After the introduction of the latest Triumph Tiger 1200 generation in 2022, the first major update is now coming in 2024. The excellently equipped flagship models from the Triumph Adventure range leave hardly anything to be desired - but there was always criticism in the details. Triumph's development department has listened carefully over the last two years and made direct improvements. 1000PS was allowed to test ride all 4 models in Scotland. Thank you very much, we are now very satisfied!

Upon first inspection, the Triumph Enduro doesn't appear to have undergone many changes. Besides the introduction of two new color options, the Enduro bears a striking resemblance to its initial release on the market approximately two years ago. The motorcycle boasts top-notch LED lighting all around, premium materials, a sharp 7-inch display in the cockpit, sleek controls, sophisticated fittings, and high-quality additional components. The exceptional craftsmanship is evident even in the smallest details, leaving an overall impression of superior quality. However, the real progress lies within the inner workings of the bike in 2024 - and as we all know, these are the aspects that truly matter.

Triumph Tiger 1200 engine gets more flywheel mass

Let's begin with the most significant and crucial aspect. Triumph has gone beyond just tinkering with electronics when it comes to engine optimization. The engineers from Hinckley have made substantial mechanical adjustments to the power unit. The relatively small flywheel mass, combined with the electronic configuration, particularly that of the "Low-RPM-Assist" system designed to assist the rider at low engine speeds, has previously resulted in some illogical interventions. Particularly in slow and technical riding scenarios, like navigating very tight hairpin bends, the throttle response required some adaptation. In our tests, there were occasional instances of the engine cutting out when the clutch was disengaged, such as when briefly coasting downhill. This issue has now been rectified.

The Triumph Enduro features an increased flywheel mass on the crankshaft, alternator rotor, and balance shaft, accommodating an additional 900 grams in the 1,160 cc three-cylinder engine. This, combined with optimized engine tuning, results in significantly improved low-speed drivability without the artificial feel of electronics. This marks a major and crucial advancement! During our test on the winding roads of Scotland, none of the usual phenomena were present. The improvements in load change reactions are also evident. What was once noticeable on the previous model is now much smoother, operating in the manner of a true British gentleman - direct, powerful, yet with impeccable manners.

Same performance but less vibration on the Triumph Tiger 1200

The performance of the three-cylinder T-plane engine remains unchanged in the Triumph Enduro. With 150 hp and 130 Newton meters of torque, this engine delivers powerful performance, especially in the mid-range revs. Triumph has successfully reduced vibrations at the top end by making changes to the crankshaft and balancer shaft, focusing on optimal balancing. The Triumph Enduro models GT Pro and Rally Pro now come equipped with elastomer-mounted handlebar clamps, previously only found on the Explorer models. This upgrade enhances comfort for riders, marking a significant improvement in the overall riding experience.

Triumph's Enduro 1200 is equipped with a range of features that are often optional extras on competitor models. This includes the impressive quickshifter, heated grips, and hill start assist, as well as the semi-active chassis with advanced solutions. One standout feature found on all four models is the active reduction of spring preload on the rear suspension, known as "Active Preload Reduction" by Triumph. This system, introduced in late 2023 as a software update available through dealers, is now a standard feature across all models. To activate it, simply hold down the home button on the right-hand control for one second. Within seconds, the seat height can be lowered by up to 20 millimeters, but the motorcycle must be traveling under 50 km/h for this to take effect. This feature makes it easier for riders to reach the ground at stops, enhancing safety and comfort, especially for shorter individuals. During our tests, it took 12 to 16 seconds (depending on load) to fully lower the bike, so riders should consider timing when using it in city traffic. As speed increases, the preload adjusts automatically, returning the suspension to its normal position. Alternatively, riders can press the home button again to reset the preload.

Staying true to the theme of seat height, the redesigned seat of the Triumph Enduro deserves a mention. The seat is now slightly flatter for the latest model year, providing more flexibility in positioning while riding - a benefit for adjusting height during long journeys. The overall seat height remains unchanged. For the GT models, riders can still adjust their seat to a height of 850 to 870 millimeters, while on the Rally models, riders will be seated at a height of 875 to 895 millimeters.

When it comes to the suspension, the Triumph Enduro features electronically adjustable and semi-active damping Showa suspension that has already proven impressive on previous models. It offers excellent responsiveness, damping a wide range of conditions depending on the mode selected, from comfortable to sporty and firm. Whether encountering short bumps like speed bumps and manhole covers or rough asphalt, the Triumph Enduro handles them all with ease.

The stability of the Triumph Enduro is a key feature that stands out, whether it's the GT or Rally model. The vehicle's geometry ensures a confident and secure ride, allowing for smooth and precise handling. Quick changes in direction may require some effort on the handlebars, but overall, the Tiger 1200's stability-focused design is highly effective. Riders will quickly adapt to the bike and build a strong sense of confidence, whether riding at high speeds or on challenging terrain. The unpredictable weather in Scotland offered the perfect setting for a true adventure bike test.

We didn't ride off-road in Scotland, but we also know from our experience with the Triumph Enduro that the suspension works great even on rough terrain. With 220-millimeter suspension travel on the fork and shock, the hardware on the Triumph Enduro has decent reserves, which it rarely has to fully exploit. The suspension elements reliably filter out short, hard impacts from roots and rocks. Deep waves are a bit of a challenge at higher speeds, but here too, bottoming out is rare. A commendable performance, especially for the Triumph Enduro, which is such a large and heavy bike.

More lean angle clearance for Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro & GT Explorer

The adventurous spirit of the Triumph Enduro is perfectly complemented by its sporty engine and the 19-inch front wheel designed for road use. Triumph has ingeniously raised and repositioned the footrests on the two GT models, providing riders with more agility and freedom to push their limits on winding roads. The elongated metal pins underneath the footrests, known as scare nipples, have been shortened for the 2024 model, allowing sporty riders to confidently navigate sharp turns without the distraction of scraping noises. While the exact increase in lean angle clearance remains undisclosed, the noticeable improvement in performance during our test ride speaks volumes.

Revised footrest mounts allow positioning closer to the vehicle. The height has also been raised slightly. Both together ensure more lean angle freedom in the angled position.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally or GT - Pro or Explorer - which is the right one?

When it comes to the Triumph Enduro, some basic information should be noted. The Enduro model always comes with a larger tank, holding a full 30 liters of fuel capacity compared to the 20 liters in the standard model. This feature is especially appealing to frequent travelers and adventurers. The Enduro version also offers additional features, such as heated grips, a heated driver's seat, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a radar-based blind spot assistant. Crash bars are included as standard, ensuring preparedness for any situation.

Having had the chance to ride all four models side by side during our trip to Scotland, the distinctions became clear throughout the day. The Triumph Enduro GT variant is likely to attract road riders looking for a sporty edge. The 19-inch front wheel, paired with the lighter aluminum wheels, enhances the bike's agility. Maneuvering becomes noticeably easier, and the bike can be positioned with less effort when taking corners. Just like with the Rally version, the choice between the Explorer or the base model will likely depend on individual preferences. Additionally, deciding whether to opt for safety features like Blind Spot Assist is crucial. This particular feature is exclusive to this model and cannot be transferred to or added on to the Pro models through the configurator.

The 30 liter tank capacity on the Explorer models underlines the stately appearance of the Tiger 1200. With an additional crash bar ex works, it looks like an unshakeable adventure machine.

Equipped with spoked wheels, increased suspension travel, and higher ground clearance (along with a higher seat height), the Triumph Enduro models are designed for adventurous riders who are not afraid of tackling off-road terrain. Our testing has shown that the Tiger 1200 Enduro is more than capable of handling challenging off-road adventures. With an additional two centimeters of suspension travel and a large 21-inch front wheel, this bike offers the necessary confidence and capability for off-road riding. Despite their off-road focus, the Enduro models also perform admirably on paved roads. The increased rotational mass of the spoked wheels enhances the stability of the motorcycle. The extra suspension travel does not compromise performance on asphalt, and riders can easily adjust the suspension settings via the cockpit. However, for more aggressive cornering and sporty riding, riders may need to exert a bit more effort on the handlebars. It's worth noting that shorter riders should pay attention to the impressive seat height of 875 millimeters on the Enduro models. An optional lower seat (-20 millimeters) is available for those who need it, and it can even be heated if desired.

The Triumph Enduro models for 2024 come with new color options. The road-focused Triumph Enduro GT Pro and GT Explorer, as well as the off-road optimized Triumph Enduro Rally Pro and Rally Explorer, now offer fresh color choices. The GT Pro and GT Explorer can now be selected in Carnival Red, alongside the existing Snowdonia White and Sapphire Black options.
