DNA High Performance Filter für BMW R 1300 GS: warum Luft und Öl zählen

Air filters and oil filters aren't exactly the sexiest tuning parts in the traditional sense. They’re barely visible, rarely a topic of conversation at gatherings, yet they sit at two critical points of the engine. The air filter determines how clean and resistance-free the engine breathes its combustion air. The oil filter decides how clean the lubrication circuit remains when the Boxer is under load, heat, and high revs.

This is particularly intriguing with the BMW R 1300 GS, as the 1,300cc Boxer is no weak starting point. For the R 1300 GS, BMW claims 145 horsepower at 7,750 rpm, 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, 1,300 cc displacement, and Euro 5+ as the technical foundation. The R 1300 GS Adventure shares these core stats, albeit with a different vehicle concept and greater travel aspirations. The new R 1300 RT also uses the 1,300cc Boxer with 145 hp and 149 Nm, but in a touring environment with different fairing, usage, and sound dynamics.

That’s why this 1000PS Performance Check isn’t about turning the GS into a superbike. It focuses on the straightforward question: Does quality filter technology make a noticeable difference on a modern BMW Boxer? What are the technical advantages, and what should you be mindful of in everyday use?

First Impressions: DNA Air Filter, Stage-2 Cover, and DNA Oil Filter

Upon unboxing, the DNA setup doesn't come across as a showpiece but rather as a functional performance enhancement. The DNA air filter makes its impact not through flashy decor but through material, filter surface, sealing, and airflow management. With the Stage-2 kit, it's not just the filter that's in focus, but the combination of the filter and airbox cover. The manufacturer labels the kit as the DNA Air Filter & Cover Combo P-BM13E24-S2-COMBO.

The feel of the two air filter components, also available separately as the DNA Air Filters Set P-BM13E23-01_SET, matches the premium claim. Technically interesting is the special 45-degree design of the filter elements. According to DNA, this geometry is aligned with the airflow characteristics of the stock airbox and aims to direct the air as efficiently as possible towards the intake tract. For the DNA air filter for the BMW R 1300 GS, the manufacturer also uses four layers of cotton fabric and a factory-tuned oil treatment. To seal against the stock airbox, the polyurethane sealing surfaces are treated with the supplied DNA Sealing Grease. The stated filter efficiency is 98 to 99 percent. Combined with the DNA Stage-2 airbox cover, the airflow is said to increase by 41.20 percent compared to the standard BMW solution.

The DNA Oil Filter DNA-162 is the less noticeable part of the package but perhaps more crucial for everyday servicing. It appears in the R-1300 family, including the R 1300 RT and R 1300 GS Adventure, with a height of 62 mm, a diameter of 56 mm, cartridge design, and applicability for road, offroad, and race use. Here, it's not about show but about clean oil flow, reliable filtration, and a replacement part that is handled during any oil change.

DNA Stage-2 Technology: More Air, Optimized Intake Path, Enhanced Performance

The DNA Stage-2 Kit is not just another filter insert. It significantly alters the airflow by replacing the stock plastic intake area and OEM intake channel. DNA promises that the Stage-2 Kit not only delivers a throatier intake sound but also a noticeably freer airflow. When paired with the appropriate DNA air filter, airflow, power, torque, and throttle response are all expected to improve, while maintaining high filter efficiency.

The key metric here is airflow. Stock at 6,024 l/min versus 8,500 l/min with the DNA Stage 2 represents a claimed increase of 41.20 percent according to DNA. This isn't just a feeling—it's a solid figure. However, an airflow value does not automatically translate to a dyno chart at the rear wheel. More air primarily means less resistance in the intake tract. Whether this results in more torque, more power, or just a more direct throttle response depends on factors like load, rpm, temperature, engine management, and also the fuel mapping.

DNA itself notes that very impressive results are possible with customized fuel and engine tuning. This is where the honest limits of our performance check lie. We've deliberately stuck to a plug-and-play setup, testing the Stage-2 Kit without individual ECU tuning, which likely matches the use case for many ambitious road riders. However, those looking to fully exploit the potential of the freer intake path will need professional tuning.

The manufacturer's or distributor's claim of around an extra 5 HP in the mid-range fits this technical logic but should not be read as an independent 1000PS dyno figure. Such a gain is more noticeable on the road in terms of pull and acceleration from mid-range rpm rather than whether the table ends with 145 or 150 HP.

DNA High Performance Filter Functionality

DNA FCd and Cotton Filters: The Technology Behind the Filtration

DNA uses a multi-layered, oiled, and reportedly flame-retardant cotton medium with FCd design technology for its high-performance air filter. But the concept is about more than just maximizing the filter surface area. For the BMW R 1300 GS, DNA developed filter elements with a special 45-degree geometry. This was based on an analysis of the stock airbox, which revealed that the intake air follows this exact flow path. The shape of the filter elements was therefore specifically tailored to match the original's airflow, directing the air as efficiently and evenly as possible towards the intake tract. Especially with a modern Boxer engine featuring ride-by-wire and sensitive injection systems, it's not just the volume of air intake that matters but its controlled flow. A well-directed airflow can positively influence throttle response, responsiveness, and torque development.

At the same time, maintenance is crucial. An oiled cotton filter requires careful cleaning and regular re-oiling to maintain its filtering properties over time. A neglected sports air filter is not a performance part anymore but a risk. For the Stage-2 set, a service is recommended every 15,000 km—or sooner in particularly dusty conditions—using the DNA Service Kit DSK-3001 for cleaning and re-oiling.

DNA Oil Filter DNA-162 for BMW R 1300 GS

DNA Oil Filter DNA-162: Unassuming Part with Big Impact

The DNA-162 oil filter doesn't provide a louder airbox or a noticeable boost when you throttle up—its role is less about excitement but no less important. Engine oil contains abrasives, combustion residues, and tiny particles that the filter must reliably capture without unnecessarily restricting oil flow. Especially during long rides, high oil temperatures, spirited road riding, or off-road dust, this is no minor concern.

DNA describes its premium motorcycle oil filters as being designed for high oil flow, good filtration, OEM standards, and compatibility with synthetic, conventional, and semi-synthetic oils. Additionally, DNA mentions a specially designed bypass or pressure relief valve depending on the application. Practically speaking, this means the oil filter isn't a tuning part in the traditional sense but a quality component in the maintenance schedule. You're not purchasing horsepower here, but engine protection, clean oil flow, and peace of mind during service.

From a price-performance perspective, the oil filter is the most rational choice in the entire package. An oil filter is required during an oil change anyway. If the DNA-162 is priced similarly to other high-quality brand filters, it isn't a luxury upgrade but a conscious decision for quality.

Installation on BMW R 1300 GS: Plug-and-Play

The modification itself isn't rocket science, but it's no time for carelessness either. When changing the air filter on the R 1300 GS, cleanliness trumps speed. Once the airbox is open, no dirt should fall onto the clean side. This is exactly what the clearly laid-out installation instructions emphasize. The stock air filters and covers are removed, and the original plastic covers are not reused in the Stage-2 upgrade. Next, the DNA filters, which are greased at the seals, and the Stage-2 airbox cover are installed. The screws should not be overtightened.

Here's an important reminder: No matter how good a sport air filter is—if dust or dirt enters the intake tract during installation, you've defeated your own purpose. Those who work carefully here will have a clean, reversible performance enhancement after the modification. Those who rush risk the most expensive component on the motorcycle.

As for the oil filter, it's standard service procedure. The DNA-162 is part of the oil change, so it requires the correct oil, proper level, clean sealing surface, and specified torque. Again, it's not the filter that makes for a good service, but the clean service that makes the filter effective.

Road Test Impressions (Stock Trim): A Bit More Low-End, No Miracles Up Top

Our test rider Arlo deliberately stuck with the plug-and-play setup. No custom tuning, no attempt to turn an adventure tourer into a race bike. The question was: Do you feel any difference on the road when the R 1300 GS breathes more freely?

Arlo's summary was dry and quite spot-on: "You feel a small boost in the low-end. No brutal hit, not a completely different engine, but a hint more willingness when you pull from low revs. Especially when accelerating out of tight corners, casually overtaking, or powering out of a turn, the Boxer feels a bit more awake. Not more aggressive, not more jittery, just a tad more immediate."

The second point is the intake sound. It's more noticeable, but not embarrassingly so. Arlo described it the way you would after a good round on the road: "The subtle intake noise is pretty cool. That's where the charm lies. Not in noise, but in mechanical breathing. You can hear that there's more happening up front under the tank without turning the GS into a noise box."

It's important to set expectations: The Stage-2 Kit doesn't automatically make the BMW faster in terms of significantly higher top speed or a spectacular power increase. It makes it feel more lively in normal riding if you're open to such nuances. Those familiar with the Boxer and who pay attention to throttle response, intake tone, and richness in the lower to mid-range will notice the difference.

Sound and Legality: Not Loud, but Also Not Legal

On the road, the louder airbox noise is largely absorbed into the overall soundscape. Tires, wind, the Boxer engine, helmet, exhaust, traffic: the GS doesn't turn into a rolling loudspeaker. This is a pleasant finding, as many open intake solutions can quickly sound cheap acoustically. Here, the impression remains mature.

Nevertheless, the open or modified intake area is not automatically harmless. DNA markets the Stage-2 Kit as "race use only." This sets the key point for road use. Whether you should run the open cover on public roads depends not only on personal noise perception but also on approval, control, insurance, and local legal regulations.

Our impression is that it doesn't become a noise box. However, an observant officer, possibly with GS experience themselves, could theoretically notice the modified intake tract. This is the flip side of a modification that brings more air and intake character but isn't classified as street-legal comfort equipment.

Target Audience: DNA P-BM13E24-S2-COMBO, P-BM13E23-01_SET, and DNA-162

The three DNA products have different aims and therefore appeal to different riders.

The DNA Oil Filter (DNA-162) is the most sensible and straightforward solution in the package. It's an essential part of every service and targets riders who value quality in maintenance parts. Its benefit doesn't lie in increased power but in a high-quality component for long-term engine protection. High-mileage riders, touring enthusiasts, and GS or RT owners clocking up serious annual distances will find this to be the right choice.

The DNA Air Filter (P-BM13E23-01_SET) is the next step for riders looking to give their Boxer engine a higher-quality filtration system. It replaces the stock filter, is reusable, and can be cleaned. At the same time, it allows for freer airflow, making it suitable for riders who want to technically optimize their machine without deeply altering the engine's character. Regular riders who take maintenance seriously will find this a worthwhile quality upgrade without significant drawbacks.

The DNA Stage-2 Kit (P-BM13E24-S2-COMBO) is aimed at a much more specific audience. This is no longer about maintenance or replacement but about performance. Riders who want to let their Boxer engine breathe more freely, enjoy a sportier intake sound, and get the most out of their motorcycle will find this the most exciting solution. The kit is particularly appealing to ambitious riders and competitive racers who plan to have their bikes custom-tuned anyway.

The Stage-2 Kit is less suitable for riders who want to keep their BMW as close to stock as possible or prioritize maximum discretion. For these riders, the DNA Air Filter and DNA Oil Filter are the more sensible choices. They offer high-quality filtration technology and focus on quality and longevity rather than maximum performance.
