Změnil se ocelový podvozek i hnací ústrojí, motor byl zvětšen na 853 cm3 a díky 90stupňovému posunu klikového čepu je navržen tak, aby byl ještě výkonnější. Díky tomu se nový F 850 GS prezentuje suverénněji než nadšeně a je přesvědčivý jak na silnici, tak v terénu. Velmi výjimečná je možnost přizpůsobit si BMW přesně svým osobním potřebám díky rozsáhlé nabídce příslušenství - v současné době vlastně neexistuje prvek, který byste si na F 850 GS nemohli pořídit. To však také zvyšuje cenu.
