Yamaha unveiled the new MT-09 in October 2023, showcasing key data and photos of the bike. The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 model generation features a more appealing light mask compared to its predecessor, with the horn now discreetly placed in the radiator cowling. The 5-inch TFT color display and new handlebar switches make operation easier, allowing riders to navigate menus effortlessly even while on the move. The heart of the MT-09, the torque-focused inline three-cylinder engine (CP3), remains unchanged, delivering 119 horsepower and 93 newton meters of torque. Meeting the new Euro 5 Plus emissions standard, the engine has undergone fine tuning for improved response and precision, particularly in the intake tract and ride-by-wire throttle grip tuning. Overall, the engine maintains its fiery performance while offering a more linear and predictable throttle response, even in the sharpest mode. Yamaha has successfully enhanced the MT-09 engine for a smoother and more controlled riding experience. Thank you, Yamaha, for this important update!

That's why the new MT-09 is so much better!
Yamaha has made improvements - and done almost everything right.
The fourth generation of the Yamaha MT-09 comes onto the market just in time for its tenth anniversary. At first glance, the changes to the third model generation do not appear to be so numerous; one would rather speak of a facelift. In fact, however, the latest MT-09 generation is a great success that can do almost everything better. In addition to the look and equipment, the character of the Japanese naked bike has also changed.

The new MT-09 provides significantly more confidence and feedback. Everything done right.
Biggest change: The ergonomics of the new Yamaha MT-09
The Yamaha Naked Bike, known as the MT-09, was designed to excel on country roads. Featuring the powerful CP3 engine, an upright riding position, high handlebars close to the rider, and agile suspension, this bike offers a unique blend of Nakedbike and Supermotard styles. In the latest MT-09 generation, Yamaha has made significant changes to the seating position, shifting towards a more naked bike/roadster feel. The handlebars have been lowered by 34.4 millimeters and brought 1.5 mm closer to the rider, while the footrests are now 9.5 millimeters higher and 30.6 millimeters further back. These adjustments create a sportier ergonomic triangle, enhancing front wheel orientation. The seat height remains at 825 millimeters, but is now two-piece and 12 millimeters narrower at the crotch, allowing riders with shorter legs to reach the ground more easily. Overall, these changes provide a more dynamic and responsive feel for riders on the new Yamaha MT-09, enhancing the bike's versatility and character on the road.
Change of heart in the MT-09 saddle: more confidence
With the Yamaha Naked Bike, you now have increased front wheel pressure in all situations, allowing you to feel the front end more clearly in both slow and fast corners. However, this does not mean that the MT-09 has become less responsive or less eager to lift the rear wheel. Yamaha has struck the perfect balance between agility and stability for long-distance rides. Thanks to the lightweight spin-forged aluminum rims, the slightly steeper trail, and the new damper setup, the bike is now noticeably more stable while remaining agile through corners. Even high-speed corners can be navigated with more ease. The fully adjustable 41-millimeter Kayaba USD fork now features firmer springs and dampers, providing increased front-end feedback and a sportier feel overall. Despite the added weight on the front wheel, the front suspension remains responsive and sporty without compromising comfort, even on rough roads, with 130 millimeters of front suspension travel and 117 millimeters at the rear. The days of front-end instability are a thing of the past. The rear central shock absorber has also been retuned, offering adjustable preload and rebound settings that provide a smooth and sensitive ride without being too harsh. Only under extreme conditions might the shock absorber require more compression.

The new Bridgestone S23 tire with M-marking, specially developed for the MT-09.
Special Bridgestone tires for MT-09
To maintain the playful handling and improve stability in corners, Yamaha has equipped their Naked Bike with specially designed sports tires from Bridgestone: the S23 M. The standard Bridgestone S23, a new generation sports tire, has been tailored for the MT-09 with the "M" designation. This means riders can expect enhanced feedback, increased grip, a confident lean-in feel, and agile handling. The updated ergonomics, firmer suspension, tweaked geometry, and Bridgestone S23 M tires will surely delight sporty riders. With over 200,000 MT-09 models sold globally, Yamaha listened closely to customer feedback during the development process, resulting in the best MT-09 in history.

New 5" TFT display, app connectivity and new switch unit on the left.
More equipment, easy operation with the MT-09 2024
The third generation's display and controls were outdated, but the fourth generation of the Yamaha Naked Bike features a sleek, large 5-inch TFT display and a brand-new handlebar control unit on the left side, greatly enhancing usability. The highlight is the intuitive 5-way joystick that can be operated effortlessly. A convenient "home button" allows for quick navigation, and Yamaha has added a user-friendly cruise control feature. Additionally, a new turn signal switch on the left now offers a soft function - a light press activates the blinker three times before automatically turning off, while a firmer press results in a longer flash. Some journalists found the operation a bit finicky while riding, so there is room for improvement in this area. The clutch lever is now adjustable and matches the visual design of the new 16-millimeter Brembo radial brake pump. The menu navigation has been revamped for easier understanding without the need for extensive manual study. For added convenience, riders can utilize the Yamaha MyRide app to seamlessly connect their smartphone to the motorcycle, make adjustments, and even display Garmin navigation with a detailed map. Exciting updates for a powerful riding experience!

The riding modes are fully customizable, and operation is easy thanks to the 5-way joystick.
Full electronics and assistance package in the MT-09
When it comes to electronic features, the new Yamaha MT-09 Naked Bike offers a comprehensive package without any extra cost. This includes a 6-axis IMU for lean angle-dependent analysis, traction control, ABS, skid control, wheelie control, and engine drag control to prevent rear wheel lock-up. Additionally, a third-generation quickshifter with blipper allows for seamless gear shifts in any riding situation. The bike also features cruise control and three pre-defined riding modes (Sport, Street, Rain), along with two customizable modes. The mode switch on the handlebar makes it easy to switch between modes, although customization can be done in the submenu. While it's possible to deactivate all systems for a more raw riding experience, it's worth noting that all aids need to be reactivated upon restarting the bike. Selective deactivation of specific assistance systems is not possible, as it's an all-or-nothing scenario. The ABS, however, remains on at all times and performs exceptionally well without any criticism.

The new light mask: slim, attractive, functional and suitable for the masses.
More sound and still quieter
The fuel tank of the new Yamaha Naked Bike is now lower (by 30 millimeters) and wider (by 60 millimeters), reflecting the updated ergonomics. Despite these changes, the tank still holds 14 liters of fuel, with the total weight coming in at just 193 kilograms when fully fueled and ready to ride. The CP3 engine is now registered at 94 decibels on the vehicle license, meeting the requirements for use in Tyrol. However, it appears to be louder than its predecessor, attributed to the redesigned intake tract that directs the aggressive intake noise more directly towards the rider through two bars and two grilles on top of the tank. The exhaust system remains largely unchanged, directing the exhaust downwards rather than rearwards. Yamaha's sound engineers claim that this design choice focuses the sound around the rider, reducing noise emissions into the environment. A clever solution indeed.

Upgrade for the brakes: 16 mm radial brake pump from Brembo. Bites!
Does it have to be the Yamaha MT-09 SP?
There will be a SP version available once again. This version includes an additional riding mode specifically for track riders (Track), a fully adjustable Öhlins rear suspension, Brembo Stylema front brake calipers, a different Kayaba fork, and a more elaborate paint job. Many readers of 1000PS were curious: Is the SP version necessary? The answer: No, because the new base model is so impressive that the SP and standard versions have become very similar, ultimately benefiting the regular MT-09. While an Öhlins shock absorber with reservoir will offer enhanced performance on the track, the Stylema calipers are top-notch both visually and technically, and the more responsive fork is also a great addition. However, if you mainly ride on country roads, the new MT-09 provides such a strong foundation that you'd have to push it to the limit to truly benefit from the SP version. One compelling reason to opt for the SP is its higher resale value. If you have the extra 2,500 euros to spare, then it's worth considering. Nevertheless, it's no longer a must-have in the fourth generation of the MT-09.

These options include a bikini cover for minimal display coverage and easier cleaning, as well as a larger windshield designed to reduce wind pressure on the upper body. Additionally, riders can customize their bike with accessories such as handguards and a sleeker license plate holder.

Yamaha MT-09 2024 - Experiences and Expert Review
Philipp
Yes, Yamaha has produced a really leiwandes motorcycle. All the criticisms of its predecessor have been successfully revised without neutering the wild and playful nature of the MT-09. The fourth generation is more mature, more precise and more polished, rides more neutrally and more stable without losing its light-footedness. A wonderful motorcycle, which currently offers an almost unbeatable price-performance ratio thanks to many detail improvements and has now even become really pretty. The Yamaha dealers won't be able to save themselves from orders after test rides. Let's hope that availability is guaranteed, because the new MT-09 is the definition of the word "direct hit"!
