BMW Unveils the Next 1300 Model

The RS now gets the 1300 engine as well. But that's just the beginning of the upgrades. The RS becomes truly sporty, yet only appears visually more streamlined.

Concept and Positioning of the BMW R 1300 RS

With the new BMW R 1300 RS, BMW Motorrad presents the sportiest interpretation of a boxer model ever seen in the RS lineup. This fully-faired sport tourer has been thoroughly revamped both technically and visually. The goal was to achieve a sharper sporting focus without losing sight of touring capability. In practice, this means dynamic ride behavior, precise handling, state-of-the-art assistance systems, and long-distance comfort. With four model variants (Base, Triple Black, Performance, Option 719 Cuyamaca), it aims to appeal to a wide range of customers, from the sportingly ambitious solo rider to the travel-savvy duo with luggage.

BMW R 1300 RS – Design and Ergonomics

The sportily contoured fairing design instantly conveys agility. The LED twin headlights with separate high beam are part of a sleekly designed cockpit area. The daytime running light icons are intended to establish a visual signature for the brand. Targeted aerodynamic optimizations have increased the top speed to 246 km/h – no other boxer model is this fast.

Ergonomics have been clearly oriented towards a more active riding posture. The position of the handlebars, foot pegs, and seat results in a front-wheel-oriented riding position. The handlebars are 35 mm wider than the predecessor. The standard seat height is 790 mm, but there are five other options available, including a high sport seat (840 mm), comfort seat (820 mm), and low rider seat (760 mm). Several options are also available for the pillion, including a sports seat (only in the Performance version).

BMW R 1300 RS – Engine and Powertrain, Weight and Payload

The completely newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine with ShiftCam technology is familiar from the GS and boasts 1,300 cc displacement (bore 106.5 mm, stroke 73 mm). Maximum output is 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm, with peak torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The maximum revs reach 9,000 rpm. Power is transmitted via a wet clutch with ten friction plates, anti-hopping feature, and a six-speed gearbox. This is now positioned below the engine, reducing the overall length and weight. A total of 3.9 kg was saved on the base engine and 6.5 kg on the drivetrain. The shaft drive on the RS is also designed as a wear part.

Despite these savings and lighter wheels, the RS gains some weight compared to its predecessor, now weighing in at 245 kg with 90% fuel. The payload capacity in the base version without extras is 215 kg.

BMW R 1300 RS – Chassis and Suspension – Semi-Active Standard

The RS is built on a newly designed steel sheet main frame with an aluminum die-cast rear frame. Up front, it features a new upside-down telescopic fork with a 47 mm inner tube diameter and 140 mm of travel. For the first time in mass-produced motorcycles, this fork allows optional electronic adjustment of the spring rate. At the rear, an EVO Paralever swingarm with 130 mm of travel is employed. Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) comes as standard.

Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) is available as an option, allowing real-time tuning of damping, spring rate, and load compensation. The system adapts to the riding mode, road conditions, and load status. The Performance version features a special sport suspension with a longer fork, firmer damping, and a seat height raised by approximately 10 mm.

Changes have also been made to the wheels: a 190 rear tire replaces the previous 180, and about 700 grams of weight have been saved per wheel. Reduced rotating mass should benefit handling.

BMW R 1300 RS – Braking System and Rider Aids

Braking is handled by a dual disc setup at the front (310 mm, radially mounted four-piston fixed calipers) and a single disc at the rear (276 mm). Integral ABS Pro comes as standard. There is an optional sport brake with titanium-colored calipers. Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) helps prevent accidental throttle input during braking.

The RS features three riding modes (Rain, Road, Eco) as standard, with the optional "Riding Modes Pro" adding Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. The latter offers additional adjustment options, including DTC Shift for fine-tuning traction control. Engine drag torque control (MSR) and dynamic traction control (DTC) are also standard.

BMW R 1300 RS – Electronics and New Features

The RS comes equipped with the familiar 6.5-inch TFT display, featuring connectivity functions, arrow navigation, and music and phone control via the multi-controller. Two USB-C charging ports and a 12V socket are standard, as is the cruise control with braking function. The popular Headlight Pro, BMW's adaptive cornering light, is available as an option.

New and available for the first time in an RS is the automated shift assistant (ASA), which fully automates clutching and shifting. The rider can choose to ride manually or in automatic mode—completely without a clutch lever.

Also new are the enhanced features of the optional Riding Assistant:

  • ACC (Active Cruise Control): Radar-based distance control cruise control. Automatically maintains the selected distance to the vehicle ahead.
  • FCW (Front Collision Warning): Front collision warning. Alerts to rapid closing speeds and prepares the braking system for emergency braking.
  • SWW (Side Warning Warning): Monitors blind spots and warns of overlooked vehicles during lane changes.
  • RECW (Rear End Collision Warning): Detects potential rear-end collisions from approaching vehicles and activates a high-frequency hazard warning signal.

Additionally new is the electrically releasable navigation system mount, which no longer requires a mechanical key, and the new tank bag with magnetic quick-release attachment without straps. The Vario luggage system (cases and top case) is now fully electrified, with central locking and interior lighting.

BMW R 1300 RS – Pricing and Availability

For those already getting impatient, there's good news: The 1300 RS will be available at dealerships from the end of May. The base price in Germany is €16,590. You can find the most comprehensive list of prices for accessories and options in the BMW Configurator. For Austria, prices are available directly on the BMW website.
