KTM 300 EXC 2025 Review

Why This Two-Stroke is Unbeatable!

What happens when you bring together six seasoned enduro riders, brand new KTM 300 EXC bikes, and rally legend Alfie Cox in South Africa? The ultimate endurance test unfolds between dream beaches and technical trails. Over 70-100 kilometer daily stages, the two-stroke KTM proves why it's the top choice for true hard enduro.

When I got the chance to tour South Africa for six days with rally icon Alfie Cox, it was immediately clear: this wasn't going to be an ordinary motorcycle test. The man who has won the "Roof of Africa" nine times and podiumed at the Dakar Rally knows every rock in his homeland—he embodies the KTM spirit like no other. For 28 years, he's been leading tours through his native land, and his choice of tour bike is surprising: instead of heavy four-strokes, he consistently opts for the KTM 300 EXC two-strokes for his tours.

The Perfect Bike for African Adventures

The 2025 KTM 300 EXC comes with an impressive setup: Mitas Supersoft Enduro tires with mousse, radiator protection, fender grab handles for recovery work, and additional guards make the machine ready for true hard enduro. During our daily stages of 70 to 100 kilometers through the Wild Coast, it becomes clear: this preparation is spot on. Six riders, six intense days—and not a single technical defect. The only "maintenance" was Alfie's meticulous chain care.

Between Dream Beaches and Technical Trails

The terrain is as diverse as Africa itself: from deserted dream beaches on the Indian Ocean to technically challenging forest sections, from slippery river crossings to steep cliff climbs. What Alfie calls "leisurely enduro riding" (the four-stroke fan himself rides a 450 EXC on this "simple" terrain) turns out to be true hard enduro for us. Yet, the 300 EXC tackles every challenge with flying colors.

A group of KTM 300 EXCs along South Africa's Wild Coast - what an incredible ride.

What truly sets the KTM 300 EXC apart is its perfect balance. The throttle response is precise, and the clutch modulation is masterful. Whether on steep climbs, off-camber sections, or water crossings—you always find the right torque. Its agility in technical sections is impressive, and the ergonomics suit even taller riders perfectly. The 2024/25 suspension sets new standards with a wide range of adjustability and sensitive response. I would describe the front as flawless. However, I preferred the rear of the older models. The new bikes were a bit stiff at the back—a trait that should improve after a few hours of riding.

Small Weaknesses, Big Impact

Of course, there are some criticisms: The Euro-5 models have quirks with gearbox ventilation, and the placement of the fuel pump is not optimally resolved. This current solution is a mystery to KTM fans. How could such a senseless mistake occur at a seasoned manufacturer like KTM? As a result, you can't utilize the full tank capacity in off-road conditions, reducing the bike's range. This is uncharacteristic for KTM, as the EXC models have consistently been refined based on extensive experience in many areas. However, the new placement of the fuel pump was a very frustrating step backward.

Yet, these details can't overshadow the outstanding overall impression. Even the four-stroke fans in our group were impressed by the light weight and intuitive handling of the two-stroke KTM.

In Their Element Between Ocean and Wilderness

The true qualities of the KTM 300 EXC are particularly impressive in the Coffee Bay area along the Indian Ocean. Between deserted dream beaches and lush vegetation, the terrain's exceptional range becomes apparent. The high humidity combined with the slightly moist but not waterlogged ground creates perfect traction conditions. It's almost eerie how the machine conquers steep slopes thanks to these conditions and its optimal tires.

From Jungle to Savannah

The diversity of the landscape demands the full range of motorcycle technology. One moment you're navigating dense forest sections reminiscent of home terrain, the next the landscape opens up to vast grasslands with breathtaking ocean views. The 300 EXC demonstrates remarkable adaptability: it shines with its agility in technical forest sections, while on open stretches it impresses with stability, track precision, and high riding comfort. Riders switching from other brands or older models to the new 300 EXC will be surprised by its low vibration levels. This low vibration level certainly contributes to the bike's long-term reliability.

Navigating the Terrain with Local Respect

A unique aspect of the tour is the proximity to the local population. The route often leads directly through small homesteads, past cattle herds, and through villages. Here, another advantage of the 300 EXC becomes evident—its smooth throttle response allows for respectful riding through inhabited areas without disruptive noise. The locals greet the motorcyclists with surprising friendliness, a testament to the respect Alfie Cox commands in the region.

South Africa's unpredictable weather adds an extra challenge. During our tour, we experience everything from tropical downpours to sweltering heat. It's particularly impressive how the KTM handles these extreme conditions. After heavy rains, harmless streams turn into real bodies of water, yet the 300 EXC always finds a way through the obstacles thanks to its sensitive throttle response and balanced suspension.

The machine is particularly impressive in the legendary Valley of 1000 Hills near Durban. What sounds like a picturesque name turns out to be a true enduro paradise—or, in our case after heavy rains, more like the "Valley of 1000 Water Crossings." The combination of steep climbs, deep water crossings, and technical trails vividly demonstrates why Alfie Cox, despite his personal preference for the 450 EXC, recommends the 300 EXC to his clients. The lighter weight and better maneuverability really pay off when your energy starts to wane after hours of riding.

KTM 300 EXC – What the Community Thinks

Comments under our videos and on social media reflect a clear enthusiasm for the latest generation of the KTM 300 EXC. While this two-stroke hard enduro has gained fine-tuning over previous models, many riders praise the characteristically strong punch of the 300cc class and the linear power delivery of the new injection system. According to many, the 300 EXC, with its Throttle-Body Injection (TBI), finally regains a bit of its aggressive character without sacrificing the smoothness and user-friendliness of the TPI predecessors. The light clutch action and exceptionally strong traction in rocky terrain are highlighted positively. The vibrations are also remarkably low for a two-stroke, which is a real asset during tough enduro stages. Opinions differ slightly on the suspension: the closed WP fork receives a lot of praise for its wide adjustability and comfortable response, but according to some owners, the stiffer frame offers less compliance at the rear. Aggressive riders appreciate the added stability and precision, while more gentle enduro riders sometimes miss the comfort of previous models. Aside from that, features such as the LED lighting, easily removable seat, and tool-free suspension adjustment are convincing. Minor inconveniences are also noted, such as the hard-to-reach radiator cap and the somewhat unreliable fuel supply at low levels due to the pump mounted at the top of the tank. Overall, however, satisfaction with the new model prevails, as it offers a mature and versatile package both for ambitious hard enduro use and longer off-road rides. For those seeking a lightweight, technically modern, and powerfully tuned two-stroke enduro, the community sees the KTM 300 EXC as an excellent successor to the already popular previous generations.

Conclusion of an Unforgettable Adventure

After spending six intense days in the saddle of the KTM 300 EXC, it becomes clear: this bike is more than just a motorcycle—it's the key to real adventures. It's almost eerie how the machine pulls itself up from seemingly hopeless situations. While KTM's reputation may have taken a hit in other areas, in the hard enduro segment—especially with the 300 EXC—the reputation remains impeccable. I can only echo Alfie Cox's recommendation to opt for this two-stroke queen. And if the 300 isn't available: the 250 EXC is also an excellent alternative that shows hardly any disadvantages in practice.

Want to explore South Africa on a hard enduro yourself? Alfie Cox offers a 5-day "all-inclusive" package for 2,300 euros, including meals, accommodation, and motorcycles.
