, and on to the high-tech assault of the R 1300 GS and its imposing counterpart, the R 1300 GS Adventure. A fireworks display of impressions that not only makes a test rider's heart race but also proves: these four models couldn't be more different – despite sharing the same DNA.

The New R 12 G/S: Emotion Over Reason

Sometimes, all it takes is a twist of the throttle to fall in love. With the R 12 G/S, it was that very moment: The finely-tuned, jerk-free throttle response makes you forget there's an air/oil-cooled boxer under there. The ride is lively, direct, and emotional – a scrambler with an enduro flair, built for the soul, not the spec sheet. With deliberately noticeable load changes, solid braking moments, and agile handling, it evokes memories of a time when motorcycling was gloriously irrational. Yet, as charming as it is on twisty roads, it's simply not cut out for long-distance touring. Wind protection? Minimal. Splash protection? Barely there. Luggage capability? A compromise. The R 12 G/S doesn’t aim to do it all – it aims to please. And it does so with flying colors.

Unit Garage - Customization Configurator for the R 12 G/S

Unit Garage is less a traditional accessory supplier and more an Italian workshop with a clear vision – and that's what makes their offerings for the BMW R 12 G/S so special. Founded by Fabio Marcaccini, a former Paris-Dakar rider, together with industrial designer Michiel Verstockt, this blend of genuine rally experience and design finesse shapes every product to this day. Motorcycles here aren't designed theoretically but from the perspective of those who ride them in the terrain. Near Riccione, painstakingly handcrafted small-batch components are created, always part of a comprehensive concept. This approach perfectly aligns with the R 12 G/S, which offers plenty of emotion straight from the factory but deliberately leaves room for customization. Unit Garage doesn't see it as an endpoint but as a foundation for an authentic retro-enduro. The range includes robust protection components like sturdy engine guards and large aluminum skid plates, functional off-road details like precise CNC-machined sidestand enlargers and headlight protectors, and one of the most consistent customizations on the market: a complete Öhlins 48 mm fork kit with custom triple clamps that fundamentally change the front-end dynamics. High-mounted exhaust systems, partly in collaboration with Akrapovič, are also part of the lineup, both visually and technically aimed straight at rally use. Another focus is on luggage solutions, ranging from lightweight TPU and canvas soft bags to classic leather cases and robust aluminum panniers, all designed with model-specific, slim carrier systems. The program is rounded out with carefully crafted CNC details, windshield extensions, and ergonomic refinements. The result isn't a haphazard collection of accessories but a cohesive whole – a BMW R 12 G/S with an Italian soul, technical integrity, and a clear stance.

The R 1250 GS: The Classic Remains a Benchmark

Switching from the R 12 G/S to the R 1250 GS feels like moving from a barstool to a living room. Everything fits, everything is just right, and the renowned ShiftCam engine delivers that unwavering punch both at low revs and higher speeds, which has already thrilled countless GS enthusiasts. In terms of comfort, equipment, and all-round capabilities, it remains a benchmark. Its electronic setup is comprehensive, though not the latest – it lacks the adaptive height adjustment found in the 1300 models. However, it scores with tremendous resale value and a matured character. It's not the sportiest, but the most familiar in the quartet. A motorcycle that carries its class with dignity. We've had the opportunity to try and test the R1250GS several times with Hispania Tours in Malaga. Our favorite base for a winter escape to southern Spain.

The R 1300 GS: High-Tech Meets Dynamism

BMW has taken a radical step with the R 1300 GS: The new frame, streamlined design, and further enhanced engine all come together seamlessly. The 1300 is markedly more dynamic than its predecessor, with more precise handling and more spectacular acceleration. It leans more toward a sport-tourer than an adventure-enduro, which might not appeal to everyone. Even returning riders find the 1300 more accessible and agile compared to the R1250GS. The technological leap is evident, particularly the electronic suspension with adaptive height adjustment, which is a real advantage. In tight corners, the bike feels more nimble than the 1250 – a result of consistent attention to detail.

However, both the R1300GS and the R1250GS lack the finesse in handling that the R12 G/S offers. The R12 G/S delivers more substantial feedback and caters to sporty riders who appreciate direct and hard feedback. Of course, the 1300 and 1250 have the advantage of electronic suspension, which can be adjusted at the push of a button to maintain balance under different load conditions. Yet, when everything is perfectly dialed in, you feel the road best with the 12 G/S!

Tracking and Safety - Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus

How much does a BMW R 1300 GS cost?
Here you will find an overview of the price level of new and used motorbikes!

For this tour, the Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus was my constant companion for two specific reasons. Firstly, it records my route seamlessly, providing the perfect foundation for future reportage: precise routes, elevation profiles, and traceable paths that I don't have to reconstruct from memory but can narrate based on data. Secondly, the safety aspect is crucial. Especially when off the grid, the inReach gives me peace of mind, knowing I can call for help via satellite if necessary. This combination of accurate tracking for journalistic work and genuine safety on the road makes the system extremely valuable for me during motorcycle travels.

Experience shows that the planned tour via Calimoto occasionally requires adjustments. In southern Spain, some north-facing slopes can be too cold to ride in January, resulting in icy patches in the mountains. Calimoto can't (yet) account for such conditions, necessitating a last-minute route change – the inReach ensures I always know exactly where I've been afterward.

The R 1300 GS Adventure: The Giant for the Long Haul

With the Adventure variant of the 1300 series, BMW showcases how far the concept of an adventure tourer can be taken. Massive, majestic, yet remarkably easy to handle on the move – that's the essence of the 1300 GS Adventure. Even when fully loaded with a passenger and luggage, it displays an impressive poise in tight turns and swift switchbacks. This motorcycle will take you to the ends of the earth – and beyond. Its destination is boundless, offering a level of comfort that's second to none. The design is polarizing, no doubt. But for those who prioritize function over form, this is the dream bike. The ultimate travel beast in the BMW lineup.

Shaft Drive and Trade-Offs

One critical point remains with all models: the shaft drive. What was once considered a maintenance-free blessing now requires regular care, especially with intensive off-road use. Moisture and dirt can quickly become problematic here. Professionals like Hispania Tours understand this and service the drive after every Morocco tour. For the average home user, this is a blow to ownership pride. There's still an air of superiority at BMW about shafts being better than chains – but that myth is showing cracks. As a BMW fan, you might now get some ribbing from your buddies at the local hangout. For years, you lectured them about how lousy chain maintenance was. Now, you're stuck with shaft drive upkeep and responsibility! Embarrassing!

Conclusion: The Choice is Tough – And That's a Good Thing

With these four models, BMW offers a unique range of boxer enduros. Each is a character study in itself, fulfilling its own purpose. The R 12 G/S delivers emotion and dynamism on shorter rides. The R 1250 GS stands as a proven all-rounder with high resale value. The R 1300 GS serves as the technological spearhead with a sporty edge. And the R 1300 GS Adventure represents the ultimate travel beast.

Technical Data Comparison - BMW GS Models

The technical differences between the BMW R 1300 GS, R 1250 GS, and R 12 G/S begin at the core of each machine—the boxer engine. The R 1300 GS sets a new performance benchmark with its new 1300cc ShiftCam boxer, delivering approximately 145 hp at 7750 rpm and around 149 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm, making it the most powerful of the three. Its shorter stroke and higher compression of 13.3:1 make the engine more rev-happy compared to the tried-and-tested 1254cc engine of the R 1250 GS, which produces 136 hp at the same rpm and 143 Nm at 6250 rpm. This engine has a slightly longer stroke, providing a stronger punch in the mid-range. The R 12 G/S, on the other hand, relies on classic air/oil cooling and a 1170cc unit delivering around 109 hp at 7000 rpm and 115 Nm at 6500 rpm. Its character is more traditional, with a simpler design and no ShiftCam technology. This technical spectrum spans from modern high-performance boxer motorization to the proven GS compromise and finally to a reduced, purist solution.

In terms of chassis and geometry, clear differentiations are evident. The R 1300 GS is based on a new platform with a revised EVO Telelever at the front and Paralever at the rear – along with 19- and 17-inch wheels for a distinctly road-oriented setup. It weighs about 12 kilograms less than the R 1250 GS and features more advanced assistance systems and an optional adaptive suspension with automatic height adjustment. The R 1250 GS continues to employ the classic Telelever and an electronics package with Dynamic ESA, remaining heavier—around 249 kilograms fully fueled—and more comfort-oriented. The R 12 G/S follows a completely different concept: with a 21-inch front wheel, optional 18-inch rear wheel in the Enduro Pro version, long suspension travel (210/200 mm), and a fully adjustable mechanical suspension. It forgoes modern electronics in favor of mechanical simplicity and off-road capability. The steel tube frame, increased ground clearance, and slimmer silhouette emphasize its off-road orientation. Thus, a clear technical profile emerges: from the high-tech adventure tourer to the proven tourer to the reduced retro enduro focusing on style and charm rather than comfort.

BMW R 1250 GS 2023 - Experiences and Expert Review

nastynils

The BMW R 1250 GS continues to stand out as a very complete motorcycle in 2022. Confident and well-balanced, it impresses on intensive rides. The bike scores with its splendid engine, excellent ergonomics, and practical riding aids, including great app integration. However, in direct comparison with other top-tier adventure bikes, it now shows some initial weaknesses in equipment and components. Nevertheless, the 136 HP from its boxer engine remains impressive in all situations.

Extremely torque-rich boxer engine

comfortable seating position, suitable for long distances

excellent app integration

refined control layout

great ergonomics

many customization options

superb handling with strong front-end confidence

easy rideability

Gear shifts are notchy at low RPMs

seat is too soft

brakes and suspension no longer match the level of strong competitors

BMW R 1300 GS 2025 - Experiences and Expert Review

nastynils

BMW has developed the new R 1300 GS with extensive experience and expertise, reflected in its advanced technology and versatility. The model appeals to both seasoned and new riders, offering an impressive combination of performance, comfort, and state-of-the-art equipment. It is a successful blend of compactness, power, and luxury, performing well both off-road and on the street. Unfortunately, the first series of the new 1300 GS is not yet fully refined in some areas, as indicated by several recalls and prone components.

Powerful engine with very sporty response

excellent traction

stable handling yet the motorcycle remains agile and corner-friendly

hand guards provide good wind protection

in minimal trim, the bike appears more compact and sportier than before

well-integrated radar cruise control

intuitive control layout

easily readable display

numerous ergonomic adjustment options

well-functioning and discreetly integrated emergency call system

very good balance under varying load conditions

The suspension performs well, but it lacks a truly flawless response and a wide adjustment range

Front Collision Warning (FCW) triggers annoying false alarms in everyday rough conditions

ABS system provides too much feedback in the brake lever during sporty riding

side panels are prone to scratches in rough terrain and when using rugged boots

on long two-up rides, the direct response of the powerful engine can be tiring.

The BMW R12 G/S is not a sensible GS, but an emotional one. It targets tall, experienced riders who value character, directness, and classic boxer feel over comfort, electronics, and practicality. Those who understand and can ride it will find a bike with genuine charisma and rare riding enjoyment – everyone else will not be satisfied.

Charismatic air/oil-cooled boxer engine

surprisingly comfortable seat

stable, sporty chassis on good roads

high-quality overall impression
