Sun, shade, tree-lined avenues, tunnels or dusk: riders know the problem well. As lighting conditions constantly change, you're often left with a choice between a clear visor or a permanently tinted one that has to be flipped open and closed by hand over and over again. Even modern photochromic solutions usually need many seconds or even minutes to fully adapt to new lighting conditions. Self-tinting visors come in two types: photochromic ones, which react to UV light and are correspondingly sluggish — and electrochromic ones like IRID, which switch electrically.

With the photochromic IRID "instant" visors, Shark aims to solve this problem at its root. The patented IRID technology uses an electronically controlled liquid-crystal film, powered via an integrated solar panel, that adjusts the tint in under a second when you roll straight out of a tunnel into glaring daylight. The system requires no battery, is waterproof, features an integrated anti-fog solution, and needs no additional Pinlock insert.

Using the Shark Aeron, we test in the 1000PS Performance Check what potential this new electrochromic visor technology holds.

First Impression: Shark Aeron Carbon with IRID "Dark Smoke" Visor

Our test combo was a Shark Aeron Carbon with an IRID "Dark Smoke" visor. This electrochromic racing variant is also compatible with the Shark Race-R Pro, Race-R Pro GP, Aeron GP and Aeron GP FIM helmets. Right out of the box, the IRID visor conveys a high-quality, high-tech impression. At the top edge, centered, sits a small solar panel, behind which the electrochromic liquid-crystal film does its work. Overall, the construction feels somewhat bulkier than a conventional visor. That's no surprise, since the extra technology has to fit somewhere. Our measurement showed a weight of 212 grams for the IRID visor versus 175 grams for the original Shark visor.

Operation, however, remains unchanged. The quick-release mechanism works just as easily and precisely as on the Aeron's standard visor. The visor locks cleanly, opens via the side tab, and is just as easy to remove. Visually, the IRID blends seamlessly into the sporty lines of the Shark Aeron.

However, the Dark Smoke variant makes no secret of its purpose even in its lightest state, with a light transmission of 38 to 12 percent. Even without direct sunlight, it appears noticeably tinted, more reminiscent of a medium-dark racing visor than a classic road visor. Once the sun comes out, the IRID darkens further, achieving an almost pitch-black impression.

IRID Technology and Innovation

Classic photochromic visors work through a chemical reaction in the material. Put simply, special molecules change their structure under UV influence, altering the light transmission of the visor. This is elegant because no electronics are needed, but it has a drawback: the reaction is temperature- and light-dependent and doesn't happen instantly. In particular, the switch back from dark to light is perceived as too slow in practice — in tunnels or dark forest stretches.

IRID takes a different technical approach. Inside the visor sits an electrochromically controlled liquid-crystal film. This film doesn't change its light transmission purely through a chemical reaction to UV radiation, but is instead controlled via a small solar panel and a light sensor. When light hits the panel, electrical energy is generated and used directly to drive the liquid-crystal layer. This allows the tint to be adjusted significantly faster than with classic photochromic solutions.

The decisive point is: IRID doesn't just react to UV light, but to the actual ambient brightness. That's what makes the difference in situations where normal photochromic systems reach their limits. When entering a tunnel, riding through dappled forest light, or moving from a sunny pit lane into a dark garage, what matters isn't some lab value but how quickly the eye can work properly again. This is precisely where the electrochromic liquid-crystal technology plays out its advantage.

On the tested Dark Smoke visor, light transmission ranges between 38% and 12%. That means: even in its lightest state, the visor is not a clear visor, but noticeably tinted. Under strong sunlight, the system further reduces light transmission.

The Clear version operates between 64% and 20%, the Blue visor between 29% and 8%. With this, Shark clearly targets three different use cases: road and everyday riding with Clear, race track and strong sun with Dark Smoke, and maximum darkening with iridium looks with Blue.

The energy balance is also interesting. Because the system runs on solar power, it needs no battery, no charging port and no control logic. In the best case, the visor is thus as uncomplicated as a normal visor: fit it, close it, ride. The extra technology is always active as long as there's light present. When less light comes in, the drive signal decreases and the visor brightens again.

Another technical advantage lies in the construction without an additional Pinlock insert. The IRID visor has an integrated anti-fog coating and therefore needs no second inner lens. This means fewer edges, fewer gaps, and fewer surfaces where dirt, moisture or cleaning residue can collect. In everyday use, this translates to easier cleaning, less sensitive handling, and a visually cleaner look than a classic visor fitted with a Pinlock.

Of course, you pay for this technology (liquid-crystal film, solar panel and additional layer structure) with a bit of extra weight. Our measurement showed 212 grams for the IRID visor versus 175 grams for the original Shark visor — a difference of 37 grams. Measurable in the lab, but not dominantly noticeable while riding.

In Practice on the Road: IRID on the Shark Aeron

On the road, the benefit of IRID technology shows up especially where light isn't constant. A wide highway under steady sunshine hardly poses a challenge. It gets interesting in dappled forest light, when the sun flickers through the treetops second by second, with a low evening sun, in underpasses, short tunnels, or on country roads that constantly alternate between open fields and dark forest. It's precisely in these situations that the electrochromic technology shows its strength. While classic photochromic visors are often still deciding whether to get lighter or darker, the IRID reacts practically instantly. Darkening happens in under a second; fully brightening takes just under three seconds but starts without a noticeable delay. Especially with rapidly changing light conditions, the difference remains pleasantly perceptible at all times, rather than only becoming visible seconds later.

With the IRID Dark Smoke, though, we have to be honest: the tested visor is already relatively dark even in its lightest state. For public roads, the Clear variant therefore seems the far more sensible choice. It offers greater everyday flexibility, remains homologated for road use, and still spares the rider from having to constantly juggle between sunglasses, a clear visor and a tinted visor. Anyone who commutes regularly, goes touring, or frequently rides in changing conditions will probably see the biggest benefit here.

On the Shark Aeron itself, operation remains pleasantly familiar. The visor mechanism works precisely, solidly and with a high-quality feel, exactly what you'd expect from a modern racing helmet in this class. The IRID is neither trickier to fit nor harder to operate than the standard visor. In everyday use, the system therefore feels surprisingly unremarkable — and that's meant as a compliment. You get on, ride off, and after a few minutes forget that extra technology is at work in the visor.

The extra weight of 37 grams we measured is also barely noticeable in practice. Neither on longer country-road stretches nor at higher speeds did we get the impression of a top-heavier helmet. At the same time, the additional Pinlock insert is no longer needed, making cleaning and maintenance significantly simpler. High-mileage riders in particular will appreciate not having to clean a second inner lens with extra edges, retaining pins, or gaps.

The IRID Dark Smoke is already relatively dark even in its lightest state.

For public roads, the Clear variant therefore seems the far more sensible choice.

On the Race Track: IRID on the Shark Aeron

On the race track, though, is where the Dark Smoke IRID really gets interesting. Pit lane, grid, shadowed zones behind grandstands, a low sun at a corner exit, or a turn that starts under cloudy skies and ends in sunshine: this is exactly where the benefit lies. You're not riding with a visor suited to just one single lighting mood, but with a system that continuously adapts to its surroundings.

Particularly pleasant is the reduced hassle. No second visor sitting in the tire-warmer rack. No frantic swapping just before a turn. No half-open visor at the pit entrance because the sun just disappeared behind a cloud. The IRID works discreetly in the background, while the rider's head can focus on more important things: braking point, line, grip level and traffic.

Especially on tracks with frequent light changes, the fast reaction time makes itself felt. Anyone who has shot from a dark section straight into a bright stretch of track under a low evening sun knows how unpleasant a few seconds of limited vision can be. IRID obviously can't outsmart the physics of the human eye, but it does reduce the additional strain caused by a visor that's permanently too light or too dark.

The Dark Smoke visor nevertheless remains an uncompromising racing part. For sunny trackdays, the tuning feels coherent and fitting for the character of the Shark Aeron. Under overcast skies, in rain, or at late dusk, however, the base tint can already feel borderline too dark. Anyone using the Aeron purely as a race-track helmet will live with that far better than someone riding the same helmet on the road every day.

Conclusion: IRID Technology on the Shark Aeron

The Shark IRID visor isn't a cheap accessory, nor is it a mandatory purchase for every Aeron rider. It's a technical statement with real practical benefit and a clear target group. Anyone who only rides in stable, sunny weather probably doesn't need this solution. Anyone who regularly rides in changing light conditions will recognize the benefit of this technology after just the first few kilometers. On the Shark Aeron, the system feels cleanly integrated. The visor mechanism stays precise, the quick-release works as usual, and visually the IRID fits the sporty lines of the helmet excellently. The biggest criticism remains the price: 390 euros for Clear, 420 euros for Dark Smoke or Blue is a bold ask. That said, it's put somewhat into perspective when you consider that high-quality photochromic visors without electrochromic instant reaction aren't cheap either. For a comparatively manageable surcharge, IRID thus offers a noticeable technological benefit. Bottom line: IRID is far more than a technical gimmick and solves a problem that has accompanied riders for years. The only open question is how the feature holds up after many years of intensive use. The first impression, in any case, is convincing.

Is the Shark IRID a self-tinting or a photochromic visor?

It's both, though it technically works differently from a classic photochromic visor. Shark itself lists the IRID visors as photochromic instant visors, but the tint isn't produced by a chemical UV reaction in the material — instead, it comes from an electrochromically controlled liquid-crystal film with a solar panel at the top edge of the visor and a light sensor. This means the self-tinting visor reacts to actual ambient brightness rather than just UV radiation. There's no switch, no charging port and no control logic.

What does a self-tinting photochromic visor from Shark cost?
