The BMW Naked Bike, known as the nineT series, pays tribute to the original boxer motorcycles of the early 20th century by offering modern naked bikes equipped with twin-cylinder boxer engines that still use oil-air cooling. Introduced by BMW in 2013, this model has exceeded expectations with over 110,000 units sold in the past decade. In 2024, BMW will be giving the nineT series a significant update, ensuring that while the wheel may not be reinvented, the bike itself will continue to evolve. So, what can riders expect from this latest iteration?

BMW R 12 nineT 2024 innovations & update
The tradition of adding a number to the R, representing the boxer engine, is a long-standing practice at BMW. Following the R 18, the nineT is now evolving into the R 12 nineT. Despite this change, the core elements remain the same, including the engine. The well-known air-oil-cooled 1170 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine continues to be the centerpiece of the nineT. Remarkably, this engine has been a staple in various BMW models for two decades, and its compliance with the latest EU5+ standard is a notable achievement. This ensures that the beloved engine remains road-legal. The power output of 109 hp is now delivered at 7,000 rpm, slightly earlier than before, although one Nm was sacrificed to meet the stringent standards. The torque now stands at 115 Nm at 6,500 rpm. BMW engineers take pride in successfully adapting the engine to meet the new emission regulations.
The latest update includes a significant change to the frame of the BMW Naked Bike. The bridge lattice tube frame is now a single piece, eliminating bolted connections and reducing weight. However, customizers can still easily modify the external rear frame, which remains bolted on. The airbox has been repositioned under the seat, along with redesigned fairings and updated design features. The overall appearance of the BMW Naked Bike has been refined for a more striking look. For instance, the optional pillion seat cover now aligns seamlessly with the underside of the rear frame. The tank, saddle, and rear end now flow together harmoniously, enhancing the visual appeal. The weight of the bike has been reduced by one kilogram to 220 kg when fully equipped. Further enhancements in ergonomics, chassis, and brakes enhance the riding experience.
BMW R 12 nineT riding impressions on the country road
The distinctive rumble of the boxer engine when starting up the BMW R nineT has remained unchanged over the years, adding to its charm. We took to the twisty roads of Andalusia on ContiRoad tires near Malaga. The engine characteristics have stayed true to their roots, with the R nineT still offering smooth gear shifts, ample torque, and flexible gears for easy low-speed riding. Acceleration is clean and responsive from around 1,800 rpm, accompanied by the iconic boxer engine sound emanating from the new twin silencer. A notable advancement is the introduction of a modern quickshifter for the classic boxer engine. Unlike its predecessor, the HP 2, which only allowed for upshifting, the new quickshifter enables seamless up and down shifts with precise gear changes. As is typical for BMW, a bit more force is required on the gearshift lever. The quickshifter performs admirably, except in situations where shifting with a slightly open throttle can cause a jolt forward. This area could use some refinement. Manual gear changes with the clutch result in a pronounced "clonk" sound, and the hand lever demands more effort than expected, particularly in stop-and-go traffic.
Another notable feature that enhances the riding experience is the new ergonomics of the BMW Naked Bike. The redesigned tank, now shorter with a 16-liter capacity (2 liters less than before), is slimmer towards the rider, bringing you closer to the handlebars. This positioning elevates the upper body and reduces strain on the wrists. The slightly sharper knee angle maintains comfort within the standard range. The revamped riding position complements the R 12 nineT's low center of gravity seamlessly. The broad handlebars facilitate easy maneuvering, allowing for effortless transitions from side to side, especially enjoyable when navigating tight corners. The upgraded chassis further enhances performance. The front USD fork has been enlarged to 45 mm and is now fully adjustable for the first time. The rear shock absorber, directly linked, features progressive damping and adjustable preload and rebound. With 120 mm of suspension travel both front and rear, coupled with a firm setup, riders receive ample feedback from the wheels while on the R 12 nineT. Even under hard braking in curves, the chassis remains stable with minimal flex, despite the revised and more responsive brakes. The front now boasts two floating 310 mm brake discs with a radially mounted 4-piston monobloc caliper, replacing the previous 320 mm discs and fixed calipers. The rear brake system now includes a 2-piston floating caliper gripping a 265 mm brake disc instead of a fixed caliper. Surprisingly robust for a retro naked bike, the braking performance of the R 12 nineT requires minimal effort on the lever for precise and firm braking. The pressure point is well-balanced, allowing for sensitive brake control, aided by the semi-integral brake system that simultaneously engages the rear brake when the front brake is applied. This setup complements the powerful engine, superior chassis, and updated ergonomics of the R 12 nineT. For a more aggressive riding style, simply shift your weight forward and engage attack mode to fully utilize the bike's agility and premium components, ensuring excellent performance even during high-speed cornering.
Standard equipment & accessories for the BMW R 12 nineT 2024
Customization and accessories have always been a key focus for the stylish BMW Naked Bike, and this year is no different. The standard features include LED headlights with daytime running lights, the classic dual instruments displaying speedometer, rev counter, and on-board computer, automatic stability control (ASC), Rain & Road riding modes, a blacked-out drivetrain with cardan shaft, and the manually adjustable upside-down fork. But that's not all. BMW has introduced some exciting new additions to the accessories lineup, such as the elegant Option 719 milled parts, spoked rims, aluminum components, special colors and designs with a sophisticated brushed aluminum finish. For instance, instead of the traditional analog round displays, riders can opt for a 3.5-inch micro TFT screen on the BMW Naked Bike. This discreet display offers smartphone connectivity and can be switched to a Pure Ride mode, showing only speed and gear engaged for a minimalist look. Additionally, there is the Comfort package, including a shift assistant, heated grips, cruise control, and hill start assist, as well as the Headlight Pro with adaptive cornering lights, Driving Modes Pro, tire pressure monitoring, anti-theft alarm system, the solo rear seat, and a wide range of accessories to add some extra flair to the bike.
Price & conclusion on the BMW R 12 nineT 2024
The BMW Naked Bike, the R 12 nineT, shares a similar strong character and traditional appeal with the Moto Guzzi V7. However, while the Guzzi is more suited for leisurely cruising, the R 12 nineT can also be awakened from its daydreams and pushed dynamically around corners. The new ergonomics, top-notch chassis, powerful brakes, and new quickshifter make the R 12 nineT perform better than ever before in 2024. The price increase from the previous R nineT is minimal, with the R nineT priced at €20,330 in Austria and the R 12 nineT starting at €20,690. Additional accessories and customization options can push the price higher, but this hasn't deterred the numerous buyers of the nineT. In 2024, there are plenty of compelling reasons to choose the R 12 nineT as your naked bike of choice.
