BMW R20 Concept 2025: Boxer naked bike with 2 liter displacement
The Big Boxer enters the next round
BMW Motorrad presents the latest big boxer bike at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como: the BMW R20 Concept. It takes the familiar R 18 engine and packs it with more displacement into a beautiful retro bike.
It's a familiar sight: BMW's big boxer engine by Lake Como. This is also where the Bavarians unveiled the Concept Bike for the R 18. Now, five years later, the manufacturer is moving to the next stage. As previously known, BMW is not satisfied with the sales figures of the Big Boxer which is why the family is now being expanded towards naked bikes.
Boxer engine with 2 liter displacement
The BMW R20 Concept impresses with its powerful appearance in a casual gentleman's style. At the heart of the motorcycle is the legendary air-oil-cooled Big Boxer engine, which serves as the central sculptural element. The engine of the BMW R20 Concept, familiar from the R 18, now has a displacement of 2,000 cc. New cylinder head covers, belt covers, and an oil cooler were developed to ensure optimum integration. The open intake funnels and the megaphone design tailpipes are intended to provide the typical big boxer sound. At this early stage of the motorcycle, the manufacturer has not yet announced any performance data. However, as the motorcycle is very likely to go into production, these figures should not be long in coming.
The exposed propshaft taken from the R18 concept was shortened for integration into the Roadster architecture
BMW R20 Concept presents itself as a relaxed naked bike cruiser
The chassis and suspension of the BMW R20 Concept have been completely redeveloped. The black double-loop main frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes forms the backbone of the motorcycle. At the rear, a 17x6.25-inch disc wheel with a 200/55 tire provides stability, while a 17-inch spoke wheel with 120/70 tires is mounted at the front. The tried-and-tested BMW Paralever has been integrated in a new two-arm version, the swingarm is made of chrome-molybdenum steel and the Paralever strut is made of aluminum.
Braking is provided by radially mounted brake calipers from ISR on the front and rear axles with six and four pistons per brake caliper respectively. The fully adjustable Öhlins Blackline components at the front and rear ensure precise suspension tuning. The basic vehicle geometry features a steering head angle of 62.5° and a wheelbase of 1,550 mm.
Custom design in the style of the 1970s
The Big Boxer family has always been associated with a certain retro charm. The new R20 Concept is no different. One highlight is the "hotter than pink" painted aluminum tank, inspired by the 1970s. The cylinder head covers, belt cover, and air intake funnel are made of polished and anodized aluminum. The compact rear end with integrated tail light and the modern LED headlight with daytime running light round off the design.
BMW R20 in series production from 2025?
If you take its engine sister R 18 as a benchmark, the new R 20 should already be on sale in 2025. Because even with the Big Boxer Cruiser, the company only took just under a year after the announcement on Lake Como. Perhaps we will see the finished motorcycle during the trade fair season in the fall and winter. However, it is already clear that it will have to compete with established bikes such as the Triumph Rocket 3. As soon as new information leaks out, we'll let you know!
