Review: Daytona Road Star GTX Motorcycle Boots

20 Years - A Motorcycle Boot for Life

There’s motorcycle gear you buy and quickly need to replace, and then there’s gear that sticks with you for decades. The Daytona Road Star GTX definitely falls into the latter category. I picked up these boots over 20 years ago—not for any special reason, but because they got rave reviews everywhere and came highly recommended. Back then, I never imagined I’d be wearing them for two decades, through countless tours, day-to-day rides, and even the occasional track day.

Now, after all these years, it was time for a new pair and a look back. Not because the old ones had become completely unusable, but because signs of aging were starting to show, which you just have to accept after so long. This is a great moment to reflect on countless rides in various weather conditions and appreciate what makes these boots so special.

Craftsmanship and Materials of the Daytona Road Star GTX

The Road Star GTX is a top-quality crafted boot through and through. It all starts with the material: thick, durable cowhide leather forms the foundation, striking a perfect balancenot too soft, not too stifffor a direct, secure feel while riding. The leather withstands not only mechanical stress but also the test of time. Over the years, my old boots developed a patina, but the leather never became brittle or cracked. Only the plastic gear shift protector on the top of the foot gave out during my last run on the supermoto track. Yet, they remain fully functional.

Inside, a GORE-TEX® membrane ensures dryness, and it does so reliably. I've encountered torrential rain with these boots, both in the Alps and in everyday life, on country roads and highways, and my feet stayed dry. It was only after more than 15 years that a bit of moisture occasionally seeped through. Still, the membrane has held up remarkably well.

Comfort for Everyday Use and Touring

What stands out with the Road Star GTX is the comfort. It begins with the entry: two side zippers make putting them on and taking them off a breeze, even with thicker socks or wider feet. I've worn the boots on short commutes to work, extended tours, and in both hot and cold conditions. I never experienced blisters, pressure points, or tired feet. Even while walking, whether during stops or sightseeing, the comfort was satisfactory, though of course not comparable to a hiking boot. However, the boots always impressed me with their flexibility and feel for the footpegs and gear shifting. Even when new, they are relatively supple. Once broken in, they feel almost like sneakers. This is also one of the reasons I never wanted to replace them.

Safety and Stability

In terms of safety, the Road Star GTX is a heavyweight contender. The reinforcements in the ankle, shift, and heel areas provide a secure feel without being stiff. The sole is grippy, even in wet conditions, and has never delaminated or turned brittle. The only time I nearly lost traction was at a gas station stop with a floor slick with gasoline and oil, but thats more about the surface than the boot. The stability during sporty rides is particularly commendable. While the Road Star is not a racing boot, I've taken it to track events multiple times. It reaches its limits with no sliders or hard shells, but for occasional track days, its more than adequate. I always felt connected to the bike, had a solid grip on the pegs, and never felt insecure.

Durability: Two Decades of Continuous Use

The biggest advantage, and my personal reason for this review, is the incredible longevity. 20 years, many thousands of kilometers, all seasons, countless weather changes, dirt, rain, sun, salt. These boots have endured it all. I've occasionally maintained themcleaned, polished, and oiledbut never gave them any elaborate special treatment. And yet, they've held up to this day.

Of course, they are no longer visually pristine; the soles show wear, the zippers have become a bit sticky, and the Gore-Tex membrane isn't completely watertight anymore. But after so long, this is not just understandable; it's rather impressive. No wonder I wanted the exact same boots again. What pleased me very much was the fact that after so many years, they remain largely unchanged. In today's world, it's rare for a product to stay on the market with minimal changes over such a long period. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Value for Money: Daytona Road Star GTX

A boot like the Road Star GTX isn't exactly a bargain. As of 2025, the price ranges from about 400 to 480 euros, depending on the retailer. However, when you consider its lifespan and quality, it becomes clear: this is not an expensive product but rather an investment. Calculated over 20 years, the boot costs about 20 euros per year. For something that needs to perform flawlessly as part of safety gear, that's excellent value.

The Alternative: Daytona Road Vent GTX

The Road Vent GTX is the airy, lightweight alternative, built on the proven Road Star GTX platform. Its perforated surfaces and CORDURA® inserts provide a noticeable ventilation effect, making it comfortable to wear even in high temperatures. Despite the ventilation, the boot remains waterproof and breathable thanks to the GORE-TEX Carbon-Grey membrane. The combination of water-repellent, specially greased full-grain leather and robust, abrasion-resistant inserts ensures durability and safety. Two zippers make it easy to put on, while the generous calf adjustment with Velcro closures ensures a perfect fit. Protection is also well-covered: ankle and shin guards, a plastic-reinforced insole with a steel insert, and a 3M-Scotchlite heel reflector enhance safety on the road. With its lightweight, non-slip sport rubber sole and anatomically shaped climate insole, the Road Vent GTX is a comfortable and secure companionespecially for motorcyclists who don't want to compromise on safety and quality "Made in Germany," even in summer.

My Conclusion

The Daytona Road Star GTX isn't about flashy design or built for professional track racing. But it is what many motorcyclists dream of: a reliable companion that performs year after year. It protects, keeps you warm and dry, fits comfortably, and lasts nearly forever, whether you're touring, in the city, or on the track. Here's to the next 20 years!
