Ducati Desmo450 MX: Motocross Bike with Desmo Technology

With the Desmo450 MX, Ducati presents the first motocross bike in the brand's history. It was developed with the goal of transferring technologies from racing into a new market segment. According to Ducati, the development approach follows the tradition of first testing innovative solutions on the race track. The Desmo450 MX is said to incorporate insights gained from MotoGP and the Superbike World Championship.

The bike was created in collaboration with Team Maddii Racing. The concept was presented in 2024 and was already used that same year in the Italian motocross championship, including by Alessandro Lupino and Tony Cairoli. Production starts in April 2025, with the market launch in June in Europe, followed by North America and other regions.

The heart of the Desmo450 MX is a newly developed single-cylinder four-stroke engine with 449.6 cc displacement. The desmodromic valve control – a Ducati trademark – allows, according to the manufacturer, high revs and aggressive cam profiles while maintaining large valve diameters. The engine produces 63.5 hp at 9,400 rpm and reaches a maximum torque of 53.5 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The redline sits at 11,900 rpm – that's quite a statement.

The engine features a bore of 96 mm and a stroke of 62.1 mm. The intake valves are made of titanium (40 mm), the exhaust valves of steel (33 mm) with a sodium-filled, hollow stem for improved heat dissipation. A Mikuni throttle body with a 44 mm diameter regulates fuel delivery. The exhaust system meets FIM 2025 requirements. Ducati highlights that 70% of maximum torque is already available at 4,200 rpm.

The dry weight of the engine is 26.8 kg. A balancer shaft with integrated water pump control reduces vibrations and component mass. The crankshaft is made from a composite material, the connecting rod is monolithic. An automatic up-shifter is part of the standard equipment.

The frame of the Desmo450 MX is an aluminum twin-spar frame, built from a total of eleven components, including cast, forged, and pressed parts. The goal was a structure as light as possible while still stiff, with minimal welds. Ducati states the total weight of the bike (ready to run, without fuel) as 104.8 kg.

The geometry is designed to enable a straight intake tract for optimal filling and engine performance. The swingarm is made of cast aluminum, the linkage is forged. The shock is centrally mounted.

Up front is a fully adjustable 49 mm Showa fork with 310 mm of travel. It features a closed-cartridge system, Kashima coating, and externally adjustable damping stages. At the rear, a Showa shock with 301 mm of travel offers adjustable high- and low-speed compression as well as rebound. Ducati emphasizes that the decision against air springs was made deliberately, to increase adjustability and user-friendliness.

The brakes were developed in collaboration with Brembo. Up front is a two-piston floating caliper with a 260 mm Galfer disc, at the rear a single-piston caliper with a 240 mm disc. According to Ducati, the goal was to reduce unsprung mass and improve handling.

The rims come from Takasago Excel, the spokes from Alpina. The wheel hubs are made of cast aluminum. Fitted are Pirelli Scorpion MX32 Mid-Soft tires in sizes 80/100-21 up front and 110/90-19 at the rear.

According to Ducati, the Desmo450 MX is the first motocross bike with a traction control system that detects actual rear wheel slip. Ducati Traction Control (DTC) can be set in four levels and takes into account, among other things, gear, throttle position, and vehicle movement. During jumps or deliberate clutch use, the system automatically deactivates and then reactivates itself independently.

Also standard is a three-stage launch control that operates via the rev limiter, as well as a two-stage engine brake control. Two riding modes and two throttle response maps ("Smooth" and "Dynamic") are available. Via the optional X-Link app, settings can be individually adjusted and transferred to the bike via WiFi.

Ducati says it placed great emphasis on freedom of movement. The fairings and side panels are kept narrow, with structured surfaces for better grip during acceleration phases and jumps. The design shows parallels to the Panigale and Hypermotard, for example in the front fender and headlight mask.

The 7.2-liter fuel tank is integrated in a way that doesn't compromise ergonomics. The triple clamps are made of forged aluminum, which is then machined to optimize the stiffness-to-weight ratio.

The maintenance intervals were defined with the goal of reducing operating costs. A piston change and valve clearance check are scheduled every 45 hours of operation, with a complete engine overhaul after 90 hours.

Through the Ducati Performance catalog, numerous accessories can be ordered – including billet components such as triple clamps and wheel hubs, Brembo Racing calipers, and an Akrapovič slip-on exhaust – allowing you to create a replica of the race bike. Only the Showa chassis components of the factory machines are not available.

Unfortunately, no prices for the Desmo450 MX are known yet. The MX bikes will only be sold through selected dealers with off-road expertise, so dealers who have not previously had a Ducati contract will also get their hands on the iron from Bologna. Details can be found on the Ducati website.
