Power comes from a dual battery system with two 72V 28Ah lithium-ion batteries, each weighing about 12.4 kilograms. Charging time is approximately three hours per battery or six hours for both simultaneously, but the fast-charging function further reduces this time. Depending on riding style, the range can reach up to 95 kilometers. With a curb weight of 128 kilograms, hydraulic disc brakes with ABS, and a seat height of 810 millimeters, the NIU offers solid specs for urban use. The price is currently just under 4,500 Euros.

From the first few meters, it becomes clear: the NIU NQiX 500 isn't just a cheap entry-level electric scooter, but a well-thought-out mode of transportation with real everyday usability. Particularly impressive is the storage space under the seat, which is large enough to fit a full-face helmet. This is a rarity among electric scooters, as batteries are often placed in storage areas. NIU takes a different approach here: the two batteries are positioned deep in the footboard, which not only creates space but also favorably shifts the scooter's center of gravity. As a result, the NQiX 500 rides stable, maneuverable, and pleasantly agile—perfect for urban traffic.

A minor drawback arises from the battery positioning. The footboard sits relatively high, which can result in a tight knee angle for taller riders. At a height of around 1.75 meters, the riding experience remains comfortable, but beyond that, depending on leg length, there might be contact with the handlebars, especially when maneuvering or riding at low speeds. Otherwise, the scooter impresses with its pleasantly quiet drive. The motor runs nearly silently, which is relaxing on the one hand, but can also lead to increased inattentiveness from pedestrians and cyclists, as they might not notice the scooter.

The brakes leave a solid impression. Thanks to standard ABS, the scooter remains well-controllable even in wet conditions. The suspension is generally firm but not uncomfortable. On rough roads, it can feel a bit stiff, but compared to other e-scooters in this class, the NQiX 500 performs above average.

In terms of build quality, NIU delivers an impressively solid overall package. The panel gaps appear well-finished, the materials feel premium, and the plastic coverings do not look cheap. Especially practical are the modular panels, which are not only suitable for individual design customizations but can also be quickly and easily replaced in case of damage. While riding, the scooter remains quiet and doesn't rattle—a clear sign of good assembly quality. Only on very poor road conditions is a slight rattle from the windshield audible, but this remains entirely within an acceptable range. Overall, the NQiX 500 gives the impression of a sturdily built and practical vehicle for everyday use.

Another highlight of the NQiX 500 is its versatile riding mode system, which significantly impacts the riding experience. The Wet Mode is tailored for rainy conditions and noticeably reduces throttle response. The scooter accelerates smoothly yet still reaches speeds over 60 km/h, making it fully functional for city traffic. More restrictive is the E-Safe Mode, which limits the top speed to 28 km/h. While this mode is hardly practical for everyday use, it can be useful in exceptional situations, such as when the battery is very low or on campgrounds.

The Dynamic Mode impressed the most in tests. It offers a balanced combination of performance, efficiency, and range. With a top speed of about 68 km/h according to the speedometer, it allows for brisk travel without overly taxing the battery. For those seeking maximum power, the Sport Mode unleashes the full 100 km/h. Additionally, there's an E-Boost button on the right handlebar, allowing the scooter to accelerate up to 120 km/h temporarily—ideal for quick overtakes or when speed is essential. Through the app, a custom riding mode can also be configured, tailoring throttle response and speed to individual preferences.

Many manufacturers now integrate apps into their vehicles—often without real benefit. With the NIU NQiX 500, it’s different. The app isn't just an optional gadget; it's a central control element that unlocks the scooter's full functionality. Particularly practical is the keyless start function via Bluetooth. As soon as the smartphone is nearby, the scooter recognizes the signal and can be activated without a key. This saves the hassle of searching for the key—you always have your smartphone with you anyway.

Moreover, the app offers a variety of features that are genuinely useful in everyday life. You can set custom sound effects—like gaming or techno sounds—or even upload your own. The automatic start when the kickstand is lifted can also be activated, as well as OTA updates, charge status display, and full vehicle tracking via GPS. All in all, NIU provides one of the best app experiences in the e-scooter segment. Without the app, much of the NQiX 500's potential remains untapped.
