Overview - Yamaha R7 2021 vs Yamaha MT-09 2020

The Yamaha R7 2021 and the Yamaha MT-09 2020 are both popular models from Yamaha, but they have several differences in terms of specifications and features.

Starting with the engine, the Yamaha R7 2021 is equipped with a 689cc in-line twin engine, while the Yamaha MT-09 2020 has a larger 847cc in-line three-cylinder engine. The MT-09 has a higher engine power of 115 HP compared to the R7's 73.4 HP, giving it a more powerful and aggressive performance. The MT-09 also has a higher torque of 87.5 Nm compared to the R7's 67 Nm, providing better acceleration and responsiveness.

In terms of design, the R7 has a more sporty riding position, making it suitable for track riding and offering better aerodynamics. On the other hand, the MT-09 has a more upright and comfortable riding position with high handlebars, which may not provide as much feedback to the rider.

Both bikes feature upside-down telescopic forks for the front suspension and a swing arm with a monoshock for the rear suspension. The R7 has a steel frame, while the MT-09 has an aluminum frame, which may contribute to differences in weight and handling. The R7 has a slightly steeper rake angle of 66.3 degrees compared to the MT-09's 65 degrees, potentially offering more agility and responsiveness in corners.

In terms of braking, both bikes have double disc brakes at the front, providing reliable stopping power. The MT-09, however, has additional advanced rider assistance systems such as a quickshifter and traction control, which are not available on the R7. This gives the MT-09 an advantage in terms of convenience and safety features.

When it comes to dimensions and weights, the MT-09 has a longer wheelbase of 1440mm compared to the R7's 1395mm. This may contribute to differences in stability and maneuverability. The MT-09 also has a slightly larger fuel tank capacity of 14 liters compared to the R7's 13 liters.

In terms of weaknesses, the R7 lacks a quickshifter as standard, which would have been a nice addition for smoother gear changes. On the other hand, the MT-09 has no blipper function, which could affect downshifting. The high handlebars on the MT-09 may also provide less feedback to the rider, and the throttle response can be rough. Additionally, the early-regulating ABS on the MT-09 may not provide the same level of control in emergency braking situations.

In conclusion, the Yamaha R7 2021 and the Yamaha MT-09 2020 have their own strengths and weaknesses. The R7 is a good entry-level trackday bike with a high-torque engine and sporty riding position. The MT-09, on the other hand, offers a more powerful engine, advanced rider assistance systems, and a comfortable riding position. Ultimately, the choice between the two models depends on the rider's preferences and intended use.

Pros and Cons in comparison

Pros and Cons in comparison

Yamaha R7 2021

Yamaha R7 2021

Despite the rather idiosyncratic combination of the sensible 73.4 hp mid-range power unit and the extremely aggressive, sporty look, the R7 is by no means a sheep in wolf's clothing. The performance, which is somewhere between the R3 and the R6, turned out to be much stronger in practice than the pure values on paper would suggest, and in terms of geometry, chassis, brakes and tyres, Yamaha's engineers have really done their homework. On top of that, the Yamaha R7 has all the qualities to have a lot of fun out-of-the-box on a compact race track like the Pannoniaring, for example, even without a big investment. But of course it feels better on the country road, and that's where it belongs in the first place, in our opinion. In view of the overall package, the purchase price is more than fairly priced - so it's not a problem that the quickshifter is not included and has to be purchased as an option.

Yamaha MT-09 2020

Yamaha MT-09 2020

Riding fast is possible, but exhausting. The high handlebars are counterproductive on the race track and require a lot of physical effort. The MT-09 can't keep up with the Street Triple R, even with WP suspension.

Powerful engine with plenty of torque

Fine control of traction control

No blipper function

High handlebars give little feedback

Rough throttle response

Early-regulating ABS
