Triumph Rocket 3 Storm R & GT 2024 Test

How does the update of the three-cylinder rocket drive?

The muscle bike from Triumph is being re-sharpened and will be available in two different versions. Is it the wolf in sheep's clothing or vice versa? With a displacement of almost 2.5 liters and 182 hp, there is little doubt that Triumph wants to be back at the top with the Rocket 3 Storm.

Concept and history

Like its predecessors, the new Rocket 3 is a roadster featuring a 2,458 cc 3-cylinder in-line engine. The crankshaft is longitudinally positioned, avoiding the gyroscopic forces that typically counteract steering in engines mounted transversely, thus allowing for remarkably agile handling despite its 320 kg weight. However, every silver lining has a cloud; in this case, it's a minor drawback. When accelerating from a standstill, particularly during rapid throttle bursts, a lateral rolling motion is noticeable. This occurs as the engine counters the crankshaft's inertia, generating a torque that acts laterally. The reason Triumph chose this engine configuration is straightforward. Over two decades ago, Triumph aimed to significantly increase its presence in the American market. Initial research revealed that Americans predominantly desired motorcycles with large displacements. Thus, Triumph decided not to just participate but to dominate by choosing a robust, yet traditionally three-cylinder, engine. However, to accommodate such a large displacement without excessively widening the engine, it was rotated 90 degrees and installed longitudinally, a design that has been maintained to this day.

Triumph Rocket 3 Storm Motor

As previously noted, the engine, which boasts the largest serial displacement, delivers a robust 225 NM of torque at merely 4,000 rpm and a power output of 182 hp at 7,000 rpm. This represents an impressive increase of 15 hp and 4 NM over its already formidable predecessor. However, significant emphasis was placed on the electronics to not only enhance power through refined tuning but also to ensure compliance with Euro5+ standards.

Another hallmark of the engine is its not only possessing the largest displacement in its class but also spreading it across merely three cylinders. This configuration results in an impressive individual cylinder displacement of 820 cc, which in turn ensures formidable acceleration from a standstill. Coupled with electronically controlled fuel injection and Ride by Wire technology, this powerhouse remains remarkably manageable.

State-of-the-art electronics

From the lean angle-sensitive ABS and traction control to multiple engine maps and intuitive cruise control, Triumph has made significant strides in electronics, aiding riders in managing the potent engine effectively.

While the Ride by Wire system enhances maneuverability, safety, and control, thus boosting propulsion, the advanced cornering ABS ensures that momentum is maintained safely. The Torque Assist clutch aids the rider with swift and accurate gear changes in the six-speed gearbox, and a shift assistant is available as an accessory for both models. The new Hill Hold feature prevents the motorcycle from rolling backwards by automatically engaging the rear brake until the rider begins to move forward. Both Rocket models come equipped with four riding modes—Road, Rain, Sport, and a customizable rider mode, each adjusting the throttle response and traction control settings accordingly.

Triumph Rocket 3 Storm TFT display

The elegant TFT display offers a wealth of information.

Electronic cruise control is a standard feature. Speed adjustments can be made in 1 km/h increments with a simple button press and can be resumed post-braking with a single touch. Both models are equipped with a highly functional TFT color display and a backlit five-way joystick on the left handlebar control. The minimalist, elegant, and tilt-adjustable display features two information layout themes, ensuring optimal visibility for riders of all sizes. Riders also have the option to personalize the start screen with their name.

For enhanced security, both motorcycles come standard with keyless ignition and a handlebar lock, which can be disabled if necessary. The key's transmitter can be turned off to conserve battery life and enhance security. Additionally, there is a USB charging port located in a dedicated compartment beneath the seat, ensuring devices remain secure and dry during charging.

Thanks to the adoption of LED technology, lighting and power consumption are both cutting-edge.

The "eyes" of the Rocket are classic in design, but modern in technology.

Suspension and brakes of the Rocket 3 Storm family

The frame features exclusively Showa components. At the front, a robust 47 mm USD fork is utilized, while the rear is equipped with a central shock absorber from the same manufacturer. Both suspension elements are fully adjustable, allowing customization to various riding conditions.

Brembo steps in for the braking system. The twin Stylema calipers clamp onto dual 320mm discs at the front, providing excellent stopping power. Additionally, a Brembo M4 monobloc caliper paired with a substantial 300mm disc is employed at the rear wheel.

Triumph Rocket 3 Storm 2024 - Variants

The Triumph Rocket 3 Storm will be offered in two distinct models, the Rocket 3 Storm R and the Rocket 3 Storm GT, with primary variations focusing on the rider's seating configuration. The Rocket 3 Storm R features a roadster-style riding position and handlebar setup, engineered to deliver peak performance and control while ensuring a relaxed and engaging ride. In contrast, the Rocket 3 Storm GT opts for a slightly more reclined position, with the handlebars set 125 mm further back than the R, offering a noticeably more upright posture. Each version boasts a unique seat crafted from high-quality, black-painted cast aluminum base shells. The Rocket 3 Storm R is equipped with a Roadster-style rider and pillion seat, standing at a seat height of 773 mm, designed for comfort and confidence during low-speed maneuvers and optimal handling. The GT model introduces a specially contoured touring rider's seat and a well-cushioned pillion seat, complemented by an adjustable pillion backrest. The seating height of the GT is reduced to 750 mm, enhancing overall rider comfort.

The most notable distinction between the two models lies in the positioning of the footrests. On the Rocket R, the footrests are centrally located, featuring two mounting options that provide a 15 mm vertical adjustment to accommodate riders of all sizes, fostering a natural and moderately sporty riding posture. In contrast, the Rocket GT sports a footrest system positioned further forward, enhancing the relaxed vibe of a custom bike. This system can be adjusted across three different horizontal positions, spanning a total of 50 mm, ensuring optimal comfort even on extended journeys. Both the R and GT variants are equipped with innovative, blackened, retractable pillion footrests.

Riding behavior of the muscle bikes

Of course, a 320 kg bike cannot be compared to the agility of a lighter motorcycle, but thanks to its engine configuration, it also stands apart from other heavy metal bikes. The longitudinal crankshaft allows for remarkable cornering capabilities for such a heavy and lengthy bike. The forward-leaning seating position on the Triumph Cruiser results in a more aggressive upper body stance, enhancing feedback during spirited riding. However, cornering neutrality is somewhat compromised for aesthetics and the extremely wide 240 tires installed. The front tire, at 150, is wider than many other bikes' rear tires. Despite this, the Triumph Rocket 3 maintains sporty handling down to low lean angles, aided by generous lean angle clearance. Additionally, the low seat height enables shorter riders to easily manage the bike in tight maneuvers. The suspension is sportily configured to enhance feedback, though riding over sharp edges or manhole covers can transmit significant impacts. Here, comfort-seeking riders might benefit from some adjustments to the setup.

The Rocket 3 model series also proves to be surprisingly willing to corner as the Storm.

However, it's the engine that truly stands out. With minimal vibrations, it propels the bike forward from a standstill with forceful urgency, without hesitation. Owing to its substantial displacement, you typically cruise at no more than 2,000 rpm until you open the throttle, at which point the rear tire cries out for mercy. The transmission operates smoothly, and gear shifts are seamless. The ride-by-wire system and various riding modes allow for adjustable throttle response. The only slight issue might be the throttle response during load changes. Especially in lower gears, transitioning from coasting to accelerating can be a bit jerky. Nonetheless, the engine is exemplary, demonstrating that a longitudinally mounted 3-cylinder can possess many of the benefits typically associated with Triumph's transversely mounted Triples. The only noticeable effect is the torque reaction when accelerating from a standstill, which quickly becomes negligible as speed increases.

Thanks to the efficient braking system, the 320 kg Triumph Cruiser can be halted effortlessly and leaves no room for criticism.
