ContiAttack SM 2 Supermoto tires 2024 - first experiences

The distinctive feature of the ContiAttack SM 2 is its specific emphasis on the supermoto category. Unlike traditional street or touring tires, which frequently do not fulfill the needs of supermoto riders or match the demands of these motorcycles, this tire was designed specifically for this purpose.

The Supermoto ContiAttack SM 2 comes with cutting-edge technologies. The GripLimitFeedback technology delivers accurate feedback on tire friction, enhancing control and confidence during aggressive leaning. RainGrip provides excellent wet traction, while the BlackChili Compound boosts grip and longevity. Alongside these new features, the ContiAttack SM 2 includes established technologies like MultiGrip and TractionSkin for consistent performance and secure handling. The 0° steel belt construction guarantees stability at high speeds.

The Supermoto ContiAttack SM 2 will be launched in the first quarter of 2024. Initially, it will come in sizes 120/70 R 17 (front) and 160/60 R 17 (rear). Additional sizes like 110/70 R 17 (front), 140/70 R 17, and 150/60 R 17 (rear) will be introduced later in the year.

To showcase its performance beforehand, Conti took the SM 2 to its own test track, where it outperformed its predecessor significantly in both dry and wet conditions. But enough about the facts and figures. During our testing, we had the expertise of Raphael Michels, who is not only familiar with the tire itself, but also with the world of supermoto. As the product manager for the ContiAttack SM 2 during the week, he takes on race tracks on weekends as part of the German Supermoto Championship. With his wealth of experience, he provided the Conti developers with his wishlist for this tire, making the SM 2 truly his brainchild.

After mounting the tire on our test Supermoto bikes (KTM 690 SMC-R and Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono), we were eager to tackle the twists and turns. Thanks to the Conti TractionSkin technology, which eliminates the need for tire surface release agents, the SM 2 was ready to go right after a brief warm-up - no break-in period necessary! We took full advantage of the best roads near Barcelona, a seemingly endless paradise of curves. The ContiAttack SM 2 consistently provided excellent grip and clear feedback, allowing us to navigate the challenging corners with stability and confidence on these high-performance bikes. There was never a moment of doubt about pushing the lean angle too far - the SM 2 kept us on course! This tire clearly demonstrates its suitability for the Supermoto class. And as if that wasn't enough, it also boasted a fantastic tire tread design.

Our experience with the ContiAttack SM 2 cannot simply be labeled as a test. Under ideal conditions and on a track-like asphalt surface, the dry performance was truly impressive. The tire grips the road like glue! However, we only had the chance to ride on the tire for four days before having to return both the tires and bikes to their respective owners - the dealers and importers. As a result, we are unable to provide any feedback on the claimed 30 percent increase in mileage and the enhanced wet performance. To assess these improvements, an endurance test would be necessary, a challenge that would likely be taken up by the 1000PS editorial team. The ContiAttack SM 2 has clearly demonstrated to us that supermotos are at their best when equipped with the right tires.
