Sun, shade, tree-lined avenues, tunnels or dusk: riders know the problem all too well. While light conditions change constantly, you're often left with a choice between a clear visor or a permanently tinted one that has to be flipped open and closed by hand time and again. Even modern photochromic solutions usually need many seconds, or even minutes, to fully adapt to new light conditions.

With the photochromic IRID "instant" visors, Shark aims to solve this problem once and for all. The patented IRID technology uses an electronically controlled liquid crystal film, powered by an integrated solar panel, that adjusts the tint in less than a second when you roll out of a tunnel straight into blazing daylight. The system runs without a battery, is waterproof, features an integrated anti-fog solution and requires no additional Pinlock insert.

Using the Shark Aeron, we put the potential of this new electrochromic visor technology to the test in the 1000PS Performance Check.

First Impression: Shark Aeron Carbon with IRID "Dark Smoke" Visor

Our test combo was a Shark Aeron Carbon fitted with an IRID "Dark Smoke" visor. The electrochromic racing variant is also compatible with the Shark Race-R Pro, Race-R Pro GP, Aeron GP and Aeron GP FIM helmets. Right out of the box, the IRID visor gives off a premium, high-tech impression. A small solar panel sits centered on the top edge, with the electrochromic liquid crystal film working behind it. Overall, the construction feels a bit bulkier than a conventional visor. That's no surprise, since the extra tech has to fit somewhere. Our measurement showed a weight of 212 grams for the IRID visor compared to 175 grams for the original Shark visor.

Operation, however, remains unchanged. The quick-release mechanism works just as easily and precisely as with the Aeron's stock visor. The visor locks cleanly, opens via the side tab, and can be removed just as easily. Visually, the IRID blends seamlessly into the sporty lines of the Shark Aeron.

That said, the Dark Smoke variant makes no secret of its purpose, even in its lightest state, with light transmission of 38 to 12 percent. Even without direct sunlight, it appears clearly tinted, resembling a moderately darkened racing visor rather than a classic road visor. Once the sun comes out, the IRID darkens visibly further, reaching an almost pitch-black impression.

IRID Technology and Innovation

Classic photochromic visors work through a chemical reaction within the material. Put simply, special molecules change their structure under UV exposure, altering the light transmission of the visor. That's elegant, since no electronics are needed, but it comes with a downside: the reaction depends on temperature and light and doesn't happen instantly. In particular, the switch back from dark to light is perceived as too slow in practice—in tunnels or dark stretches of forest.

IRID takes a different technical approach. Inside the visor sits an electrochromically controlled liquid crystal film. This film doesn't change its light transmission purely through a chemical reaction to UV radiation, but is instead controlled via a small solar panel and a light sensor. When light hits the panel, electrical energy is generated and used directly to drive the liquid crystal layer. This allows the tint to be adjusted significantly faster than with classic photochromic solutions.

The crucial point is that IRID doesn't just react to UV light, but to the actual brightness of the surroundings. That's what makes the difference in situations where normal photochromic systems reach their limits. Entering a tunnel, riding through dappled forest light, or moving from a sunny pit lane into a dark garage—what matters isn't some lab value, but how quickly the eye can work properly again. This is exactly where the electrochromic liquid crystal technology shows its advantage.

On the tested Dark Smoke visor, light transmission ranges between 38% and 12%. That means: even in its lightest state, this visor is not a clear visor, but clearly tinted. Under strong sunlight, the system reduces light transmission further.

The Clear version operates between 64% and 20%, the Blue visor between 29% and 8%. This gives Shark three clearly distinct use profiles: road and everyday use with Clear, race track and strong sun with Dark Smoke, and maximum darkening with an iridium look for Blue.

The energy management is also interesting. Because the system runs on solar power, it needs no battery, no charging port and no operating logic. In an ideal case, the visor is therefore just as uncomplicated as a normal one: mount it, close it, ride. The extra tech is always active as long as light is present. When less light comes in, the drive signal decreases and the visor lightens back up.

Another technical advantage lies in the construction, which uses no additional Pinlock insert. The IRID visor has an integrated anti-fog coating and therefore doesn't need a second inner lens. This means fewer edges, fewer gaps, and fewer surfaces where dirt, moisture or cleaning residue can accumulate. In everyday use, that means: easier to clean, less fiddly to handle, and visually cleaner than a classic visor with a Pinlock insert fitted.

Naturally, this technology (liquid crystal film, solar panel and additional layer structure) comes with a bit of extra weight. Our measurement showed 212 grams for the IRID visor compared to 175 grams for the original Shark visor. That's a 37-gram difference. It's measurable in the lab, but not dominantly noticeable while riding.

A real added value even in everyday use under stable light conditions!

In Practice on the Road: IRID on the Shark Aeron

On the road, the benefit of IRID technology shows up above all where light isn't constant. A wide main road under steady sunshine hardly presents a challenge. Things get interesting in dappled forest light, when the sun flickers through the treetops second by second, during low evening sun, in underpasses, short tunnels, or on country roads that constantly switch between open fields and dark woods. This is exactly where the electrochromic tech plays to its strengths. While classic photochromic visors often still seem to be deciding whether to get lighter or darker, the IRID reacts virtually instantly. Darkening happens in under a second; fully lightening up takes just under three seconds, but starts without any noticeable delay. Especially in rapidly changing light conditions, the difference remains pleasantly perceptible at all times, rather than only becoming visible seconds later.

With the IRID Dark Smoke, however, one has to stay honest: the tested visor is already relatively dark even in its lightest state. For public roads, the Clear variant therefore seems the far more sensible choice. It offers greater everyday flexibility, remains homologated for road use, and still spares the rider from constantly juggling between sunglasses, clear visor and tinted visor. Anyone who commutes regularly, goes on tour, or frequently rides in changing conditions is likely to see the greatest added value here.

On the Shark Aeron itself, handling remains pleasantly familiar. The visor mechanism works precisely, solidly and with a premium feel, exactly as one would expect from a modern racing helmet of this class. The IRID is no harder to mount or operate than the stock visor. In everyday use, the system therefore feels surprisingly unspectacular—and that's meant as a compliment. You put it on, ride off, and after a few minutes forget that additional technology is at work in the visor.

The extra weight of 37 grams that we measured is also barely noticeable in practice. Neither on longer country road stretches nor at higher speeds did the helmet feel more front-heavy. At the same time, there's no additional Pinlock insert to deal with, making cleaning and maintenance noticeably simpler. High-mileage riders in particular will appreciate not having to clean a second lens on the inside with additional edges, retaining pins or gaps.

The IRID Dark Smoke is already relatively dark even in its lightest state.

For public roads, the Clear variant therefore seems the far more sensible choice.

On the Race Track: IRID on the Shark Aeron

On the race track, however, the Dark Smoke IRID gets really interesting. Pit lane, grid, shadow zones behind grandstands, low sun at a corner exit, or a turn that starts under overcast skies and ends in sunshine: this is exactly where the benefit shows. You're not riding with a visor suited to only one lighting mood, but with a system that constantly adapts to its surroundings.

What's particularly nice is that there's less to manage. No second visor sitting in the tire warmer rack. No frantic switching right before a turn. No half-open visor at the pit entrance because the sun just disappeared behind a cloud. The IRID works quietly in the background, while the mind is free to focus on more important things: braking point, line, grip level and traffic.

Especially on tracks with frequent light changes, the fast reaction time really pays off. Anyone who has ever shot from a dark section straight into a bright part of the track under low evening sun knows how unpleasant a few seconds of limited vision can be. The IRID obviously can't outsmart the physics of the human eye, but it does reduce the extra strain caused by a visor that's permanently too light or too dark.

Still, the Dark Smoke visor remains an uncompromising racing part. For sunny trackdays, the tuning feels spot-on and matches the character of the Shark Aeron. Under overcast skies, rain, or later dusk, however, the base tint can already feel borderline too dark. Anyone using the Aeron purely as a track helmet will find this far easier to live with than someone riding the same helmet on the road every day.

More technology, significantly less hassle!

Conclusion: IRID Technology on the Shark Aeron

The Shark IRID visor isn't a cheap accessory, nor is it a must-buy for every Aeron rider. It's a technical statement with real practical benefit and a clear target group. Anyone who only rides in stable, fine weather probably doesn't need this solution. Anyone who regularly rides in changing light conditions will recognize the benefit of this technology after just the first few kilometers. On the Shark Aeron, the system feels cleanly integrated. The visor mechanism remains precise, the quick-change function works as usual, and visually the IRID fits excellently with the sporty lines of the helmet. The biggest point of criticism remains the price: 390 euros for Clear, 420 euros for Dark Smoke or Blue is a statement. However, this is put into perspective somewhat when you consider that high-quality photochromic visors without electrochromic instant reaction are also not exactly bargains. IRID thus offers a noticeable technological added value for a comparatively manageable surcharge. At the end of the day, IRID is far more than a technical gimmick and solves a problem that has accompanied riders for years. What remains open is only how the feature holds up after many years of intensive use. The first impression, in any case, is convincing.
