One of the Burgman 400's biggest strengths has always been its generous amount of storage space. Under the seat lies a 42-litre storage compartment big enough for a full-face helmet and a jet helmet. In our case, storage capacity is further boosted by an optional top case with backrest, which can hold two additional helmets. Two lockable glove compartments also come as standard, making everyday use even more convenient.

Solid, Though a Little Dusty
The Suzuki Burgman 400 is one of the best-known and most established maxi-scooters on the market. Burgman 400 Comfort and Storage: Proven Virtues
The seating position is typical for a maxi-scooter: upright and comfortable, with the option to vary leg position. The large windshield also offers excellent protection from wind and weather, which is particularly beneficial on longer rides. Riders up to 1.75 m tall will find the seating position nearly perfect, while taller riders up to 1.87 m will find the space adequate, though they might wish for a bit more legroom.
Performance and Riding Behaviour: Solid, but Not Exciting
The Burgman 400 delivers everyday-usable performance that's sufficient for most rides. With just over 30 hp, it accelerates briskly up to 70 km/h, after which things get a bit sluggish. On the motorway, the scooter reaches a top speed of 140 to 145 km/h, letting it keep pace comfortably with traffic. However, the power isn't enough for sporty overtaking manoeuvres. That said, this isn't really what a vehicle like this is about, especially since you can enjoy low fuel consumption of around 4 litres per 100 kilometres.

A notable point is the traction control, which has been on board since the Euro 5 update. Combined with the long 1580 mm wheelbase and low centre of gravity, it ensures stable handling even in tricky road conditions like wet asphalt or tram tracks. That said, the question arises as to how necessary this feature really is, since the Burgman remains very manageable even without traction control.
The Burgman 400's chassis proved robust and comfortable in testing. It particularly showed its strengths on poor and uneven roads. Potholes and bumps were reliably absorbed without the chassis reaching its limits.

The chassis and adjustable seating position (thanks in part to the adjustable backrest) provide plenty of comfort.
Everyday Usability: The Suzuki Burgman 400 as a Faithful Companion
In daily use, the Burgman 400 impresses with its reliability and user-friendliness. Whether it's raining or the sun is shining, the scooter always offers good weather protection and is easy to handle. The brakes are powerful and provide a high degree of safety, even at higher speeds.
One small drawback, however, is the so-called "rubber band effect" felt when pulling away. The delay before the CVT transmits full power makes the drivetrain feel somewhat dated. The loud mechanical noises when setting off also contribute to this impression. In addition, the Burgman 400's display falls a bit short compared to more modern rivals. It's functional, but the display looks outdated, and settings have to be adjusted awkwardly, since there are no controls on the handlebar for the central LC display.

Functional, but visually dated: the Burgman cockpit.
Suzuki Burgman 400 Value for Money
A critical point when considering the Burgman 400 is the price. In Austria it costs 8,290 euros, in Germany 8,200 euros. Compared to other Japanese scooters in the same class, the Burgman appears somewhat overpriced. While buying a Suzuki Burgman means buying proven quality and reliability, there are competitors that offer similar or better features at a lower price.

Suzuki Burgman 400 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review
Der Horvath
The Suzuki Burgman 400 is a proven maxi-scooter that scores points above all for its reliability, large storage capacity, and high level of comfort. It's excellently suited for daily use and longer rides, but it reaches its limits when it comes to modern technical features. For fans of classic scooters with solid character, the Burgman remains a good choice, even if it's somewhat pricier than the competition.
