Triumph is introducing the Scrambler 400x model, alongside the road-focused Speed 400, catering to A2 riders seeking more than just asphalt. With mixed tires, increased suspension travel, and a rugged design, this bike is not only a head-turner but also ready for some off-road fun.

Design and ergonomics of the Triumph Scrambler 400x 2024

The Triumph Naked Bike, Triumph Scrambler 400x, achieves its rugged off-road appearance through a straightforward yet impactful formula: a headlight grille, hand protectors, and aggressive Metzeler Karoo Street tires (19-inch front and 17-inch rear) paired with increased suspension travel (now 150 millimeters front and rear). These carefully considered modifications distinguish it from its counterpart, the Speed 400. Both the tank, engine, and electronics are shared between these two new 400cc Triumph bikes, manufactured in India. As a result, the ergonomics of the Scrambler 400x closely resemble those of the Speed 400. However, the taller suspension setup places riders at a height of 835 millimeters, compared to 790 millimeters on the Speed 400, creating a more upright riding position. Additionally, the handlebars are 30 millimeters wider, and the footrests, positioned slightly lower, provide a comfortable knee angle. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the rider-friendly layout, offering ample knee support against the tank even when standing. These features make the Triumph Naked Bike ideal for both road and dirt track adventures.

Handling and chassis of the Triumph Scrambler 400x 2024

Let's begin with the Triumph Naked Bike. The Triumph Naked Bike provides a smooth riding experience on the asphalt, handling corners with stability and responding promptly to commands from the handlebars and foot pegs. It handles the curves with composure, not swaying as agilely as the Speed 400, but still feeling manageable. The 19-inch front wheel is effectively controlled by the softly tuned Big Piston fork during leans. Similar to the shock absorber, it delivers a high level of suspension comfort, staying true to the essence of a naked bike.

By the way, the Triumph Naked Bike has significantly lower foot pegs which reduce the lean angle clearance compared to the Speed 400, even with the extended suspension components. When taking corners at higher speeds, the metal will soon touch the asphalt and limit the cornering speed.

Accelerating and braking the Triumph Scrambler 400x 2024

Straight ahead, the Triumph Naked Bike unleashes an impressive amount of sporting spirit from its 398 cubic centimeters of displacement. The newly developed single-cylinder engine powers the Triumph Naked Bike, providing 40 hp at 8000 rpm and 37.5 Nm at 6500 rpm, making it A2-compatible. Despite its classic look with cooling fins, it is a lively companion with a discreet noise level of 91 dB(A) at standstill. The four-valve single-cylinder engine comes alive from 3500 rpm and accelerates noticeably at 6000 rpm, offering a comfortable ride from the lower to upper mid-range. The engine revs up to over 9200 rpm, providing a wide usable speed range for a 400 cc engine and reaching a top speed of 145 km/h. Typical vibrations are present in the upper range, but are pleasantly absent during normal riding in the medium speed range. The throttle response is slightly delayed but smooth, with no jerking or twitching. The clutch, equipped with an anti-hopping function, and gearbox require minimal force and are user-friendly. Additionally, the fuel consumption is low at 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers, allowing for a theoretical range of over 350 kilometers with the 13-liter tank.

For safe speed reduction, Triumph equips the Naked Bike with a 300-millimeter single disc brake featuring a four-piston fixed caliper, similar to the setup on the Speed 400 model, but with milder brake pads. While the braking system has a user-friendly design, some riders may prefer a bit more initial bite, similar to what is found on the Speed 400. The ABS system on this Triumph Naked Bike effectively prevents the front wheel from locking up during braking.

This remains true even when venturing off-road, where the ABS has more drawbacks than benefits, leading to its deactivation on the Scrambler 400x, along with the traction control. With its sturdy frame, the motorcycle handles rough and uneven dirt trails with confidence, providing ample reserves.

Equipment and price of the Triumph Scrambler 400x 2024

The Triumph Naked Bike comes equipped with a high-quality cockpit featuring an analog speedometer and an additional LC display that can be easily operated via switches on the handlebars. Providing essential information such as a gear indicator, remaining range display, and more, the cockpit has everything a rider needs. For added comfort, optional heated grips are seamlessly integrated into the display. Additionally, a convenient USB-C charging socket is also included. Riders can further customize their bike with accessories like mirrors, luggage solutions (with a maximum load capacity of 176 kilograms including the rider), and a small windshield available in the original accessories lineup. With options to suit every rider's personal preferences and budget, the base price for the Triumph Naked Bike is 6045 euros in Germany and 6695 euros in Austria.
