Overview - Ducati Monster SP 2023 vs KTM 790 Duke 2020

The Ducati Monster SP 2023 and the KTM 790 Duke 2020 are both naked bikes with similar engine types, fuel systems, and cooling systems. However, there are several differences in their technical specifications and features.

Starting with the engine power, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 has a slightly higher power output of 111 HP compared to the KTM 790 Duke 2020's 105 HP. This difference in power may result in a slightly more exhilarating and responsive ride on the Ducati.

In terms of suspension, both bikes feature upside-down telescopic forks at the front and swing arm suspensions at the rear. However, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 is equipped with Öhlins suspension, which is known for its high-quality performance and adjustability. On the other hand, the KTM 790 Duke 2020 features WP suspension, which is also reputable but may not offer the same level of adjustability as Öhlins.

When it comes to braking systems, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 is equipped with Brembo Stylema brakes, which are known for their excellent stopping power and control. The KTM 790 Duke 2020 also features double disk brakes with four pistons, but it does not specify the brand. The Brembo brakes on the Ducati may provide a more confident and precise braking experience.

In terms of rider assistance systems, both bikes offer advanced features such as ABS and traction control. However, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 goes a step further and includes additional features like riding modes, cornering ABS, launch control, ride by wire, quickshifter, and anti-wheelie. These additional features may enhance the overall riding experience and provide more control and safety.

In terms of dimensions and weights, both bikes have similar front and rear tire widths and diameters. They also have similar wheelbases and fuel tank capacities. However, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 has a slightly lower seat height of 810 mm compared to the KTM 790 Duke 2020's 825 mm. This may make the Ducati more accessible to riders with shorter inseams.

In terms of equipment, both bikes offer LED daytime running lights and LED headlights. The Ducati Monster SP 2023 also features a TFT display, which may provide a more modern and informative interface compared to the KTM 790 Duke 2020's unspecified display. Additionally, the KTM 790 Duke 2020 has an adjustable windscreen, which may provide some added wind protection during longer rides.

In terms of strengths, the Ducati Monster SP 2023 is praised for its lively and high-torque engine, finely responsive Öhlins suspension, powerful Brembo Stylema brakes, beautiful sound from the Termignoni exhaust, sporty ergonomics, and good quickshifter. On the other hand, the KTM 790 Duke 2020 is praised for its high-revving two-cylinder engine, quickshifter as standard, great chassis set-up, playful handling, high-quality electronics package, TFT display, and good price/performance ratio.

However, there are also weaknesses to consider. The Ducati Monster SP 2023 is criticized for jerking in the low rev range, having a very high price, and a sluggish clutch. On the other hand, the KTM 790 Duke 2020's only weakness mentioned is that the suspension spring preload is adjustable at the rear only.

In conclusion, both the Ducati Monster SP 2023 and the KTM 790 Duke 2020 have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Ducati offers a more powerful engine, higher-quality suspension and brakes, and a more advanced rider assistance system. However, it comes at a higher price and has some reported issues with low rev range performance and clutch response. The KTM offers a good balance of performance, handling, and price, but may not have the same level of refinement and advanced features as the Ducati. Ultimately, the choice between the two will depend on the rider's preferences and priorities.

Pros and Cons in comparison

Pros and Cons in comparison

Ducati Monster SP 2023

Ducati Monster SP 2023

The SP version is clearly the more expensive, but also clearly the better Ducati Monster. Everything fits together perfectly, because it is typically Ducati sporty. The fully adjustable Öhlins suspension (including the fork in Swedish gold!) fulfils its purpose perfectly, the Brembo Stylema braking system grips vehemently but not unpleasantly and the seating position, with its slightly more forward lean, is sporty but still comfortable. Even the engine fits very well into the concept of the very sporty mid-range naked bike - it wants to be revved and delivers the most power at the top end. If you are looking for a flaw in the Monster SP, it is most likely the jerking of the V2 at low revs, but true fans of the 90° V2 engine will not be offended by this at all. The price is not a problem either, as the Italians pay a pretty high price for the performance of the SP version.

KTM 790 Duke 2020

A sporty naked bike that not only has enough power, but also playful handling and high-quality equipment - the KTM 790 Duke ticks all the boxes. If the looks don't bother you, it's hard to find anything the 790 can't do well, because in its hunting ground - the country road - it forms a wonderfully rounded package that doesn't really leave anything to be desired. Initial teething troubles have also been solved, which is why the KTM 790 Duke is still a real recommendation!
