BMW CE 02 (11 kW) Test 2024 - Range, experiences
Electric comfort gliding
With the CE 02, BMW presents the first eParkourer: Neither e-scooter nor e-motorcycle. We found out what's behind the name - and more importantly - how the CE 02 rides in Lisbon.
Just two years after the e-scooter CE 04, BMW Motorrad's quiet revolution continues with the introduction of the new BMW Naked Bike. Positioned below the impressive CE 04 maxi scooter, the new CE 02 is accessible to both AM and A1 license holders (or B-111 in Austria, B-196 in Germany). We took it for a test ride.
Not an e-scooter, not an e-motorcycle. What is the CE 02?
Introducing the BMW Naked Bike! This unique motorcycle, known as the CE 02, combines elements of both naked bikes and scooters, resulting in a visually striking vehicle. With a seat height of 750 mm, riders will feel at home on this bike, especially with the naked bike handlebars in front of them. However, distinctive scooter features start to stand out, such as the rear brake being operated by the left hand instead of a foot pedal. Despite this, riders can still achieve a sporty riding position by using the pillion footrests. The spacious long seat provides ample room for maneuvering, catering even to taller individuals. While not a traditional naked bike or a scooter due to the lack of wind protection and storage space, the CE 02 truly stands out as a unique eParkourer.
Two variants, each with two equipment lines available
Before we delve into the test impressions, let's first clarify the available versions of the BMW Naked Bike. The CE 02 comes in two variants. The 4 kW version is approved for AM and can be ridden with a moped license or a B driving license without an additional endorsement. It has a top speed of 45 km/h and a range of approximately 45 kilometers, thanks to its 1.96 kWh battery. Our test focused on the more robust 11 kW variant, which falls into the A1 class and can also be ridden with the B-111 (AT) or B-196 (DE) driving license add-on. With a rated power of 6 kW and a maximum power of 11 kW, this CE 02 can reach a top speed of 95 km/h and cover around 90 kilometers on a single charge according to the WMTC test - boasting two batteries and a total capacity of 3.92 kWh.
Moreover, each CE 02 is offered in two equipment variants: Standard and HIGHLINE. We tested the HIGHLINE variant, which comes at an additional cost of 880 euros and includes the following features:
Response: Furthermore, each BMW Naked Bike is offered in two equipment variants: Standard and HIGHLINE. We tested the HIGHLINE variant, which comes at an additional cost of 880 euros and includes the following features:

BMW CE 02 driving modes in practice
The BMW Naked Bike was specifically designed for urban commuting and should be viewed as such. However, the driving modes are well-suited for everyday use. The FLOW and SURF modes come as standard: FLOW provides moderate recuperation and is ideal for smooth city traffic. SURF disables recuperation for a seamless glide. As we start our journey in the heart of Lisbon, we opt for FLOW mode. The recuperation may not be as strong initially, as full recuperation is only enabled when the battery level is low. Once the battery reaches 50 percent charge, the electric motor provides more intense braking for noticeable deceleration. This effect is further enhanced in the optional FLASH mode, which offers maximum recuperation.
This model also comes highly recommended. The throttle response is immediate but not overly sensitive, and the regenerative braking is notably powerful. However, this effect could be more pronounced so that you no longer require the use of the brake levers to come to a stop in urban areas. Other e-bikes excel in this aspect. We tried out the SURF mode without regenerative braking, but we did not utilize it in city traffic.
The right performance for the city
The performance of the BMW Naked Bike is always consistent - regardless of the mode you choose. Thanks to the electric motor, this BMW motorcycle delivers 55 Nm of torque, providing a boost at traffic lights. The eParkourer accelerates quickly and hits 50 km/h in just three seconds. The acceleration remains strong up to 70 km/h, only then do you start to notice the "mere" 11 kW, which takes a bit of time to reach the top speed of 95 km/h. This means that even urban highways pose no challenge for the BMW Naked Bike, the only thing it could use is cruise control.
However, in changing road conditions - of which there are many in Lisbon - the drivetrain impresses with its well-balanced performance, allowing the ASC (Automatic Stability Control) to remain inactive even under provocation.
BMW CE 02 brakes: Good, but...
... in some way BMW's statements and decisions seem to be contradictory. With the new BMW Naked Bike, the CE 02, they aim to target both young novice riders and those transitioning from cars. Essentially, individuals who may not have much experience on two wheels yet. Simultaneously, the eParkourer is designed to be an enjoyable bike that allows riders to showcase a bit of flair. As a result, it was decided - even though it is not mandatory by law - to only equip the front wheel with an ABS system. During our test ride, experienced riders had a blast sliding to a stop at traffic lights with the rear wheel locked. However, it raises the question of whether beginners would find this experience enjoyable if they were to encounter it unintentionally. Therefore, it would have been safer to include an ABS system that can be deactivated.
In addition to that, the braking performance is also commendable. The front features a 239 mm disc with a two-piston caliper, while the rear is equipped with a 220 mm disc and a single-piston caliper, which also allows for energy recuperation.
Surprising comfort in the saddle
The BMW Naked Bike impressed us during our test ride in Lisbon. The 37 mm upside-down fork and side-mounted rear shock performed exceptionally well on the city's cobblestone streets and tram tracks. Despite rough road conditions, the rider experienced high levels of comfort. The suspension system effectively absorbed bumps and maintained stability at high speeds. Surprisingly, the narrow seat also provided a comfortable ride. For those seeking additional cushioning, an optional 20 mm higher Comfort seat is available, increasing the seat height to 770 mm. Even in its standard configuration, the BMW Naked Bike offers a luxurious riding experience akin to the Rolls-Royce of A1 e-bikes.
Ergonomics of the BMW CE 02
The design of the BMW Naked Bike with its elongated seat may appear unconventional at first, but it offers practical benefits for daily use. When riding solo, you have the flexibility to utilize both the rider and passenger foot pegs. This allows for either a traditional cruiser riding stance or a more adventurous scrambler position, further enhanced by the elevated handlebars. Riding as a duo is also easily achievable on the BMW Naked Bike. The extended seat provides ample room, and with a weight capacity of 180 kilograms, you can even enjoy a hearty breakfast on the go.
BMW CE 02 Range & charging times
According to the WMTC, the range of the BMW Naked Bike with two batteries is approximately 90 kilometers. However, this would require ideal conditions and driving optimized for consumption. During our test ride, we estimated a range of around 70 to 80 kilometers. This is a respectable figure, especially considering the conditions: temperatures ranging from 10 to 18 degrees Celsius and a less than economical driving style. To accurately determine the actual range, a long-term test would be necessary, but a range of about 90 kilometers seems realistic. Sufficient range for daily urban commuting.
Charging the BMW Naked Bike can be done using a standard household socket. The standard version comes with a 0.9 kW charger, but the HIGHLINE equipment line offers a faster 1.5 kW quick charger. This allows for quicker charging times.
BMW CE 02 (11 kW) Charging times
| State of charge | Charger 0.9 kW | Charger 1.5 kW |
| 20 - 80 % | 168 min (2.8 h) | 102 min (1.7 h) |
| 0 - 100 % | 312 min (5.2 h) | 210 min (3.5 h) |
Data according to manufacturer
The two 1.96 kWh batteries are positioned beneath the seat and are even removable. However, BMW anticipates that the CE 02 will primarily be charged directly by customers, with the battery only being taken out for maintenance purposes. Nonetheless, the option to remove it is available, which is a positive feature.
Price of the new BMW CE 02
The new BMW Naked Bike CE 02 starts at €8,500 in Germany, €8,550 in Austria, and CHF 7,700 in Switzerland in the 11 kW version we tested. For the recommended HIGHLINE package, an additional €880 or CHF 1,020 is due. In the 125cc class, the price can therefore be considered high, but in today's electromobility, the price is not surprising.
Conclusion: BMW CE 02 11kW 2024
With the CE 02, BMW wants to have created a new type of vehicle: The eParkourer. In fact, the vehicle combines features of the scooter and motorcycle classes and creates something very unique. The design is polarizing, but the technology underneath works well. The handling in particular deserves praise, even if unfortunately only ABS is available on the front wheel. Anyone looking for an exciting electric companion should consider the CE 02.
