Why the underseat exhaust was so popular
The appeal of the underseat exhaust came down to several factors. Above all, it was expected to improve mass centralization, which should have a direct effect on handling. A central, high-mounted exhaust shifts weight closer to the bike's centre of gravity - an advantage especially when leaning in quickly or changing direction. It also convinced people visually: the tail looked tidy, clean and extremely sporty. No bulky muffler disturbed the lines - instead, the bike almost seemed to float above the tarmac. For many riders, the underseat exhaust also had a practical advantage - in the event of a tip-over or extreme lean angle, the system was better protected than a side-mounted silencer.
Where the concept hit its limits
Despite these advantages, it became clear over time why the underseat exhaust couldn't remain a permanent solution. One of the biggest criticisms was the intense heat build-up directly under the seat. Especially in summer temperatures or in city traffic, the seat and pillion area became uncomfortably hot. In addition, the system took up valuable space under the seat - space that was urgently needed as electronics integration kept growing. At the latest with the strict Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissions standards, the underseat exhaust increasingly became a problem. Modern exhaust systems need large volumes for catalytic converters and complex exhaust gas recirculation. All of that is hard to fit under the seat without making compromises on heat, space or serviceability. Economic reasons also played a role: the construction was more elaborate, more expensive and technically more complex than conventional side exhausts.

Aprilia
Aprilia set the style in the sporty naked bike and fun bike segment with the Shiver and Dorsoduro. Both models combined V2 engines with underseat twin-exhaust systems that underlined the striking Italian design:
