KTM 990 Duke R: 2025 Looks, Design, and Ergonomics

Visually, the KTM 990 Duke R 2025 echoes its predecessors, particularly the immediate predecessor, the KTM 890 Duke R, and even more so, the color scheme and orange accents of the second-generation 990 SUPER Duke R models (2011-2013). The distinctive design is completed by a glossy, powder-coated "Electronic Orange" frame, white trim lines, and matte black details. Almost as prominent as on its big sister, the KTM 1390 Super Duke R, the large black-and-orange "R" proudly adorns the tank. The pillion seat cover comes as standard, but those who want a passenger seat (and the necessary footpegs) on the 990 Duke R, which is also approved for two-up riding, will have to check out the PowerParts. The orange wheels are also borrowed from the 1390 model, completing the bike's design.

The seat height and ground clearance of the R variant have each increased by 15 mm to 840 mm and 210 mm respectively, and according to KTM, this enhances the lean angle clearance of the 990 Duke R by 3 degrees compared to its standard sibling.

KTM 990 Duke R 2025: Engine Performance and Weight

KTM has managed to squeeze an extra 7 horsepower out of the well-known 947 cc parallel-twin engine. The peak output of 94 kW (130 hp) kicks in at 9500 rpm, with the limiter stepping in 1000 revs later. The maximum torque of 103 Nm at 6750 rpm remains unchanged from the 990 Duke. This power boost is the result of optimized mapping, which fully unleashes the potential of the EURO 5+ compliant LC8c engine, aiming for improved power delivery. Compared to its standard sibling, the total weight has been reduced by 2 kg, bringing the 990 Duke R to 190 kg. With this setup, the 130 hp should ensure effortless performance.

Electronics and Display Technology of the KTM 990 Duke R 2025

The KTM 990 Duke R 2025 stands out from the standard model with significant differences in both software and hardware regarding its electronics package. The new TFT touchscreen display measures nearly 9 inches diagonally and offers a “split-screen” view. This allows you to display the advanced map navigation system on one side and current speed and RPM on the other. During prototype testing (more on that below), the unusually wide screen impressed with impeccable readability and intuitive operation, even with gloves on.

The new ABS modes "SPORT" and "SUPERMOTO+" complement Street and Supermoto, aiming to allow riders to extract maximum performance from the bike on both road and track. There are also updates to the ride modes: in addition to Rain, Street, and Sport, the R model includes a fully configurable Custom mode. As usual, the optional Track Pack is available, which includes the Track mode with lean angle display and two additional Custom modes.

Chassis and Brakes of the KTM 990 Duke R 2025

The most significant change on the KTM 990 Duke R is found in the suspension, specifically the shock absorber of the fully adjustable WP APEX setup. Like in the Super Duke, it is now mounted via a linkage for the first time, promising sportier and more precise handling, even at high speeds. The Open-Cartridge USD fork, which is 34% stiffer, has a diameter of 48 mm and offers 143 mm of travel. The shock absorber provides separate high- and low-speed compression adjustments and offers 140 mm of travel. This is 10 mm less than the 990 Duke, a necessary step due to the components needed for the linkage.

One of, if not the main criticism of the 990 Duke, was its braking performance, which just couldn't fully keep up with the sporty package. As hoped and expected, KTM doesn't hold back with the R model. The necessary stopping power is provided by a Brembo braking system, featuring Brembo Stylema calipers and a Brembo MCS master cylinder. Additionally, larger brake discs (320 mm instead of 300 mm) at the front aim to deliver precise braking feel and good modulation—features befitting an R model.

Tires and Wheels on the KTM 990 Duke R 2025

The KTM 990 Duke R 2025 comes standard with Michelin Power Cup 2 tires, which have already put a smile on riders' faces, at least in dry conditions, on its predecessor. Paired with the lightweight, striking orange rims (180 mm wide in the rear instead of 200 mm) borrowed from the KTM 1390 SUPER Duke R, they promise excellent traction.

KTM 990 Duke R 2025 Production-Ready Prototype Tested

In September, KTM invited a select group of journalists to a special event at their main factory in Mattighofen. On the first day, guests received an extensive tour of all production facilities, including the research and development department. The second day offered a ride with various prototypes, including a nearly production-ready prototype of the KTM 990 Duke R in matte black. I had the special privilege of riding it for about 20 minutes on the stunning Rossfeld Panoramic Road.

During the brief test ride with the R variant, I noticed that KTM has fine-tuned the crucial areas where the 990 Duke wasn't quite up to par. First and foremost, the brakes. The Stylema setup suits the agile 990 Duke R perfectly, making the sporty thrust a joy. The suspension setup stands out with transparency unrivaled in the naked bike sector. The seat also provides direct feedback on what's happening beneath the rider, though comfort seekers may find it challenging. The quickshifter and the overall precision of the gearbox are noteworthy. The wide display quickly becomes familiar—it's exactly as wide as the triple clamp and blends seamlessly into the Duke's cockpit for all aesthetes. Further insights require an intensive test in 2025. For those who can live with the bike's price and looks, the 990 Duke R will be a strong contender in the middleweight class.

Price and Availability of the KTM 990 Duke R 2025

The model will be available at authorized KTM dealers starting early 2025. The price of the KTM 990 Duke R, which, as is customary with KTM, has been given a nickname, "The Punisher," is not yet known.
