Modeka Matlock & Brandon Cargo Jeans - Urban Motorcycle Outfit

When it comes to stylish, gentleman-like motorcycle outfits, one often looks to British fashion for inspiration. It's no coincidence that the Cafe Racer and the Gentlemans Ride both originate from the United Kingdom and are considered the epitome of the classically styled rider. Modeka also has motorcycle gear in the classic English look on offer, such as the Modeka Glasgow jacket. But for those who find that a bit too traditional, there's the modernized variant, which I got to try out myself - the Modeka Matlock jacket.

The Matlock jacket is the modern brother of the Glasgow jacket and still relies on the classic 4-pocket look, though refined with modern accents. The buttons are more understated in silver, and the waist adjustment on the hips now works via two press-stud adjustable belts. Like its traditional sister jacket, the Matlock jacket's outer material is also a water-repellent wax fabric, designed to protect against the elements and cooler temperatures. If it's really raining cats and dogs, there's also a removable Humax membrane that withstands a water column of up to 10,000 mm. If the weather calls for heat and sun instead of rain, ventilation zips let some airflow reach the body.

During my rides with the Matlock jacket, I encountered both sunshine and rain. Paradoxically, I got caught in a nasty storm in Andalusia, which is otherwise always sunny, and at the same time I was able to see for myself during the first test of the BMW R 12 nineT how good the jacket looks on modern retro bikes. The doubled-up crash zones with diamond stitching fit very nicely with Modern Classics. It feels like the jacket is made more for cool to mild seasons, but with the optional membranes you're well equipped even in cold temperatures and adverse weather. That should also apply in the event of a crash, although I haven't tested that myself, since the Matlock jacket features Level 2 protectors at the shoulders and elbows. A back protector can also be retrofitted as an option.

Weather resistance isn't its thing, but just like the Matlock jacket, it's very practical thanks to its large pockets. On top of that, the Brandon Cargo jeans look casual and go well with the modern retro jacket. The trousers, made from Active Twill Denim outer fabric (98% cotton, 2% elastane), are quite soft and comfortable to wear, while DuPont Kevlar material in the hip, seat, and knee areas, along with knee and retrofittable hip protectors, provide safety in case of a fall. I like the Brandon Cargo jeans in the sand colorway, as it matches very well with the brown and beige tones commonly found on retro bikes. It also suits a beanpole like me thanks to the slim fit, and completes the cool urban retro motorcycle outfit when paired with a matching jacket.
