Is the Yamaha XSR900 GP shaking up the 600 supersport class?

We're well aware that comparing these bikes is a bit tricky. But what are we supposed to do? Yamaha only offers the R6 as a race version, missing out on the renaissance of 600 supersports. There have been long-running rumours about an R9, but Yamaha hasn't communicated anything concrete yet. So the GP fits the pattern of modern sportbikes best and has to face off against the thoroughbred 600s.

The three bikes, Honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and Yamaha XSR900 GP, each offer unique characteristics and are designed for different types of riders. The Honda CBR600RR stands out with its compact 599cc engine producing 119 hp, and is particularly suited to riders who appreciate light and agile handling. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R impresses with a slightly larger 636cc engine and an impressive output of 124 hp, paired with high torque of 69 Nm, which makes it ideal for sporty rides and dynamic acceleration. Despite these differences, the tyre situation should remain fair. A uniform tyre was used within the scope of the supersport bike test: the Bridgestone S23. The Honda CBR600RR impresses right away with its extremely precise chassis setup, which plays to its strengths especially on twisty sections. The CBR600RR's engine is revvy and delivers enough performance both on the race track and on the road. The excellent brakes deserve particular mention, as they give a confident riding feel.

As for ergonomics, the Honda offers a sporty but not overly aggressive seating position. This also makes it suitable for longer rides on the road. However, the heat generated by the classic underseat exhaust can be bothersome on longer rides, especially for the pillion.

In terms of electronics and features, the CBR600RR comes equipped with modern features such as an easy-to-read TFT display and advanced traction control. The quickshifter works excellently, though it requires somewhat firmer inputs compared to the competitors. The CBR600RR's sound is impressive and delivers an authentic race feel even without an aftermarket exhaust.

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R stands out thanks to its 636cc engine, which gives it a clear advantage in performance in the lower rev range. However, the chassis is less precise by comparison and gives less feedback, which slightly detracts from the riding feel.

The seating position of the Ninja ZX-6R is very aggressive, with an extreme knee angle and low clip-ons. This makes riding tiring both on the road and on the race track. Overall, the ergonomics aren't designed for relaxed riding.

In terms of electronics and features, the Ninja ZX-6R lags behind. It lacks modern features such as ride-by-wire and a blipper, and the display isn't up to the latest state of the art. The ZX-6R's quickshifter is very soft, which some riders who prefer a gentle shift action might like.

The Yamaha XSR900 GP stands out thanks to its 900cc three-cylinder engine, which gives it a clear displacement advantage. This makes it particularly powerful on the road. The chassis offers an excellent compromise between sporty performance and comfort, which makes handling easier even at higher speeds.

The XSR900 GP offers a more relaxed seating position than the other two bikes, making it more comfortable for longer rides. The sporty seating position isn't too aggressive and offers good wind protection. In terms of electronics and features, the Yamaha is very well equipped. A large TFT display, cruise control and modern controls are all standard. The XSR900 GP's quickshifter works best in comparison and provides a pleasant riding experience. The powerful sound of the three-cylinder engine rounds off the positive overall picture.

For riders who are mainly out on the road and looking for a comfortable, powerful bike, the Yamaha XSR900 GP is the best choice. Anyone looking for the ultimate performance on the race track, on the other hand, will be happiest with the Honda CBR600RR. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R offers an interesting compromise, but doesn't match up to the other two, either on the road or on the race track.
