Již předchůdce dokázal jezdit sportovně i přesvědčivě na výletech, nový R 1200 R toho umí ještě více - díky systému brašen (samozřejmě za příplatek) není cestování stále žádný problém, ale sportovní jízdu zvládá ještě lépe. Díky nyní částečně vodou chlazenému dvouválcovému motoru boxer je úžasně agilní - 125 koní se na papíře nemusí zdát mnoho, ale motor neuvěřitelně tlačí a navíc se chová kultivovaně. Podvozek a brzdy jsou také velmi dobré a pozice sedadla je sportovní a vzpřímená, což pokrývá široké spektrum od báječné zábavy až po dálkové cestování. Bohužel BMW dokonale rozumí i triku s příplatkovým seznamem. Základní model je dobře vybaven ABS, které lze deaktivovat, kontrolou trakce, kterou lze rovněž deaktivovat, a dvěma jízdními režimy, ale mnoho zajímavých vychytávek je téměř povinných - a samozřejmě zvyšují cenu.
