Starting with the engine, the Yamaha MT-09 SP 2018 is equipped with a more powerful three-cylinder engine compared to the Yamaha MT-07 2023, which has a two-cylinder engine. The MT-09 SP has an engine power of 115 HP and a torque of 87.5 Nm, while the MT-07 has a lower engine power of 73.4 HP and a torque of 67 Nm. In terms of fuel system, both bikes have fuel injection systems, ensuring efficient fuel delivery. However, the MT-09 SP has an additional feature of a quickshifter, which allows for smoother and faster gear shifts. The MT-07 lacks this feature, making gear shifting slightly less seamless.

The suspension systems of both bikes are similar, with a telescopic fork at the front and a swing arm with a monoshock at the rear. In terms of strengths, the MT-09 SP 2018 stands out with its incredibly powerful engine, good brakes, sporty and comfortable seating position, ABS, traction control, and shift assistant. On the other hand, the MT-07 2023 has the strengths of an easy-to-read and beautiful display, a charismatic engine, a versatile seating position, and good brakes.

However, both bikes have their weaknesses as well. The MT-09 SP has a high saddle, limited shift assistant functionality (only for upshifting), and instruments that do not stand out strongly from the basic version. The MT-07 2023 has a lax chassis with insufficient damping, a somewhat intransparent gearstick feeling, non-intuitive operation, lack of traction control, an inactive seating position, and a slightly soft seat for long journeys.

Pros and Cons in comparison

Pros and Cons in comparison

Yamaha MT-09 SP 2018

Yamaha MT-09 SP 2018

The Yamaha MT-09 SP is the refinement of an already very good mid-range naked bike. With better suspension components from Öhlins and Kayaba, a nicer paint job and a justifiably higher price, the SP version is clearly the sportiest choice within the Yamaha MT-09 range. The brute power of the engine does not allow the MT-09 SP to be ridden comfortably, but that is not necessary on the "Special" - the fun is clearly in the foreground! The Yamaha MT-09 EVO with Wilbers suspension is now available as an interesting alternative, because it has no "war paint" and is very discreet. But unfortunately only for Switzerland...
