Ever since the revival of the Husqvarna brand under the KTM Group, the two naked bike models from the iconic Swedish manufacturer, the Svart and Vitpilen (Swedish for black and white arrow), have become key players in the Husqvarna lineup. With over 64,000 units sold since their debut, these bikes have made a significant impact. The smaller engine classes, in particular, have contributed greatly to this success, leading to a major update for the A1 and A2 Pilen models. This update is largely based on feedback from customers and the media, resulting in the Arrows becoming larger, more sophisticated, more contemporary, and more closely aligned with each other.

New features for Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401 2024

The Husqvarna Naked Bike features a brand new, liquid-cooled single cylinder engine with a dual overhead camshaft. With a displacement of 398.6 cc, this single-cylinder engine now delivers approximately 25 cc more power, generating 45 hp at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Despite its increased size, the motorcycle remains too light to fully utilize the 48 hp potential allowed by the A2 license, as it would exceed the legal limit of 0.2 kW per kilogram of weight at full A2 power. This new engine is compliant with the latest EU5+ standard and offers extended service intervals of 10,000 km for oil changes and 20,000 km for valve checks, surpassing the maintenance schedule of its predecessors.

With the introduction of the new engine and desired modifications to the Svart and Vitpilen models, a new steel trellis frame and aluminum swingarm were also necessary for the Husqvarna Naked Bike. This resulted in an increased wheelbase of approximately 10 mm to 1368 mm, providing the Arrows with more stability at higher speeds. The updated suspension aims to enhance the riding experience, featuring a 43 mm USD fork at the front with adjustable compression damping on the left fork leg and adjustable rebound damping on the right fork leg. The preload and rebound can now be adjusted on the monoshock, which is now positioned off-center. The inclusion of a Bump Stop and Hydraulic Stop System ensures a progressive suspension response on rough terrain, with both Pilen models offering 150 mm of travel at the front and rear. Unlike the previous models, the suspension adjustments are now simplified into fewer steps with significant impact, catering to riders of all levels. In 2024, the adjustment options have been reduced to just 5 clicks from the previous 30 at the front and 25 at the rear, while maintaining the same adjustment range. Husqvarna's rationale behind this change is to make the suspension adjustment process more user-friendly for both new and returning riders. The clear distinction between each of the 5 steps should facilitate easier customization of the suspension settings.

Bigger & more modern - 2024 update of the Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen

The suspension settings may have been reduced, but the new Husqvarna Naked Bike models, the Svart and Vitpilen, are packed with modern electronics. The 5-inch TFT display, inspired by the Norden and KTM models, stands out immediately. This display allows for smartphone connectivity and control over features like cornering ABS with Supermoto mode, lean angle-dependent traction control, and Rain and Street riding modes. The switch units have been redesigned for easier use, complemented by newly designed LED light elements. Additionally, a quickshifter with blipper function comes standard on the Svart and Vitpilen. This is impressive equipment for an A2 motorcycle.

The dimensions of the Husqvarna Naked Bike models have also increased significantly. The fairing alone has grown by around 20%. The rear has also been widened to offer passengers more comfort and space, and the tank has grown by a total of 3.5 liters to a volume of 13 liters. A larger engine, larger dimensions, and a larger tank naturally result in an increase in weight. Ready to ride, the Vitpilen weighs 165 kg, the Svartpilen approximately 170 kg.

Differences between Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401 2024

The Husqvarna Naked Bike lineup includes the Svartpilen and Vitpilen models, both of which feature innovative design elements. However, what sets these two bikes apart? The Vitpilen is known for its sporty nature, while the Svartpilen offers a more upright and adventurous riding experience. The Vitpilen is equipped with cast aluminum rims and Michelin Power 6 tires, whereas the Svartpilen features spoked rims and chunky Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires. Additionally, the Svartpilen comes with an engine protection plate, tank luggage rack, small windshield, and a distinctive pillion bar at the rear. Despite both bikes having 17-inch tires, they are not intended for serious off-road use. The main differences between the Svartpilen and Vitpilen are primarily visual, including ergonomic differences.

Ergonomics of the Husqvarna Vitpilen & Svartpilen 401 2024

Up until now, there was a significant difference, especially in terms of ergonomics, as the seating position on the Husqvarna Vitpilen was quite sporty and radical due to the stub handlebars. It looked cool, but not many people were interested in buying it. Starting from 2024, it now features straight handlebars typical of naked bikes. On the Husqvarna Svartpilen, the handlebars curve slightly higher and closer towards the rider, and that's the extent of the ergonomic differences between the two models. The position of the footrests and the seat height of 820 mm remain the same. In order to achieve this lower seat height, the airbox located under the seat had to be repositioned, which also explains the lateral position. At 1.85 m tall, I had and still have no issues reaching the ground with my feet. According to Husqvarna, this should now also be possible for individuals over 1.70 m tall. But does this mean that the Vit and Svartpilen are now even less suitable for taller riders? Even with long legs, the knee angle is not overly acute and the sitting position on the Svartpilen in particular is very upright. The increased dimensions and the wider, longer seat make the new versions of the Husqvarna Naked Bikes more appealing for taller riders. The smaller previous models already seemed somewhat out of place from the exterior, but now even MOTORCYCLE tester Phil, standing at 1.90 m, claims to feel more comfortable.

Handling of the Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401 2024

The streets of Andalusia are a motorcycling paradise, with weather conditions perfect for riding even in winter. It's no wonder that many motorcycle presentations and tests are held here. Unfortunately, this time we were met with less than ideal weather in southern Spain, including rain, storms, and even hail. Instead of enjoying a thrilling ride through the curves, we found ourselves navigating the corners in less than ideal conditions. Despite this, I was still able to gather some valuable insights for the Husqvarna Naked Bike. Looking forward to more tests of the Svart and Vitpilen models in the upcoming season.

Let's begin with the obvious: Due to the strong ergonomic similarity between the Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen, there isn't much difference in handling. On the Vitpilen, you sit slightly more front-wheel-oriented on the bike and, thanks to the lighter aluminum rims and road tires, you need a little less input on the handlebars to get the bike into a lean angle. The Svartpilen also handles corners willingly, with its slightly more upright riding position tempting you to adopt a pushing riding style, but this is more of a nuance, as both Husqvarna models ride very similarly. The Svartpilen's chunky Pirelli tires also perform extremely well on paved roads and in wet conditions. Therefore, starting in 2024, the differences in riding dynamics will no longer determine which Pilen bike you should choose.

Similar to its previous models, the new Husqvarna Naked Bike features a highly advanced single-cylinder engine. The throttle response is precise, delivering power smoothly and consistently from 2,500 rpm, with an extra kick of power kicking in around 5,500 rpm. Vibration levels are well controlled, with only minor high-frequency vibrations noticeable at higher engine speeds, but not to the point of being disruptive. With 45 hp, the single cylinder engine can effortlessly reach speeds of 130 km/h on the highway. Husqvarna claims a top speed of 181 km/h for this model.

The wealth of electronic features has been inherited from the Norden 901 and previous KTM models, ensuring reliable performance. While some features may be less commonly used in the A2 performance class, such as the multi-stage traction control, the cornering ABS is a valuable safety addition. The Supermoto ABS allows for playful rear wheel lock-ups. The new TFT display simplifies electronic system adjustments and information reading, representing a significant upgrade for the Svart and Vitpilen. The quickshifter operates smoothly with minimal effort, facilitating seamless gear shifts. Two riding modes are available, with Rain mode offering more subdued power delivery. The finely-tuned engine ensures excellent performance even in challenging conditions on the road mode.

Agile fun bikes despite larger dimensions and a weakness - Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401 Test 2024

If you're concerned that the Svartpilen and Vitpilen have lost some of their agility and fun factor due to increased weight and larger dimensions, fear not. They still offer a nimble and playful ride through corners and city traffic. The suspension is slightly less aggressively tuned compared to the current KTM 390 Duke. It effectively smooths out small bumps and handles larger impacts, but in the standard setting, it felt a bit underdamped and bumpy for me while leaning. This is where the reduced setting levels come into play, as a simple adjustment towards a firmer suspension setting greatly improves handling. Overall, each of the five setting levels now represents a more significant change. This is beneficial for less experienced riders, as it provides clearer feedback on the effects of each adjustment option.

Unfortunately, the riding experience on the Husqvarna Naked Bike is somewhat marred by the braking system. While the 320 mm front brake disc with a 4-piston brake caliper and the 240 mm rear disc with a 2-piston brake caliper from Brembo's ByBre division may sound good on paper, the reality is different. The rear brake feels spongy and lacks power, even when applied firmly. Additionally, there were noticeable variations in the front brakes among the approximately 15 test bikes at the launch event. Initially, I believed that the front brakes on the sporty Husqvarna Naked Bike were better tuned compared to the Svartpilen model, which had a soft feel and a vague pressure point. However, upon learning from Husqvarna technicians that there were no technical differences, I tested all the bikes available. The majority of the bikes had brakes that felt too soft, with only a few standing out. This inconsistency in the production process at Bajaj in India is disappointing, as good braking performance is crucial for rider confidence. The other high-quality components on the Husqvarna Naked Bike deserve equally capable brakes.

The highlights of the Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 125 2024

The 125cc Svartpilen and Vitpilen models have also been updated in 2024 and share almost all the features and innovations with their larger A2 siblings. They are almost identical in design, but have grown significantly in size and sophistication. The main difference lies in the engine, which is a smaller version of the 401 unit, featuring only one overhead camshaft and delivering a final output of 15 hp. The electronics have been mostly retained, with the 125cc Arrows even equipped with a standard quickshifter, although traction control, deemed unnecessary at this power level, has been omitted. However, the cornering ABS system remains. There are also differences in the suspension, as the A1 version of the Husqvarnas does not have adjustable front suspension and only allows for adjustments at the rear. Apart from these differences, most of the details mentioned in this report also apply to the Svart and Vitpilen 125 models.

Price comparison of the Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401 2024

How much do you need to fork out for the new Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen 401? The Svartpilen costs €100 more than its Vitpilen counterpart. In Austria, the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 2024 is priced at €6,899, while the Vitpilen 401 2024 comes in at €6,999. You can check out the German prices and Swiss prices for the Husqvarna Svart and Vitpilen 401 here. Compared to its competitors, the new Husqvarna Naked Bikes fall into the higher end of the A2 class. The KTM sibling, the 390 Duke 2024, is also priced at €6,999 in Austria. However, the new Triumph Speed 400 comes in at just under €6,000, while the 48 hp two-cylinder Honda CL500 is a bit pricier at €7,490.

It will be interesting to see how the new dimensions and ergonomic changes of the Husqvarna Naked Bike will appeal to customers. The potential to attract both smaller and larger riders is there, but the A2 segment is a highly competitive market. The strengths of the Husqvarna Naked Bike lie in its powerful engine, successful ergonomics, stylish design, and modern electronics. The increased weight may be seen as a drawback, although I found the braking system to be lacking. It will be fascinating to see the reception of the new Husqvarna Naked Bike by A2 riders.

Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review

Gregor

With the 2024 update, the Vitpilen 401 has become significantly larger, more mature and therefore heavier and more modern. With a lower seat height and increased dimensions, it has become more attractive for both short and tall riders. The new TFT display is more attractive to look at and offers practical benefits. Despite the extra weight, the Vitpilen remains an agile fun bike. However, old fans of the Vitpilen might miss the sporty stance of the previous model. This has been significantly toned down and is now almost identical to its sister model, the Svartpilen. On the move, the powerful engine, adjustable suspension and more modern electronics score points. Only the weak, less powerful brakes dampen the riding pleasure somewhat. If the old Vitpilen was too small, too high or too radical for you, you should give it another chance in 2024.

Fun single-cylinder engine with top quickshifter and low vibrations

Adjustable chassis

More space in the saddle than before

More accessible than before

Beautiful TFT display & lush electronics

With the 2024 update, the Svartpilen 401 has become significantly larger, more grown-up and therefore also heavier and more modern. With a lower seat height and wider dimensions, it has become more attractive for both short and tall riders. The new TFT display is more attractive to look at and offers practical benefits. Despite the extra weight, the Svartpilen remains an agile fun bike with decent power from the single cylinder, a relaxed riding position and adjustable, well-functioning suspension. Only the lax, less powerful brakes spoil the riding fun somewhat. If the old Svartpilen was too small or too high, you should give it another chance in 2024.
