During a digital presentation, KTM unveiled more details about the long-anticipated new models based on the current 390 single-cylinder engine. Financial turbulence within the KTM Group had previously delayed the launch of these new bikes, but now it seems that things are finally getting underway. The announced motorcycles – 390 Adventure R, 390 Adventure X, 390 Enduro R, and 390 SMC-R – expand the existing lineup in the A2-compliant segment. The presentation focused on the technical distinctions within the model family and the positioning of each variant for road use, travel, off-road adventures, and supermoto riding.

All models are built on the third generation of KTM's small platform and, like previous 390 series, are manufactured in collaboration with Bajaj at the Indian plant. Initial market launches have already taken place in India and North America, with the European rollout imminent and expected to begin shortly according to KTM. This article delves into the announced models, focusing on technical specifications, equipment details, and targeted audiences.
The Renowned Duke Single Stays - 390 Engine Remains Technically Unchanged
At the heart of all new 390 models lies the latest generation of the LC4c engine, a liquid-cooled single-cylinder with a displacement of 399 cc. This engine is utilized in an identical configuration across all four models, including the airbox, exhaust system, cooling system, and transmission, delivering 45 HP at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The electronic foundation, such as ride-by-wire and traction control, mirrors that of the Duke. Differences arise only in the software configuration—for example, in the available ride modes or the specific calibration of traction control and ABS for each model. The final drive ratios have also been adjusted to suit the respective tire sizes and use cases. Thus, while the engine remains technically unchanged, the dynamic riding characteristics, which influence handling and performance, vary by model due to the chosen peripherals.

For cost reasons, the engine is not specially configured for each 390 model but is carried over unchanged from the Duke. However, the integrated electronics are intended to highlight the differences between the models.
KTM 390 Duke vs. Adventure R & Co. - Shared Platform, but Significant Structural Differences
Even though all four new models are based on the same fundamental platform as the KTM 390 Duke, their construction differs in several key aspects. While components like the engine, radiator, and certain frame elements are carried over, KTM opts for unique solutions in chassis and ergonomics for the off-road and supermoto models. The Adventure, Enduro, and SMC-R feature an altered steering head angle to enhance stability during off-road riding, and a completely newly designed, bolted tubular steel subframe—as opposed to the Duke's cast rear end. The swingarm of the Adventure models is also reinforced and extended, with a closed design to prevent dirt accumulation. Ergonomics vary by model, with either a more upright or expansive posture, and the seat, handlebar position, and footpeg mounts are adjusted accordingly. Overall, the similarities with the Duke remain at a basic level, while the structure and suspension geometry are tailored to specific use cases.

KTM 390 Adventure R - Most Off-Road Capable Model of the Lineup
With the 390 Adventure R, KTM expands its existing adventure lineup with a model explicitly oriented towards off-road use within the A2 category. Compared to the previous 390 Adventure, numerous changes have been made to shift its application more towards off-road terrain. These include a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel with spoked rims and tube tires, fully adjustable suspension with long travel, and an upright seating position with an 870 mm seat height. The plastic bodywork has also been made more robust, and the fuel tank retains its 14-liter capacity. Visually, the model stands out with its orange-painted trellis frame, a design feature traditionally reserved by KTM for its R models. Technically, the bike differs with specific settings for ABS and traction control, as well as the available off-road mode. The main focus is on versatility for riders who want to tackle both road and off-road sections.

The KTM 390 Adventure R is designed to combine strong off-road performance with touring capability.
KTM 390 Adventure X - Beginner-Friendly Touring Enduro with Road Focus
The 390 Adventure X targets a cost-conscious and accessible audience with a focus on road use and occasional forays onto unpaved paths. Unlike the R version, the X features a lower suspension (seat height 850 mm), simpler non-adjustable suspension components, and 19- and 17-inch cast wheels. The electronics have also been pared down—an LCD replaces the TFT display, and ride modes and traction control are omitted. Nonetheless, the Adventure X remains attractive as a lightweight touring and everyday bike, thanks to the renowned 390 engine and moderate geometry. KTM positions this model clearly below the R version in terms of equipment and price, yet it offers a visually similar appearance with a comparable tank shape and front fairing. Thus, the X serves as a bridge for beginners who want to combine adventure design with more road-oriented functionality.

The 390 Adventure X focuses on offering a good value for money and is geared towards touring on paved roads.

KTM 390 Enduro R - New Dual-Sport Option with Serious Off-Road Ambitions
With the 390 Enduro R, KTM introduces a model in the A2 category that is clearly positioned as a dual-sport motorcycle. Unlike the Adventure variant, the Enduro R focuses more on off-road capability while maintaining road legality. The most striking feature is the chunky Karoo-4 tires, which are at the upper limit of road legality, along with the suspension, which is tuned specifically for off-road use. The smaller tank (9 liters) and compact front with a reduced dashboard are designed to minimize weight in the upper area and enhance maneuverability in technical terrain. The Enduro R uses a unique ABS configuration that allows the system to be completely deactivated at the push of a button—both front and rear. The new 4.2-inch TFT display maintains the functionality level of the larger Adventure R display but is more compactly integrated into the cockpit. Overall, the 390 Enduro R is aimed at riders seeking a lightweight, low-maintenance vehicle for legal road connectivity and regular off-road use.

The KTM 390 Enduro R is not only aimed at beginners but also serves as a genuine dual-sport bike with a strong off-road focus, bridging the gap to the EXC models.
Positioning the 390 Enduro R Between EXC-F and Adventure Bikes
The 390 Enduro R expands KTM's offerings in the lower to mid-displacement range, filling a gap between purebred competition enduros like the EXC-F 350 and practical adventure bikes like the 390 Adventure. Unlike the EXC-F, the 390 Enduro R is not designed for racing but as a dual-sport motorcycle with a broader range of uses. This is exemplified by its reduced maintenance requirements, with service intervals of 10,000 kilometers, compared to the EXC-F which recommends a top-end service after about 90 operational hours. Thus, the 390 Enduro R offers a compromise between off-road capability, everyday usability, and accessibility. At the same time, it is positioned below the 690 Enduro R in terms of both price and technical complexity. For those transitioning from smaller models or returning riders with off-road ambitions, it represents one of the few options in this segment that is street-legal while also being off-road capable, without relying on a high-performance enduro.
KTM 390 SMC-R - New A2 Supermoto
The 390 SMC-R adds to the new model lineup with an A2-compliant Supermoto that has a clear road focus and a sporty design. Featuring 17-inch spoked wheels and Power 6 street tires, the model visually and dynamically aligns itself with its larger sibling, the 690 SMC-R. The ergonomics are more spacious compared to the 390 Duke, with a higher seat height that allows greater freedom of movement—especially for taller riders or those who actively shift their weight. Notable features include the shorter Supermoto-style fender and the large front brake disc. Technically, the model shares many components with the 390 Enduro R, including the frame, tank, and 4.2-inch TFT display. However, the software setup differs with specific ride modes (Street and Sport) and a Supermoto ABS configuration. The control unit has also been redesigned, with a central joystick replacing the previous button layout for simplified navigation. This expands KTM's Supermoto range with a lighter and more accessible option below the established 690 series.

KTM 690 Enduro R & 690 SMC-R Update 2025 - What We Know So Far
During the presentation, upcoming updates for the 690 Enduro R and 690 SMC-R were also highlighted. Although the official unveiling is still pending, initial details have already been revealed: both models will feature a color TFT display similar to the new 390 models. This display offers multiple layout options, smartphone connectivity, and navigation integration. The new LED dual headlight, as used in the 390 series, will also be part of the upgraded equipment. KTM emphasizes that many control elements and software features between the 390 and 690 are becoming increasingly aligned to ensure a more consistent user experience across the model range.
KTM 390 Models 2025 - Availability & Market Launch
For the European market, the rollout of the new KTM 390 models will be gradual and country-specific. While initial units are already available in India and North America, distribution in Europe is now gradually taking place through the respective KTM branches and importers. The exact availability varies by country, so KTM refers to local marketing managers for specific delivery dates. In Europe, the model range will be delivered in a version oriented towards Indian specifications but adapted—such as with a modified side stand and specific equipment packages. Demo and test motorcycles will be made available to dealers gradually, with the 390 Adventure X potentially being integrated into fleets with some delay.
At 1000PS, we expect to receive the first 390 test bikes from KTM by July 2025. So stay tuned for upcoming test videos and comparisons.
