Schuberth S3 sport-touring helmet tested

Developed over a period of three years, the S3 aims to combine sport, safety and comfort in a sport-touring helmet. The S3 meets the ECE 22.06 standard, offering the most current safety requirements. Its construction of a fiberglass shell with additional carbon fiber reinforcement ensures improved impact absorption at a weight of 1,600 to 1,700 grams depending on equipment and shell size. The Schuberth Rescue System allows the cheek pads to be easily removed in the event of an accident, increasing both safety and comfort.

The Schuberth Individual program allows for individual adjustment to different head shapes via interchangeable head padding. It's recommended to test the helmet over a longer period before making adjustments. Even within the 1000PS team, there were cases where the helmet fit right out of the box, and others where changes had to be made to achieve a perfect fit. The S3 is also factory-prepared for the Schuberth SC2 communication system, allowing for easy integration and installation. For fitting, it's enough to remove two small covers on the side and rear of the helmet in order to click in the remote control and the main communication unit.

Whether in Austria, Spain or elsewhere in Europe: the Schuberth S3 has accompanied the 1000PS crew on numerous motorcycle road tests since 2023. The bike itself rarely mattered—the S3 suits sporty naked bikes just as well as comfortable sport tourers. As long as the fit is ensured either straight from the factory or with the help of accessories, the Schuberth helmet offers a very comfortable riding experience. The cheek pads, made from antibacterial and breathable fabrics, feel comfortable and can of course be removed and washed. Thanks to the double chin vents and the lockable forehead vent, there's plenty of fresh air, while the spoiler's air extraction lets heat escape. Although perception of noise is very subjective, the crew rated the Schuberth S3 as a fairly quiet helmet, as long as the removable chin bar remains fitted.

With the chin bar in place, the S3 feels completely sealed off, which benefits sound insulation but restricts airflow. Anyone particularly sensitive to helmet weight might not be happy with the Schuberth S3. At 1,600 to 1,700 grams, this helmet isn't exactly one of the lightest on the market.

True to form for a helmet from the German manufacturer, the S3 also comes with a solid set of features. We've already mentioned the preparation for the in-house Schuberth SC2 communication system. The sport-touring helmet is also equipped with a standard sun visor, so you can do without a tinted visor. The padded ratchet closure is also practical for everyday use, making it easier to put on and take off the helmet. While the system doesn't offer the same level of security as a double-D closure, it makes up for it with added comfort.
