KTM 390 SMC R vs 690 SMC R - Which Supermoto Makes More Sense?

With the introduction of the KTM 390 SMC R in 2025, KTM re-enters the small-capacity supermoto segment for the first time in a long while - and this raises a central question: does anyone still need the big 690 SMC R at all? The 690 has been considered the benchmark in the single-cylinder supermoto segment for over a decade. But with the new, modern and surprisingly mature 390, it now faces serious competition - from within its own house.

This test clarifies just how different the two models really are and which machine makes more sense for which type of rider today.

Although both models sport the typical KTM supermoto look, they feel completely different.

The KTM 390 SMC R feels immediately light, playful and inviting. It's compact, nimble and feels almost fidgety in its eagerness to move. A bike that actively motivates its riders and encourages them to try new things. Due to its basis in the 390 Duke, we find a relatively high tank hump that doesn't allow you to position yourself directly behind the handlebar. Beginners just starting out in the supermoto world, however, shouldn't really be bothered by this.

The KTM 690 SMC R, on the other hand, leaves no doubt about its character even at a standstill. The big single vibrates with life, the sound is powerful and the machine feels serious. The riding position with the completely flat seat also makes this immediately clear. This bike isn't ridden - it wants to be led. Its presence conveys: I am no toy.

Here the paths of the two supermotos diverge fundamentally. The 390 SMC R offers 45 hp and 39 Nm. That sounds unspectacular, but on the road this setup works excellently. The LC4c engine revs cleanly, is very well metered, and always conveys control. Riders can use it fully - a decisive factor for pure riding pleasure. It's generous with mistakes, and throttle response remains friendly at all times.

The 690 SMC R is a completely different story: 79 hp and 73 Nm make it the strongest series-production, street-legal single-cylinder supermoto in the world - a title reclaimed from Ducati in 2025. Every stab of the throttle becomes an event. The torque hits hard, the engine character is raw and uncompromising. Whoever rides the 690 experiences fascination and respect at the same time - KTM has shown for years just how radical a single can be.

On paper, the weights of the two models are surprisingly close. In practice, however, the 390 feels significantly more playful. The KTM 390 SMC R relies on WP APEX suspension components, generous travel and a pleasantly accessible setup. Handling is intuitive, corner-hungry and forgiving of mistakes. On tight country roads or in urban environments, it fully exploits its agility.

The KTM 690 SMC R, on the other hand, with its WP APEX 48mm fork, Pro-Lever linkage and premium Brembo setup, is designed to be significantly sportier. It demands more skill, more precision and clear commands. In return, it delivers enormous stability, razor-sharp turn-in and maximum performance. The 690 rewards - but it demands.

According to expert Martin Bauer, modern small-displacement bikes are now capable of a great deal. They offer agility, low weight and an accessible entry point. Less experienced riders in particular benefit from the good-natured power delivery of the 390 SMC R. Long term, however, Bauer sees the desire for more power emerging once riders develop routine. Small displacements are naturally limited in their peak output. Anyone wanting to ride more intensively and extract the maximum from a single-cylinder will eventually gravitate toward the 690 - even though the 390 remains fun.

The price difference is significant:

That means the big SMC R costs nearly double. The premium is reflected in performance, components and long-term market positioning. The 690 is an icon and remains the ultimate choice for experienced supermoto riders.

The 390 SMC R, in turn, opens the door to a completely new target group: young riders, A2 license holders, returning riders and people seeking maximum fun with minimal intimidation. It's not only cheaper, but also significantly more accessible in its riding behavior.

The short answer: Yes - but not for everyone.

The KTM 390 SMC R impressively proves that fun doesn't depend on power. It's light, playful, modern and offers a supermoto experience that makes more sense for many riders than brutal power. On tight country roads, in city traffic or as a sporty entry point, it is often even the better choice.

The KTM 690 SMC R nonetheless remains relevant. Anyone seeking maximum intensity, pure single-cylinder violence and an overall sporty performance will find it exclusively here. The 690 has its place - but today it's a more specific one than before.

So do you need it? Only if you know exactly what you want: raw power, uncompromising performance and a bike that demands experience. For everyone else: the new 390 SMC R doesn't make its big sister obsolete - but it makes it less necessary than ever before.
