The idea of routing the exhaust under the seat didn't happen overnight. The first manufacturers began experimenting in this direction back in the late 1990s. However, the concept only really became popular with the supersport boom of the early 2000s. Brands like Honda, Yamaha, Ducati and Triumph in particular embraced the underseat exhaust and turned it into a design feature of their sportiest production bikes. Inspired by racing, this design was seen as a step forward in terms of handling and looks - a symbol of power, control and modern style.

Underseat exhaust: From hype to nearly forgotten technology
Why the underseat exhaust arrived, shone - and disappeared
In the 2000s, it was the epitome of sporty bike aesthetics: the underseat exhaust. Mounted high, exiting directly under the pillion seat, it gave sporty machines an aggressive tail, a clean line - and was a statement for riders who wanted to stand out from the crowd. But today this design has almost vanished. What was once celebrated as a technical and visual step forward has become a rarity. Time for a look back - and an explanation of why this iconic trend disappeared into obscurity.

A brief look back: How it all began
Why the underseat exhaust was so popular
The appeal of the underseat exhaust came down to several factors. Above all, it was expected to improve mass centralization, which should have a direct effect on handling. A central, high-mounted exhaust shifts weight closer to the bike's centre of gravity - an advantage especially when leaning in quickly or changing direction. It also convinced people visually: the tail looked tidy, clean and extremely sporty. No bulky muffler disturbed the lines - instead, the bike almost seemed to float above the tarmac. For many riders, the underseat exhaust also had a practical advantage - in the event of a tip-over or extreme lean angle, the system was better protected than a side-mounted silencer.
Where the concept hit its limits
Despite these advantages, it became clear over time why the underseat exhaust couldn't remain a permanent solution. One of the biggest criticisms was the intense heat build-up directly under the seat. Especially in summer temperatures or in city traffic, the seat and pillion area became uncomfortably hot. In addition, the system took up valuable space under the seat - space that was urgently needed as electronics integration kept growing. At the latest with the strict Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissions standards, the underseat exhaust increasingly became a problem. Modern exhaust systems need large volumes for catalytic converters and complex exhaust gas recirculation. All of that is hard to fit under the seat without making compromises on heat, space or serviceability. Economic reasons also played a role: the construction was more elaborate, more expensive and technically more complex than conventional side exhausts.
Bikes that made the underseat exhaust legendary
Despite all the drawbacks, there were numerous bikes that shaped - and in some cases even turned into icons of - the underseat exhaust.
Aprilia
Aprilia set the style in the sporty naked bike and fun bike segment with the Shiver and Dorsoduro. Both models combined V2 engines with underseat twin-exhaust systems that underlined the striking Italian design:
- Aprilia Shiver 750 / 900
- Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 / 900 / 1200

Underseat siblings: Aprilia Dorsoduro and Shiver.
BMW
BMW used the underseat exhaust on several sporty models, for instance on the especially light HP2 Sport, on the sporty boxer variant R1200S, and on the R1100S, a forerunner in the sport touring segment with a single underseat muffler.
- HP2 Sport
- R1100S
- R1200S

Rare, refined, sought-after: the BMW HP2 Sport.
Ducati
Hardly any manufacturer stands for the iconic underseat twin-exhaust quite like Ducati. The legendary V2 sportbikes from the 748 to the 1098 wore this design like a signature. The 916 series in particular became world-famous through the design. But even the Hypermotard series still proudly sports high-mounted pipes to this day.
- 748 / 848 / 916 / 996 / 998 / 1098
- 999 / 1198
- Hypermotard 698 Mono / 796 / 950 / 1100

An iconic tail: the Ducati 916.
Honda
Honda used underseat designs both in the supersport segment and on sport touring bikes. The CBR600RR (PC37 and PC40) and the CBR1000RR Fireblade (SC57) defined the racetracks of that era - while the VFR800 VTEC combined underseat elegance with long-distance comfort.
- CBR600RR (PC37 / PC40)
- CBR1000RR (SC57)
- VFR800 VTEC (V4)

Still a proud representative of the underseat trumpet: the CBR600RR.
Kawasaki
Kawasaki also experimented with high-mounted exhaust systems between 2004 and 2008. The underseat layout was especially visible on the ZX-6R, ZX-6RR and early ZX-10R models - though not consistently across all versions.
- Ninja 2004 - 2007
- ZX-6R (2005 - 2008)
- ZX-6RR (2007 - 2008)
- ZX-636 (2007 - 2008)
- ZX-10R (2006 - 2007)

Sporty, and naturally with the exhaust in the right place: the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R.
KTM
KTM went with an angular underseat design on the 990 Super Duke (1st generation). The 640 Duke II also featured a high-mounted, almost underseat-style muffler.

A different kind of Duke: the 640 Duke with a twin underseat exhaust.
MV Agusta
The Italian premium marque was famous for its extravagant exhaust solutions. The F4 series remains one of the most iconic examples of a 4-pipe underseat design to this day. Newly added is the exclusive Superveloce 1000, which also sports an underseat look.

- Superveloce 1000

This is how metal becomes art - on the Superveloce 1000.
Suzuki
Suzuki entered the underseat era with the GSR600 and the brutal B-King. The GSR was especially popular among newcomers to the naked bike segment with sporty ambitions, while the B-King - at least visually - is more of a cautionary example for underseat solutions. Aftermarket systems provide a remedy here.
- GSR 600
- B-King

Probably the world's largest underseat exhaust on the B-King. And it came like that straight from the factory!
Triumph
Triumph brought many models with underseat exhaust to market. The Daytona 675 as well as several generations of the Speed Triple 1050 used this layout and combined it with the distinctive triple sound.

- Speed Triple 1050 (515NJ / 515NV / NN01 series)
For over a decade, the underseat exhaust was not only technically interesting but also a genuine styling element. European and Japanese manufacturers of the early 2000s in particular shaped an entire generation of bikes with this design. Today such solutions have become rare - but the fascination with this iconic exhaust lives on. Anyone who rides or collects a bike like this owns a piece of design history.

Triple engine, triple exhaust. The Daytona was a statement.
Yamaha
Yamaha showed an impressive range of underseat variants: from the supersports R1 (RN12, RN19, RN22) to the entry-level fun bike MT-03 (1st gen) to the FZ6 and the mighty MT-01. The classic XT 600 could also be seen in some variants with a high-mounted muffler close to the seat.
- YZF-R1 (RN12 / RN19 / RN22)
- FZ6
- MT-01
- XT 600
- MT-03 (1st generation)

Some remember the RN22 as the most beautiful R1 of all time.
Conclusion: A styling element that's now a rare sight
For over a decade, the underseat exhaust was not only technically interesting but also a genuine styling element. European and Japanese manufacturers of the early 2000s in particular shaped an entire generation of bikes with this design.
